I have to say, Mat is incredibly fun to read but would suck to play, because one of his major superpowers is "The DM will railroad him into being exactly where he needs to be." And, I mean, as a person that's simultaneously really annoying and really awesome. Because on the one hand, where you need to be may not be where you want to be, and you get stuck doing a lot of things you don't want to do. But on the other hand, you know you're always going to have everything you need--"sometimes even before you know you need it," as the man says.

But this power works by totally negating your ability to make important choices. Sometimes by tweaking the world so that your choices do what they need to do (see the wall falling on him, or the bit where he accidentally winds up in command of the Band), and sometimes by literally physically preventing you from making the "wrong" choice.

In real life this may be worth it because it means you win in the end. In a game, it totally defeats the purpose of playing at all.

Edit: that said, it's totally canonically true that Mat's luck causes people to miss him or trip and fall in exactly the right spot to impale themselves on his weapons or reveal their secret weak spots to him. Hell, he can consistently hit targets the size of his fist with his eyes closed and in fact without ever having seen them or even knowing that they're there. He basically gets +bullshit to all combat rolls when they're important. But that's again not actually interesting.

Mat is also apparently pretty boss with polearms, and a fractactical genius, but those tend to get glossed over or happen offscreen. It's not just that he's lucky; he's also skilled enough to take advantage of it.

Six items running at full blast through a well-engineered engine will put you, and something like 50 tons of cargo, into space. Alternatively, if you thrust sideways, you will briefly be a fireball screaming across the sky at mach 14 before you melt from atmospheric friction.

Well yes, but being a Fighter, and being able to order lots of little fighters around isn't even close to level appropriate, so it gets ignored in a thread about shitty character concepts, because it is shitty.

Although, being an army manager suffers from the similar to luck problem that you are a shitty character that makes everyone else in the group suffer.

In games where you allow Fighters to lead tiny men, what stops wizards from also leading tiny men with the aid of perfect communications channels and logistics negating spells.

No, in a game Mat's powers would be represented by a limited ability to alter plot and to detail the game world to his liking.

So if he suddenly decided that he needed black powder or something to win a battle or get into a castle, he'd use a charge of his I've Got That! power and a band of those fireworks guys would then roll through town and would automatically agree to help him.

His ability to be in the right place is really no different than a Find The Path spell or other divination effect. His fighting is basically replicable with True Strike and any of the spells that give a big arbitrary AC bonus.

Honestly, nothing he does is outside of the range of your average DnD character with access to around five or six spell effects. Even his big unique artifact is just a run-of-the-mill SR item.

I figure he's just got a PrC that hands out spell-likes like the hundreds of other PrCs that do the same.

In novel settings, it's because common men hate and fear spellcasters and won't follow them.

DnD never went that route because it interferes with sucking the cocks of spellcasters, but any new game could easily just say that the practice of magic literally makes you seem super creepy to normal people as a side effect of channeling strange energies.

Of course, novel settings don't give armies to single guys, but have casts of minor characters who do the actual leading of armies so that even spellcasters can be the head of state with generals under them who actually lead troops. Games don't want to deal with the idea of an army basically being a party of leaders who each control part of the forces.

Suck fewer cocks.

For staters having an army is actually a really shitty high level abilitiy since having tiny men is worthless against GTFO abilites. Also you seem to have forgoten that Clerics are a class that exist. "Magic" isn't just the purview of creepy robed dudes who live in towers in D&D land it's also somthing practiced by the fucking Pope.

Clerics can be creepy robed dudes. The Pope could be so infused with Pelor's might that the eyes of mortals burn up in their sockets when they look at him.

The current Pope is the perfect example of a creepy robed dude.

That said, I don't like the idea of taking a somewhat-system-agnostic game like D&D and declaring all spellcasters must be creepy so that people fear them as some kind of balance point.

That seems reasonable.

I am generally in favor of opening up some significant magic to all characters (or all PCs at the very least). If someone's big thing was that they had an army at high levels, I'd want to see something like a Dominions-style horde of shapeshifting jaguar warriors with flaming-blessed swords.

That could be meaningful even when the PCs are dealing with wraith swarms, castle-sized dragons, and wizard-angels.

I'm not really convinced that any design element can be truly setting-agnostic. For example, deciding that arcane spellcasters suffer from ASF and clerics can't cast opposed-alignment spells are setting elements even if they were intended as mere balancing elements.

It's inescapable that DnD specifically is an implied setting whether it's Planescape or Greyhawk or Ravenloft... it's just the DnD setting with slight variations since it used the same elements and balance points like class balance and spell lists. The variations in those settings are cosmetic at best.

So any balancing elements will be setting elements with far-ranging consequences. For example, deciding that fighting guys will be balanced with spellcasters already radically alters the DnD setting and it doesn't matter if those balancing elements are more magical fighters or spellcasters with strong prohibitions against martial skills.

I can't take "wizards can't have armies" seriously. If you keep evil wizards from Sarumaning it up with an army of Orcs you have committed an unforgivable genre failure; and once the possibility of an Orc army is made available to wizards, the barn door has been incinerated and the cows are long gone. There simply isn't any obvious utility difference between having a bunch of tiny men and having a bunch of tiny men who happen to be Orcs.

If you want to balance sword heroes and wizards, you need to find a different toggle to go at than "no sorcerer kings, magic armies, dark lords, witch queens, or magically compelled troops exist". Because in addition to the fact that not having an army of tiny men is rather dubious as a limitation for a game where actually being in situations where you can use your army at all is extremely optional, you're talking about taking a giant shit on every piece of source material from Lord of the Rings and Wheel of Time to Sleeping Beauty and Snow White.

Armies of tiny men are by default of extremely limited utility against both Dungeons & Dragons, which is problematic for a game that is literally called "Dungeons & Dragons". But aside from the fact that it isn't likely to work effectively as a balance mechanism, you're still talking about repudiating everyone from Queen Bavmorda to King Verity Farseer to get there. And that is bullshit.

In the source material, all of those spellcasters have generals that lead the actual armies. Bavmorda has that skull-helmet guy and The Wheel of Time is lousy with generals from Mat to sexy amazon women. Thulsa Doom has a dream-team of mustached generals.

The source material has Team Evil in a party structure even if one member of that party is nominally "in charge" because they are the King or head priest or something. The warriors lead the armies and the spellcaster shows up once in a while to cast some big spell.

This means that "no armies for spellcasters" is only a PC restriction. Team Evil doesn't have to change at all because nothing in the game or the story changes when three BBEGs work together.

The idea that spellcasters should be able to do everything is a DnD Spellcaster Cocksucking Idea (tm). The source material actually works very hard to put limitations on spellcasters so that there is a reason for other characters to be meaningful and to make storytelling possible by avoiding Mary Sue-ism.

PS. As for Sauron, I can't tell you anything about his command structure. He's never on-screen, so there is no evidence from which we can draw conclusions about whether he commands troops. For all we know, Sauron doesn't even exist and they just keep the legend alive as a recruiting tool.

I didn't mention Sauron. I don't even want to get into an argument about what class he is, because he spends most of his on-screen time as a giant flaming eyeball. Saruman. The Many Colored.

Image

He has a staff. He has an orb. His actual title is "wizard". He lives in a fucking archetypical wizard tower. And he has his own army of fucking Orcs. Orcs which he personally makes rousing speeches to before he sends them into battle himself. You can't even herp derp around about how he has lieutenants and therefore it doesn't count. Because he fucking doesn't. He rallies his own Orcish troops his own damn wizardly self.

Image

This is just not negotiable. Evil wizards have evil armies. Removing armies from wizards isn't just an obviously ineffective game balance tool, or a laughably Herculean task in an RPG where player characters could just wear a mask and have money, it's completely unacceptable on first principles. You cannot make even the most token attempt to represent the genre and seriously suggest making tiny men be unobtainable as an accessory for sorcerers.

Saruman's troops are led by Grishnákh for much of the movie, an orc from Mordor with his own backstory detailed in the books. Check the link for the list of other orcs who led various orc forces.

A single speech does not equal leading troops. It just means that you are the leader of the BBEG party. Maybe burning a Bardic Music charge on behalf of the party.

As to enforcing this genre convention, it's trivially easy. You just say that troops don't follow spellcasters even if those guys conceal their identity because spellcasters radiate an aura of magical unease that means that normal people won't trust them or take order.

It doesn't alter stories at all because there is no meaningful difference between the party sorcerer telling the party warrior to send in troops and the sorcerer directly commanding the troops, but the game is altered because it gives the warrior something that he feels is his.

Basically, it's no different than the warrior asking the party Wizard to cast some buffs on him, except in this case it's the party Wizard asking the Fighter to send in the troops. Working as a team causes overlap in functional skill coverage.

So tell me K, how does "has an army of little peons who are mopped up like so much trash by any challenge worthy of his name and can't even follow him many places" a useful ability for a party member? Or am I missing something here?

Conquering cities. Placing claims on territory. Manning catapults and ballista and other weapons that can harm big things. Forcing governments to do things (or stop doing things, as the case may be). Guarding things and raising the alarm for the PCs.

Out-of-combat story shit, basically.

Armies in fantasy stories are out-of-combat problem solving no different from a Wizard's teleport or alarm spell, except they deal in the sphere of things that DnD has always handwaved, namely the ruling of stuff from the smallest village to the largest nation.

Listen guys this isn't going to go anywhere it's just like the CR 3 Vrock where K has latced on to a tangental point and isn't going to let go. Let's noy have him fill the entire thread with him spazzing out.

So K you seem to be very commited to having "has army of tiny men" as being a major thing for mundane guys. However having an army of tiny men is a really shitty high level ability when in comes down to it. How dose making having an army of tiny men exclusive to mundane guys not still have them as a shitty high level concept.

K wrote:A single speech does not equal leading troops. It just means that you are the leader of the BBEG party.
Please tell me you aren't being fucking serious. That is without a doubt, the weakest excuse I have ever heard. Yes, he has some low level subordinates whose names you can find in LotR wikis, but they are not members of his party, they aren't even cohorts. They are lieutenants, and sometimes he orders his tiny men around directly without even going through them.

Or how about Ravenna, the witch queen from Snow White and the Huntsman? Yes, she has a brother who is a fighter and he leads troops around sometimes, and he puts together squads of elites a few times so we can guess that he has that as a class feature. But after he's dead, her witch kingdom continues to march soldiers around, and they plainly take orders from her. And there's the whole fucking shard army that is animated 100% by Ravenna's magic and doesn't take orders from anyone but her. No matter how hair splitting you want to get, it's simply impossible to argue that she doesn't have the ability to order tiny men around.

I mean, I could literally sit here and rattle off various witch queens, sorcerer lords, necromancer generals, army conjurers, and just plain leaders of men who happen to be wizards all day. We start with the Wicked Witch of the West and end with Emperor Palpatine? Or maybe King Galbatorix? I don't even fucking care. The idea that you could even seriously make the argument that evil wizards don't iconically have evil armies is so deeply absurd that it defies rational discourse. Check out TVTropes' entry for the Big Bad and just fucking count how many of those dudes are both wizards and leaders of men and when you get to more than you have fingers you can shut all the way up.
Omegon wrote:how does "has an army of little peons who are mopped up like so much trash by any challenge worthy of his name and can't even follow him many places" a useful ability for a party member?
In the small skirmish minigame, they are not worth very much. There are occasional enemies that are "weak to massed arrow fire" or some shit, but at high levels they are rare and usually there are plenty of other ways to take them out. Having a bunch of dudes is one of the ways you can compete in the mass battles mini-game, and is a necessity to compete in that arena if you don't have access to magic that functions on a mass battle scale (note: not all wizards have such magic).

In other fields of endeavor it is variably useful. You can set your pile of tiny men to work fields, build stuff, gather virgins, and otherwise engage in economic activity. Having tiny men is necessary and sufficient to collect various kinds of income (such as tax incomes from baronies). They can also give you information in the form of scouting, sentries, or just plain rumors from the villages. Having tiny men at all is a source of certain kinds of clues and an early warning system for manticore attack.

It's a fine enough thing to have, and obviously more useful if you're going to actually do the kingdom management and Battlesystem™ portion of the game. But not having it is in no way a meaningful concession to game balance. Nor is it reasonable to deny tiny men to any major archetype. I mean, between Dark Lords (Wizard + Tiny Men), Thieves Guilds (Rogue + Tiny Men), Crusades (Clerics + Tiny Men), and Barbarian Hordes (Fighters + Tiny Men), tiny men is simply and obviously a choice that needs to be available to everyone who makes it to Name Level.

Yes, you can continue to adventure in Paragon levels without having tiny men, but if you want to go the tiny men route you can just do that.

Those are Dunlendings, Saruman's allies who struck a deal with him to fight in one battle in exchange for like all of Rohan. They were never directly under Saruman's control any more than the armies of Gondor were under Gandalf's. Feel free to find an action figure that proves me wrong.

That said, an army of tiny men is not really enough to balance out casters and martial guys, if only because casters can do most of what armies can do just by using spells. They can't directly tax baronies or whatever, but they totally can just conjure gold so it doesn't really matter.

It's also worth pointing out that in the vast majority of fantasy settings, if you stab a wizard who doesn't manage to react in time, they just die. Sure, they've got vast and mighty sourceries that can turn the air in your lungs to fire or freeze time or transform your weapons to powder, but a foot of steel in their chest keeps them from actually doing any of those things. And they can only do those things to a finite extent. Actually, Races Of War sums it up pretty well:
"You can only breathe fire every couple of seconds, I have so many tiny men that you cannot win."
A Memory Of Light demonstrates this pretty well; the battles between tiny men are influential because there is not enough channeling firepower in the entire world to actually kill all of them. Armies with channelers beat armies without channelers, but channelers don't beat proportionately sized armies (that is to say, armies that outnumber them 500+ to one, which seems to be about the soldiers-to-channelers ratio of Seanchan/Aiel). So Mat is the most important guy for the Forces of Light because he can coordinate his channelers and tiny men, while Demandred is the most important guy for the Shadow in part because he's personally a huge badass but also because he can command his channelers and tiny men better than anyone else on his side.

Specific example from AMoL:
In Kandor, the entire White Tower takes to the field. They obliterate the first wave of Trollocs, but after a while their capacity to transform the field of battle into explosions is insufficent to stop the Trollocs from getting into serious battle with their pike lines. Now, Kandor is the only theatre where the Light forces the Trolloc armies to fall back, but that was a trap; Demandred finally commits his own channelers and hundreds of thousands of his most competent tiny men to battle at an opportune time. Meanwhile, the Shadow deploys most of their channelers to Tarwin's Gap at first, but the only channeling that gives them a decisive advantage is Graendal mind-controlling the enemy commander. There are channelers and cannons supporting Elayne, but they get forced to withdraw to a different country even though the only significant channeling on the Shadow's side is once again mind-controling one guy into moving his tiny men around in literally the worst possible manner.

Isn't the ability to have cohorts who command troops effectively identical to the ability to command troops? Just sayin'.

You are being obstinate and retarded to a degree that is difficult to comprehend. First of all, your offensively ridiculous goalpost shifting isn't even accurate, considering how many times in the history of absolutely everything evil wizards have said "Guards! Seize them!" without having to turn to a subordinate to request an order for seizing of them to be conveyed.

Secondly, you noting that evil wizards are extremely frequently at the tops of piles of tiny men so large and hierarchical that they have sub commanders, sub-sub-commanders, and even sub-sub-sub-commanders under them is in no way furthering your argument. When you have smallish piles of tiny men, or disorganized piles of tiny men, you command them without delegation. If you have large and organized piles of tiny men, you have a chain of command. The fact that wizards appear in both roles simply means that the entire conceivable gamut of tiny men command is available to wizards.

So we have instances where evil wizards directly command groups of tiny men:

And we have instances where evil wizards have so many tiny men that they have generals who have captains who have sergeants who have squads of tiny men:

And you have everything in between. Because fucking wizards have fucking tiny men that they command. That's how it fucking works. And literally no amount of goalpost shifting it is possible for you to pull out of your ass is going to change that.

Frank, your example of a wizard who "directly commands tiny men" is a wizard who has a lackey who directly commands tiny men. Specifically, Jafar's got this guy as a subordinate:

And in fact this is an unusually strong example of the wizard needing the fighter to send the orders, since Jafar never gives direct orders to the guards because he has people to do that for him because he is the leader of the Evil Party.

Seriously, it is perfectly reasonable to mechanically represent the dark wizard BBEG with an evil army by giving him a Dragon who has the actual army abilities, and then the Dragon orders his men to do whatever the BBEG tells them. This is still reasonable even if it isn't precisely in keeping with every single iconic wizard ever, because the basic concept is still totally doable and not even hard.

Again, though, I doubt the abilities of an army of tiny men to keep up with a D&D caster.
