Sigrid will move to T16 so that Churlaf has a harder time getting to her and has to enter the machine to do so, duck and weave, silently bemoan her inability to shamelessly kill steal ensure Thrain isn't further injured by Osk by way of reaching and berserking at Osk, work out where she can break a hostage's chains for next turn if she's still in the machine, and hopefully not get zapped by being in the machine.

Churlaf maneuvers for a shot at Thrain.
Churlaf attack: <8> +8 ATK -3 in melee = 13
Thrain dodge: <7> -3 qik +3 skill = 7
Damage: MoS 6 +9 DAM -10 soak = 5

Hogni lashes at Astrid.
Hogni attack: <-2> +3 ATK = 1
Astrid defense: <2> +2 qik +3 skill +7 gear -2 wounds = 12

Vigfus maneuvers and shoots at Sigrid.
Vigfus attack: <8> +3 ATK -1 wound -6 moving target = 4
Sigrid dodge: <6> +2 qik +3 skill = 11

Osk heaves at Thrain with his shoulder...
Osk engagement: <8> +2 RES -1 wound = 9
Thrain resist: <9> +3 str +3 skill = 15

...then gives up and hacks.
Killer-Osk attack: <7> +3 ATK -1 wound = 9
Thrain defense: <-2> -3 qik +3 skill = -2
Damage: MoS 11 +1 DAM -10 Soak = 2
ImageNo time for the full graphic effects tonight, just folks' relative positions.

Thrain will kick Osk backwards into the whirling, gnashing gears of the machine, yelling emphatically about how "this is Scandinavia". He maneuvers his way to U15, sheathing his sword on his back and taking up his bow.

Failing that, he'll hack at Osk in a bezerk frenzy, and then move away if he manages to kill him.

VP loss for losing a comrade depends on what your rank is for VPs for the Encounter. If you'd be in 1st place, it's -75, if you'd be 2nd place it's -45, and that's as deep as this group goes.

Running Away is normally simple – just move off the map. Sometimes leaving is more restrictive, but not by default. If all surviving PCs Run Away, they all have to roll Sprint (Qik) vs the Res of the fastest surviving enemy to get away clean. Failure means that they are either beaten down (reduced to 5 hp) or have one – or possibly more – treasures stolen from them.

Thrain engagement: <2> +3 str +3 skill = 8
Killer-Osk resist: <2> +2 RES -1 wound = 3
Damage: MoS 3 +25 DAM -1 soak = 27
Killer-Osk is thrust into a set of gears that do not slow their motion even slightly as they grind him into fluid. The last thing that is seen of him is one gloved hand clawing reflexively at the air as it is drawn between the rotating teeth.

Oh damn, it looks like the board ate my last post and I didn't notice.

Round 4 Initiative
Sigrid: <13> +2 qik +3 skill +5 gear = 23
Astrid: <5> +2 qik +1 skill +2 gear -3 armor -2 wounds = 5
Thrain: <6> -3 qik +3 skill -5 armor = 1

Churlaf: <5> +7 INIT = 13
Hogni Not-normal: <6> +3 INIT = 9
Vigfus the Vain: <8> +3 INIT = 11

The turn order is:
• Sigrid/1
• Churlaf
• Vigfus
• Hogni
• Astrid
• Sigrid/2
• Thrain

The machine cannot target its own insides, so Astrid's still the only eligible target.
Big Machine lightning: Dodge (Qik) vs TN 7.
Astrid: <6> +2 qik -3 skill = 5
Damage: MoS 2 +10 DAM (armor-ignoring) = 12 (+1 wound)

((I think realising the numbers means my turn doesn't go any differently, but looks like now would be a great time to use Lie Turns To Truth. Or do you have to fire that before you see the roll...))

Sigrid looks to where the machine's bolt fell, and her eyes widen in horror and realisation; her fellow shieldmaiden wouldn't last a minute inside this unholy device, but with both her and Thrain inside the hostages were bound to target her, and the machine's workings were such that she'd have to spend as long again working out where to kick a chain into the gears if she left now.

She looked at Thrain, tilted her head indicating Astrid's direction, tried and failed to find the words to explain in time, then turned and ran... straight towards Churlaf, spear at the ready to draw first blood.

((Moving to O21 to engage Churlaf, ducking & weaving))

Sigrid attack: <6> +3 dex +3 skill +1 gear = 13
Churlaf defense: <5> +9 DFN = 14
Churlaf slips the blow, dropping his bow to sweep out his own blade and slash with it in a single motion.
Churlaf attack: <6> +8 ATK = 14
Sigrid defense: <5> +2 qik +3 skill +4 gear = 14
Damage: MoS 0 +9 DAM -3 soak = 6
The tip of Churlaf's sword trails blood, but it is merely a scratch. He follows up his swing with a savage shoulder-check.
Churlaf engagement: <2> +5 RES = 7
Sigrid resist: <9> +3 skill = 12
Sigrid nimbly rolls over his shoulder, negating the strength behind it.
Vigfus takes a shot at Thrain.
Vigfus attack: <7> +3 ATK -1 wound = 9
Thrain dodge: <4> -3 qik +3 skill = 4
Damage: MoS 5 +1 DAM -10 soak = <0

Hogni continues trying to batter Astrid.
Hogni attack: <4> +3 ATK = 7
Astrid defense: <9> +2 qik +3 skill +7 gear -3 wounds = 18

Does either S23 or R24 count as being inside the machine for all purposes? This influences what I do with my second action this round.

Those are both 'partial,' meaning that if you voluntarily move into either of them and declare that you wish to be in the machine, you are in the machine, but that kicking someone into them doesn't count.

If failing the engagement check by 10 results in Hogni being shoved as far back as P28 or O27, then Sigrid will move to P26 to engage him (because Churlaf doesn't get another action this round so can't give it up to shank me in the back, ner ner ne ner ner), standing ground.

If Hogni is not in move+attack range then Sigrid will move to R24 to be inside the machine and kick another hostage's chains into the gears..

Thrain has been contemplating a slave chained to a small metal bench, scheming how to free them. Eventually he just leans over and wrenches the bench away from it's moorings, and then hands it to the man to carry out of the machine with him.

When Vignus' shot glances off Thrain's armor, Thrain turns and stares at him with an accusatory expression. He leisurely draws an arrow from his quiver and nocks it, before quickly snapping off a shot back at him. He maneuvers his way to U21.

Round 5 Initiative
Sigrid: <4> +2 qik +3 skill +5 gear = 14
Astrid: <7> +2 qik +3 skill +5 gear -3 armor -3 wounds = 11
Thrain: <7> -3 qik +1 skill -5 armor = 0

Churlaf: <4> +7 INIT = 11
Hogni Not-normal: <9> +3 INIT = 12

The turn order is:
• Sigrid
• Hogni
• Astrid
• Churlaf
• Thrain

The machine cannot target its own insides, and Sigrid's engaged, so Astrid's still the target.
Big Machine lightning: Dodge (Qik) vs TN 7.
Astrid: <-3> +2 qik -3 skill = -4
Damage: MoS 11 +10 DAM (armor-ignoring) = 21 (+1 wound)

Okay, Astrid is at 0 hp and dying. She will croak at the end of this round unless someone performs a TN 12 Heal check on her. Don't let it happen, guys, I don't want the death penalty to my VPs any more than you do.

Well, I'm not sure what I can do about it. I'm at a base +0 on heal checks, so I have like an 8% chance of pulling that off, and even that's assuming I can either make a heal check after a double move, or single move and then heal at engagement range.

Can I pick someone up in addition to a double move? If I can dump her off the field, will her death timer pause until after this encounter (whereupon we'll hopefully be safe enough that the difficulty drops down to TN9, and a 20% chance of success)? Is there anything that could make it easier, like can Sigrid make an Aid Another roll without the skill?

Healing takes your action, so you can't do it after a double move, but you can do it at engagement range.

No, no, and alas no. Sigrid could make her own check, and it's not at much worse odds than yours.

Oh wait, Heal is Per/Int... does that mean I can choose? I'd attempt it if it was a Per roll at +4, meaning a 30% chance of not just wasting a turns worth of VP plus however many I lose getting shot by lightning.

This is what I get for acting without consulting the flowchart - I was actually planning for Sigrid or Thrain to draw the machine's fire, but forgot it'd prioritise unengaged targets.

Like, enough that I might've moved instead to S29 to be shot at by lightning.

If that is beyond the pale for a retcon and the stakes make that more beyond the pale instead of less, then Sigrid's going to Q29 for the hail mary healing check without having to disengage Hogni - assuming that failure doesn't make the situation worse.

Bad Heal checks specifically can't harm other players. They left the door open on self-surgery going wrong, but never actually implemented it.

Sigrid heal: <13> +3 dex -3 skill -2 tools = 11
Well that's just perverse.

Hogni strikes at Sigrid.
Hogni attack: <-4> +3 ATK = -1
Sigrid defense: <4> +2 qik +3 skill +4 gear = 13

Churlaf maneuvers.

Thrain grimaces as Astrid goes down, but doesn't have the first clue about how to treat someone struck by lightning. He fires an arrow at Churlaf and moves to R18.
