The necromancer throws out his left hand, his fingers grasping at the air. From the darkest corners of the room, tendrils of shadow began to move - swirling and twisting as they are drawn along the ground.

You jump aside as a black shadow brushes past your legs, to join the others that are swirling around the mage, forming a dense circle of darkness. Then, from out of this shifting gloom, shapes begin to form... like devilish silhouettes.

'Shades!' growls Nyms. 'He is summoning shades.'

The dark phantoms grow long thin arms - each one ending in a frightening array of black-curved claws. Between their broadening shoulders, tentacles of fog ooze into ghostly faces with hollow eye sockets and toothless mouths. In a heartbeat, there are six of the creatures surrounding the necromancer.

Suddenly, one gives a horrible banshee-like wail. It springs forward, its sharp talons raking through the air. Nyms reacts instantly by ducking beneath its blow and thrusting his twin blades through its middle. With a howl of agony, the shade is blown apart - sending whirling ribbons of shadow flying in all directions.

'Take the mage,' orders Nyms, 'I'll handle the shades.' As the swordsman spins his blades into the mass of dark bodies, you charge the necromancer:
SpeedMagicArmorHealth
Necromancer13101070

Special Abilities
- Heightened Magic: You cannot use sidestep, evade, or vanish in this combat.
- Venom: Once you have taken damage from the mage, at the end of every combat round you must automatically lose 2 health.
Yes Nyms, you take the horde of weak things, I'll use my AOE on the one strong guy.
Round 1: Us 10+13, Him 4+13; ignite: 10 damage, he's at 60. *DOTs* He's at 57.
Round 2: Us 7+13, Him 6+13; 6+17-10 damage, he's at 44. *DOTs* He's at 40.
Round 3: Us 12+13, Him 4+13; 4+17-10 damage, he's at 29. *DOTs* He's at 24.
Round 4: Us 9+13, Him 8+13; 4+17-10 damage, he's at 13. *DOTs* He's at 7.
Round 5: Us 5+13, Him 2+13; 1+17-10 damage, he's defeated!
Wow, look at all the shit Trellis didn't take there. Suited or not, I think she likes the whip.
All around you, the shades shriek and holler as Nyms expertly slays them one by one. Meanwhile, your attacks have forced the necromancer back against the wall of the tomb. The mage makes a last desperate stab with his dagger, but you are ready for it, dodging aside and delivering the killing blow. As the necromancer's lifeless body slides down the wall, the last of the shades vanishes into thin air.

Searching the mage's remains, you find 50 gold crowns and one of the following rewards:
Spite (left hand: dagger) +2 speed, +3 brawn, Ability: venom, Requirement: rogue
Hood of night (head) +2 speed, +3 magic, Ability: deceive (as trickster)
Ebon boots (feet) +2 speed, +1 brawn, Ability: fearless (sp; 1/combat, +2 speed for 1 round)
• If you are a mage...
• Otherwise...
As a mage you may also take the following item:
Bone fetish (talisman) +1 armor, Ability: necromancer
You must have the bone fetish talisman equipped if you wish to learn the necromancer career. As soon as this item is unequipped or you learn a new career, you lose the abilities associated with this career. The necromancer has the following abilities:
Shades (pa): At the start of combat, you automatically summon a group of shades to aid you. The shades add 2 to each dice of damage you roll for the duration of the combat. Once summoned, they remain until you sacrifice them (see below).
Sacrifice (co): You may use this ability after an opponent has rolled their damage dice/score to instantly sacrifice your shades. The shades absorb all the damage and you are unharmed. This destroys your shades until the next combat.
With your foes defeated, the four of you hurry from the tomb. Nyms takes the lead, guiding you out of the valley and back onto the dusty hills of the bone fields. From somewhere above you, here is a hellish piercing shriek. You look back, scanning the grey-black clouds, but see nothing.

'Probably a wyvern tailing us,' says Janna, sprinting alongside you. 'It won't attack us if it is alone.'

At last, you see the welcoming lights of Redguard's camp ahead. As you come within sight of the walls, you hear the clamor of the guards' bell. Minutes later and you are standing outside the tower, surrounded by an eager crowd of soldiers. Redguard joins you, smiling broadly.

'Janna, you're safe,' he says, his eyes misting with relief and happiness.

She nods, hooking her bow over her arm. The ranger looks solemn, despite the warm welcome. 'I think we should talk,' she says, seriously.

Redguard shrugs. 'You may report, Janna. We have no secrets here.'

The ranger looks around at the faces of the young fresh-faced troops, then nods. 'Very well. The rumors that you spoke of are true. I saw an army - they're camped in the eastern section of the valley. I estimated about a thousand troops, but there could have been more.'

There are gasps frm the assembled soldiers. Redguard visibly pales, shuffling his feet nervously. 'Those necromancers have been busy. Are they undead?'

Janna nods 'I saw bone giants, skeletons, ghouls with packmasters - we got chased by some wyverns and a flesh golem. It's a serious force and I imagine it will only grow with time. These fields are covered in bones: all the building blocks those mages need to create an unstoppable force.'

'So, you made it back.' All eyes turn as Inquisitor Mathis strides over. His steely tone contains no hint of pleasure. 'Come here, child.' He beckons Janna to move closer. She complies, glaring at the man with open contempt. Pushing back her hair, the inquisitor places a hand on her forehead and closes his eyes. Janna immediately winces, trying to pull away, but some force has her rooted to the spot. When the inquisitor finally removes his hand, she stumbles back, looking pale and drawn.

The inquisitor opens his eyes, his own expression haggard. 'So, it is true,' he says, a new note of fear in his voice. 'We will need reinforcements. Redguard, with me.' He turns and marches into the tower, with the captain following close on his heels. Return to the quest map to continue your adventures.
Pick a loot, decide if you want to go necrosleepy, let me know if you want to buy one of the premium deals from the peddler (now we can afford it), and then...

Well, the era of stacked DOTs is coming to an end, as Trellis revisits her Goth phase.
•If you have already participated in the quest The battle of the bone fields...

Redguard's garrison is smaller than you thought. As you walk the perimeter of the crumbling tower, you count only a smattering of guards – all looking sullen and deeply uncomfortable to be stationed in this outlandish camp.

The tower itself houses supplies and sleeping quarters for yourself and the rest of the garrison, whilst the area to the north of the building has been put aside as a training yard. Here, Nyms and Caeleb spend most of their time, sparring with each other or working with the guards on their stances and moves.

Near the edge of the camp, within the shadows of the stone wall, two large tents have been set up. One houses an infirmary, where Lansbury is tending the sick and the wounded. The other is a makeshift war room, with maps and charts covering various benches and tables. At its center is a stone table, with a floating map of the bone fields hovering above it. You assume that this is some leftover magic or device from the time of the shadow war, which Redguard has now pressed into fresh service.

• Visit the training yard?
• Visit the war room?
• Visit the infirmary?

Visit the war room, because in-character we'd want to know where they think the next most important loot objective within our current abilities is.

As you enter the tent, your eyes become fixed on the floating map of the bone fields. Everything on it has been picked out in the minutest detail, from the hills and valleys to the sprawling city of Talanost to the south.

Redguard is observing the map with a furrowed brow. 'Things could go ill for us, if what you say is true,' he grumbles.

You walk around the map, following the line of a road that leads through the bone fields to the walls of the city. There, arranged in a loose circle, is an army encampment. You can even see the banners atop the tents, fluttering in an unseen wind.

'That is Ravenwing's camp,' explains Redguard. 'The last if the city defenders are holed up there with the mages. They're trying to hold out until the king's army arrives from the east. It could be four days or more before that force comes within sight of the walls – until then, we're on our own.'

You lean closer over the map, noticing a faint dome of light glittering above the ruined city. 'What is that?' you ask, puzzled. 'It looks like some kind of shield.'

'It is,' nods Redguard. 'The mages in the camp have created it. It's a barrier that keeps the legion trapped and contained within the city. I don't know how much longer they can hold it, though.'

As your eyes trace the rest of the map, they come to rest on two statues, standing atop jagged hills of rock. A closer inspection reveals that they are angels, with flowing robes and swan-like wings. 'The angels must awaken,' you mutter to yourself.

Reguard looks up. 'What was that?'

'Something Jenlar told me before he died. He said the angels must awaken. What do you think that means?'

The captain cups his chin, looking perplexed. 'They're just statues, I thought' some kind of marker left over from the war. Not investigated them myself, but I'll see what Lansbury knows. She always has her nose in a book.'

• Ask about Zul Ator?
• Leave and explore the rest of the camp?

'Zul was a great man – a genius. He served in the army for many years as a battle mage. That is when I knew him – we fought side-by-side on many occasions.' Redguard traces a thin scar along his left cheek, clearly remembering some past encounter. 'Then Zul left the army to take a teaching post at the university. It was there that they discovered...' he stops, glancing up at you nervously. 'They discovered he was shadow born.'

Your eyebrows arch in surprise. 'You never knew?'

Redguard shakes his head. 'Not all shadow born have the mark on their arms,' he says grimly. 'Zul was caught practicing the dark arts – dabbling in things he shouldn't. So he was sentenced and imprisoned.' The captain snorts, shaking his head. 'Like four walls would ever stop him. I think it was a month later that he escaped. He was never seen or heard from again – until now. Sounds like he's been busy... plotting the end of us all.'

You think back to your brief encounter with the hooded mage – the man who had used you as a puppet to gain the last piece of the Nexus. Would he use the same power again to control you? The thought sends a cold shiver up your spine.
We're sent back to a previous reference, so it's

No arguments here.

Is this an exposition tree, or is our order of visit going to mean something?

Oops, that was the war room. It's yard or infirmary. I don't think order of visit matters, but it's more than just exposition. I remember that at least you can pick up the profession of the supporting character who shares your class.

Check out the infirmary then; I suspect we'll get a healer class. It'd have to be really good to replace the necromancer though.

Inside the tent, every inch of space is covered in pallet beds, laid out in regimented rows. Most are occupied, with young soldiers displaying various ailments and wounds. Lansbury is perched on a stool at the end of the tent, next to a cabinet filled with bottles, pots, and ointments. She has a book open on her lap, using the light from a candle to illuminate the small writing.

She looks up as you approach, removing her spectacles. 'Can I help you with something?' she asks with concern.

• Ask if there are any helpful potions?
• Ask about the sick and wounded?
• Ask how Lansbury came to be in this camp?
• Ask about the book?
I'll just go through 'em. First, the potions:
Lansbury puts aside her book and gestures to the nearby potions. 'I do have some regulation healing potions. There's also a few swiftness potions there – useful when the old muscles are starting to flag.'

You run your finger along the row, lifting several from the shelf. Lansbury looks at them and nods. 'Each of those will be 50 gold crowns. Yes, I know – I'm sorry, but you must understand, all that stock is for the army. I have a limited inventory and with that inquisitor sniffing around I can't afford to be seen giving away vital supplies.'

You may purchase any quantity of the following for 50 gold crowns each:
Flask of healing (backpack) 1 use, use at any time to restore 10 health.
Elixir of swiftness (backpack) 1 use, increase your speed by 4 for one combat round.
So, we can buy these at any time between quests.

Next, the patients:
Lansbury looks over at the men under her charge. 'Yes, the bone fields are a dangerous place, particularly for those who are inexperienced. You see, the undead aren't the only problem. We still have the anomalies – areas of magic that are volatile and dangerous to the unwary. Most just cause a bout of sickness or fever, others can do worse things... freeze you like ice, burn you like fire... even turn you inside out.' She shudders. 'Don't worry, my healing arts are sufficient for most, but I do prefer more traditional remedies at times: bed and rest.'
Next, Lansbury herself:
I've been stationed here for twenty years ow,' says Lansbury, with a hint of pride in her voice. 'Yes, a long time – some would say too long. Oh, I know this is a dead-end garrison, but for me this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The bone fields have barely been explored or studied in any great detail. Those plains are filled with relics from that great war, not to mention magics that are now long forgotten.'

She glances down at her tabard, displaying the golden dragon on a field of green.'I have always been proud to serve the king at this outpost. Little did I know that another war is looming here. If what you say is true,' she looks up, her bright eyes catching the candlelight. 'Then it was fate I came here. I will serve the king in whatever manner I am able.'

• If you are a mage and wish to learn the Medic career...
• Otherwise...
Let's check it out:
'When you fought those undead, that was an impressive display of magic,' says Lansbury, smiling with admiration. 'I could really use an extra pair of hands around here – ones that know the healing arts.'

If you wish, you may now accept the following item:
Lady of the lamp (talisman) +1 armor, Ability: medic career
'I can't promise to teach you all that I know,' states Lansbury. 'But you look a quick study, and even the basics will be enough to help make a difference.'

The medic has the following abilities:
Mend (mo): Once per combat, heal yourself or an ally for 15 health.
Tourniquet (mo): Once per combat, remove any bleed, venom, and/or disease effects that you or an ally have been inflicted with.
As soon as the lady of the lamp talisman is unequipped or you learn a new career, you lose the abilities associated with the medic career.
Note that we can return here to pick up the Medic career at any time (even multiple times if it comes up) between quests.

Finally, the book:
'Oh, this?" Lansbury lifts up the book, turning it over in her hands. 'This is just one of the books I found in those ruins, when we met you. They're from the shadow war – yes, this is a thousand years old.' She opens the book again, smoothing down one of the yellowed pages. 'The parchment is enchanted so it will never age. This one in particular is an account of the war from a mage's apprentice. Fascinating reading.'

She looks down at the other books resting next to her chair. 'Finding these was a perilous business. But it was worth it. Some of what they contain may even help us in out upcoming struggles.'
So, do you want to go Medic? Maybe buy a consumable? And after that, do you want to check out the training yard or go after either the angel statue quest or the broken tomb quest?

I'm actually going to skip the training yard for now, because the content isn't super relevant. You can challenge either Caeleb or Nyms, and if you beat them and are a Warrior or Rogue respectively, you can learn their profession. There's no particular extra character development or anything. The only text I think is worth mentioning is that the onlookers are really impressed by your gear, which is a nice acknowledgement.

If you really want to see their combat stats or what their professions do, lmk, otherwise, moving on to quest content.
Quest: Waking the dead

'Remind me again why we're here?' Nyms is huddled in his cloak, the cold rain drippingfrom the peaked brim of his hood. In the valley below lies a vast necropolis – its crumbling buildings veiled by a ghostly mist.

Next to you, Caeleb gives a heavy sigh. 'I'm going on a hunch, nothing more. We've seen what Zul can do. His necros are raising the dead.'

'And you want us to do the same?' Nyms blows out his cheeks, rubbing his gloved hands together nervously. 'We've done some crazy things together, my friend, but this one...'

Caeleb points to a large domed structure, looming tall and ominous amidst the swirling fog. 'That is Arthurian's tomb. He was a great warrior; the leader of the Tor Knights. It was his sacrifice that helped win the shadow war.'

'The last charge,' Nyms snorts. 'Always sounded like a suicide mission to me. A hundred knights against an army of thousands. No wonder they were cut to pieces.'

Caeleb brushes the wet hair from his eyes. 'They knew they would not survive, Nyms. But their sacrifice bought time – time for crucial reinforcements to arrive from Talanost. Without their sacrifice, the king's army would have been overrun.'

'Hmm, history does have a way of over-glorifying the past.'

Lansbury leans forward, scrutinizing the tombs and ruins in the valley below. 'Let's concentrate on the facts. Zul is using necromancy to raise the Tor Knights – turning them against us. It is only a matter of time before his mages desecrate these tombs.' The elderly medic turns to Nyms. 'We cannot allow them to do this.'

'And the horn?' Nyms folds his arms stubbornly. 'I'm not risking my life for some fireside fable.'

Caeleb tugs his visor down. 'It's not a fable. Arthurian swore an oath with his last dying breath that he would return to Valeron in its time of greatest need.'

'Oh really? And who was around to hear those grand words?' Nyms puts a hand to his ear, grinning. 'According to your famous legend, all the knights were wiped out – to the very last man.'

Caeleb shakes his head. 'You should read more, Nyms. It was Jorvic Moore, the Tor Knight's standard bearer. He was mortally wounded... the medics couldn't save him, but he managed to return to the camp with Arthurian's horn – the one he used in battle a hundred times to sound his charge.'

Nyms rolls his eyes. 'And if we find this horn, he'll come along and help us battle Zul. That is what you're saying, right?'

Caeleb takes up his shield, its surface slick with rainwater. 'It comes down to faith, Nyms. I believe it's worth a try – at least.'

'And that's good enough for me,' you interject impatiently. Beneath your clothing you can feel the shadow mark burning... eager for battle.

Nyms nods, glancing up at the broiling storm-heavy sky. 'Okay, you win. But really, couldn't we have picked a better day for this?'

Caeleb draws his sword and starts down into the valley. Within seconds the plaed warrior has vanished – swallowed up by the thick banks of white fog. Drawing your own weapons, you follow the knight's tracks through the sludgy black ash.
The rain falls in relentless grey sheets, pounding the ash-covered ground and spattering off your cloak and hood. The mist that once afforded you cover has now dispersed, forcing your party to use the cover of the outlying tombs.

Minutes later, huddled cold and shivering beside the crumblign statue of some long-forgotten hero, you find yourselves looking out on a cracked stone square. At its far side stands the domed building, looking more like a temple than a tomb. A staircase leads up to its main entrance: an open doorway, flanked by two pillars of rune-covered stone.

'We're too late,' growls Caeleb.

You follow his gaze to a tall tablet of rock, rising several hundred meters into the chill grey sky. Perched on the rock's summit is a huge demonic creature.

Nyms sucks air through his teeth. 'Judah's light...'

The creature's skeletal body and tattered wings share a passing resemblance to a bone wyvern, but this monster is at least four times their size, its serrated beak and talons covered in spiked iron plates.

'What is that?' you gasp.

'Some mockery of life,' hisses Lansbury, her grip tightening around her staff. 'Zul's forces are already here. We should go back.'

Caeleb turns in surprise. 'But their presence here only lends our task a greater urgency. We have to stop them raising Arthurian and more of his knights!'

Your eyes haven't left the undead creature, marveling at the dark magics that have given it life. 'Are you suggesting that we try and slip past that?' A red fire burns in the creature's hollow eye sockets, forming a gleaming trail as its head roves back and forth. 'It's a sentry. It will alert others.'

'Bah, it's nothing worse than we've faced before,' says Nyms, drawing his twin blades. 'I have no fear of it. Besides,' he cocks his head to one side, his eyes flicking to Lansbury, 'we have a healer.'

The medic purses her lips. 'Don't be foolish. There is always another way. Look.' Lansbury points to a row of smaller outbuildings that form a ring around the temple. 'We can use those for cover and go around the other side. I'm sure this place will have another entrance of some sort.'

'What do you think?' asks Caeleb, his narrowed eyes peering at you through the visor of his helmet. 'If we don't make a decision soon, I'll be standing here in fifty pounds of rusted steel.'

• Risk a frontal assault on the temple?
