English, words, pluralities, etc

Post by Prak »

On the subject that cropped up in the 5e thread... I personally like the idea of using the greek form to talk about multiples of octopus (octopodes). I just like the sound of it.

Also:

"The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and riffle their pockets for new vocabulary."

Cuz apparently I gotta break this down for you dense motherfuckers- I'm trans feminine nonbinary. My pronouns are they/them.

There's a certain wonderful playfulness inherent in knowingly and intentionally using language incorrectly. My personal favourite is to use the word "superlative" as a superlative.

You're both being dumb because Octopuses, Octopi, and Octopodes, are all corect pluralization of octopus. Because English is a fucking mess of a language and people are pretentious dicks. If there must be one word to rule them all can't we just agree to use octopussies?

Also, Prak, start writing a transcript of that video in a British accent, it would amuse me.

Fuck you Haruhi is clearly the best moe anime, and we will argue about how Haruhi and Nagato are OP and um... that girl with blond hair? is for shitters.

If you like Lucky Star then I will explain in great detail why Lucky Star is the a shitty shitty anime for shitty shitty people, and how the characters have no interesting abilities at all, and everything is poorly designed especially the skill challenges.

I wonder if there's an app to exchange every single word or phrase you type for homophones or other internet-annoying uses?

[edit] Take this book and run it backwards over the input text.

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

I personally prefer octopodes. Octopuses just feels clunky in my mouth. But I also acknowledge that in most cases the person I'm speaking to will have no fucking clue what I mean if I say octopodes, thus missing the entire point of words. So unless I feel the urge to explain the origins of the word (which, sometimes, I do) I mostly just say octopuses.

I am a big fan of phrases like, "let's drinkify up in this bitch!"

Which means, "would you like me to buy some beer?"

And other gems like translatify, and cookifyed beans.
I only use them around people that speak english well. The perplexed look on the face of my victim brings me sick serial killer style pleasure.

I love playing with words, but also tend to keep ones spoken by non-native friends and small children.
My son makes me laugh. Maybe he'll make you laugh, too.

I still use the phrase "perpetrate some smithery" from Kingdom of Loathing.

I like verbing words - you can verb anything if you put your mind to it.
