I'm going to predict that he's the FF's version of Rincewind.

I like surprises. Let's just board the ship and see what misfortune he'll bring upon us!

And blame him for them.

He remains evasive on the subject of exactly what spells he knows. If you really want to know, you are going to have to pressure him.
"Your master was wrong on that point. Else Sir Puppykicker over here would not have pressured me to prepare so many healing spells. Healing spells are a vital part of surviving any quest for glory, and generally you have to survive it to succeed at it.

Dappa natters on about certain finer points of thaumatology. Asking without saying "please" doesn't seem to be enough pressure.
He doesn't want to tell you. Commit to actually threatening him with force, or move on.

"Duh, Manstaff, get off his back. Unless..." Bajinga turns to Dappa, "unless you don't actually know any spells at all and pretending you do to go on an adventure. Then 'fess up."

Dirk O'Killitwithfire remains silent, figuring that trying to get Dappa to reveal his spells is a lost cause. Besides, Dirk thinks, hokey religions and ancient spells are no match for a good dirk by your side, and we've got plenty of those. At absolute worst, Dappa might be of use for making the party look bigger than it really is, which is of use against bands of cowardly foes.

Willie breaks his silence. "If the lad wants to join us, he's welcome," he says, shrugging.

Turning to Dappa, he adds: "You do realize the danger you'll be getting yourself into, though. This enemy we're facing was able to murder your own master. For your sake, I hope you're up to the task. One thing's for sure, you lack for neither courage nor motivation."

Just a reminder that from the deck of the ship, exits are: Fore, Aft, and Hatch. You could also climb into the rigging, I guess, but I'll tell you in advance there's no content up there.

I want to take a look in the Fore.

Should we split up to explore the ship or stay together?

I figure we should keep at least 2 people at each area. Dirk will cover whatever needs covering.

"I'll check the hatch." Bajinga ties the rope to the lantern, lights it and opens the hatch. Provided nothing bursts out of it, she lowers the lantern down on the rope. If everything still looks safe, she sets the lantern on the floor of the cargo hold(?) and descends, sword in hand.

Manstaff will follow Bajinga into the hatch.

Here we go again...

Bajinga/Manstaff:
The hatch opens to reveal a convenient ladder leading down into the darkness. Maneuvering your rope-lantern around the ladder takes a little doing, but reveals nothing threatening, so you descend.

Beneath the deck is a large cargo hold. Edging down the ladder, you find yourselves in the quiet darkness of this storage area. Peculiar smells assail your nostrils, and the damp warmth of the hold feels strangely alive. Hanging from a crossbeam is an unlit lantern. Littered around the floor nearby are four barrels. One of these has fallen on its side and its contents – salted fish – have spilled out. Towards the aft part of the hold you can dimly make out a large packing-case. Forward there seem to be half a dozen smaller cases, stacked together. You can hear the occasional soft skittering noise – probably rats.
Sir Puppykicker/Dirk O'Killitwithfire:
Passing through the door beside the ship's nameplate, you come into a short narrow passage. At the end of the passage, a ladder leads below through an opening. To the left is an ordinary door. To the right is something far less mundane.

Image

Set into the right wall is a portal with no door. All you can see is a sheet of darkness within the door-frame. Drawn around this frame are hundreds of tiny figures, engaged in curious activities such as running, jumping, and wrapping their legs around their heads.
Willie/Dirk von Facestabber
The aft door opens onto a passage running perpendicular to the deck. At the left end of the passage is an opening with a ladder leading below. In front of you are three doors, presumably leading to aft cabins.

(Bajinga is wearing gloves.) "Yay, rats on a magic ship." Bajinga lights the second lantern, then checks the barrels of fish.

"Let's peek through the normal door, and unless there's something of great interest and/or we take whatever is of interest then go to the mystery door." Dirk whispers to Sir Puppykicker. "Once we're heading to said mystery door, one of us should stay back, tie both of our ropes to the other and pull him back it if it seems like he's in trouble. We should probably come up with a signal for danger/want to be pulled back."

Did Dappa stay on the deck? If nobody else wants him, Sir Puppykicker will drag the apprentice along with his group.

"Sounds like a plan." Sir Puppykicker agrees, moving forward to peek through the normal-looking door.

Bajinga/Manstaff:
Opening one of the barrels, you find that it is full of fish and salt. Immediately a rat leaps from the barrel, bites you (lose 1 STAMINA) and races off into the shadows.

Image
Sir Puppykicker/Dirk O'Killitwithfire:
The door opens easily, and you find yourself looking into a smallish, sparsely furnished cabin. A sturdy hammock has been lashed between two stout timbers, and an unlit lantern hangs from the ceiling. Around it dangle various types of fish; all neatly stuffed, and tied to the rafters with pieces of string. In the center of the room is a large box, at least a yard high, which is clamped to the floor by iron bands. There is a stool in front of it, and it has two small holes bored into its side – possibly peepholes.

Image
Willie/Dirk von Facestabber
The door opens to reveal a well-furnished cabin, covered with a thick layer of dust. Judging by the thick silk tapestry and opulent armchairs, it belonged to the ship's master. There is a dresser with a mirror on the far side of the room, near the velvet-curtain-enclosed bunk. A drawer of the dresser is slightly open. On the walls hang a selection of cutlasses, a cat-o'-nine-tails, and various torture implements. To your right there is a rough wooden perch.

Check out if there's anything on the perch, and if not, then open carefully the drawer using the dagger. Touch nothing bare-handed.

"Looks like we got stowaways. Still, we don't want to miss anything."

Manstaff prepares to pry the next barrel lid off using his manstaff to add as much distance between him and the barrel as possible. If this proves to be a futile silly endeavour within 10 seconds of the attempt starting he stops.

Sir Puppykicker takes the lantern, figuring that it's always useful to have an extra, especially one he can get for free.

He's less than enthusiastic about the box with the peephole. It looks too much like a trap bait. He expresses his suspicions to both Dirk and Dappa and waits to hear their opinions.

"It probably is a trap," Dirk remarks. "I could probe it with my spear at a distance to see if anything happens, although I'm reluctant to ruin a perfectly good spear. Perhaps I could tie the gaff hook to the shaft of my spear and probe it that way? Or do you think we just shouldn't bother with this and move on to the next room?"

"I think it's worth a try....although I'm not sure if the hook can fit through that peephole.Still, no harm trying. We've got 4 of those hook, so we can afford to risk one."
