Reserve currency (particularly when the real mechanical use is for prices in the rulebook) doesn't have to be something people actually use pay with. It's a fixed price, and you can pay that price in whatever the seller will accept, whether it's dollars, chickens, cocaine, belts of MG ammo, 15 year old girls or gold.

And yes, milligrams work for little things.

Glaciers growing down north america again, closing off oil and gas fields in the region for example . . and you'd get barren tundra like wastelands too . .
And if it was caused by the various rent seeking organizations coercing the various world governments to "save the planet", all the better.

"Sorry about the 200 feet of ice covering Nashville, but with my billions from selling 'Carbon Offsets' I've moved to my private Caribbean island."

What could possibly result in people distrusting the media, science and governments more then having an ice age result from "The Fight to Stop Global Warming"?

There's a fair few that could be bullshitted into an interesting global fuckup. Genetically engineered plants taking over large areas and being viciously burnt back where they're encroaching on cities, etc.

I don't think we want people distrusting science because the scientists were wrong on a huge global scale. I'd rather have people distrusting science because every new innovation that's going to usher us into a bright, shining future is just another way for the man to keep us down. The worry in punk isn't that scientists are wrong, it's that hell is other people, and the more effective and connected everyone is, the more people are able to be hell for you. I could totally get behind something like Windup Girl with genetically engineered plant blights or super-crops gone wrong, as an explanation for why everybody is eating soy and yeast, but that's a deliberate dickery/unintended consequence sort of thing.

If anything, it would make people miss technology and harbour a strong dislike for dandelion eating elves . .
people would kill for something to burn, people would move out of the coutry to huddle in the bigger cities . .
New York could get overrun by glaciers . .

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

Global cooling is not going to happen for exactly the same reason that Native Americans are not going to be kick all the White Men out of the Central US.

Because it is stupid. "Lol it's the opposite of what really happens" is not actually particularly amusing. Global Cooling has the added problem that if you stick something into your setting as a future trend without blaming magic you're implicitly endorsing the science (or lack thereof) behind it. Global cooling is stupid coming and going. Either a) it's false that carbon generates a greenhouse effect, in which case acting to prevent global warming has no effect at all because less carbon does not actually cool the planet, or b) the global warming people are right, in which case there's pretty much no way to actually drop the temperature of the planet several degrees while also industrializing.

Anyways, the standard situation in Cyberpunk is more or less that current trends that will fuck up society if nothing is done about them have nothing done about them. So the Federal Government locks up on the debt ceiling until eventually it effectively stops existing because no one has the sense to comprise. Large quantites of cropland go fallow when their owners can't afford new GM seeds and the current plants don't produce any because of terminator genes. There's some sort of war with Stuxnet-like viruses being employed and wrecking infrastructure across the globe. Global warming continues and Freon becomes both valuable and banned.

That's more like what cyberpunk has.

Well, yeah. Which is why the little ice age ending around 1850 is so interesting...
