Thank you for your votes. I will break the 1-1 tie by having Xu Shiyou go down the passage to his right. Xu Shiyou arrives at paragraph 158, where he meets a figure with a demon mask etched permanently in his memory and Meng gesturing urgently to him. He has the choice of waiting to see what Meng has to say, having the Fear being upon him, or attacking the figure.

Votes registered, Xu Shiyou will wait to see what Meng has to say, and answer “My mind” when asked.

Xu Shiyou goes to paragraph 233 to listen to Meng, who says that Xu Shiyou can leave this place if he can say where he is. Xu Shiyou says “My mind” and is directed to paragraph 152. The world then goes black and Xu Shiyou loses 2 Ferocity. He has a clay bowl and a red robe, so paragraph 217 is his next destination.

You come to, standing in front of Dry Jade. In your hands is the clay bowl, which the Abbot takes from you. He turns to another monk standing near by, a monk with a white face, and with a smile, he flings the bowl to the floor, where it breaks into a thousand shards (cross the clay bowl off your Equipment List). Note down the word ‘turn’ on your Adventure Sheet. Dry Jade turns to you. ‘The true prize of the Deep Land is in your heart,’ he declared. ‘You have nothing more to learn from us, so return to the world.’ Your STAMINA is restored to is permanent level. Turn to 281.

At paragraph 281, Xu Shiyou has a choice either to travel to the south or head northwards.

This book isn't the first to use codewords, but for most of the others, the individual words themselves usually reference the events they record quite clearly. In Blackvein Prophecy, the words may look alien, but are actually just foreign ways of pronouncing certain terms that describe the spells. Stephen Hand and Jonathan Green both used reversed versions of nouns that clearly links to the events where they're recorded ("Rotkod" = encounter with Doktor Welsh, "Reggad" = encountering Assassin's Dagger spell).

Here, a lot of the words ("when", "to") don't describe anything on their own and have zero meaning without being linked to another word, so I believe, rather than being checked individually, their purpose is to combine with other words to form a clue.

If you put the words in sequence, they more or less form a coherent message. We know that "when" is necessary, because we were automatically reset to the fight with the Death Messenger after we failed the first time, and that looks like a likely start to a sentence anyway.

So combining what we've had between our 2 games, the clue looks something like:

"When king offers <<something>> turn to 198."

Which looks like a legit clue one is likely to find in these gamebooks.

As to what the king was supposed to offer, "wood" probably wasn't the right word. It was the only word that clearly links to the event that it records (we were training by stomping on wood), so it sticks out like a sore thumb. Also, the white-faced monk was actually a stronger opponent if we have 'wood', so we were clearly not on the right path the first time. Crane may be the right one, but we don't know until we receive some sort of offer from a king.

So, all these hint at 2 things:

a) We still need to meet the king somehow (without being intercepted by traitor Pantu).
b) Because the word 'to' fits in so perfectly after 'turn', we were probably on the right track too after we left the monastery.

So in general, I think we visited almost all the right places last time, just that we didn't make the right choices between the individual sequences (like going the wrong way in the dream sequence and missing the clay bowl).

Therefore, I vote to follow the same way we took last time until we get the codeword 'to' again.

So, go north again and locate the mercenaries.

Heading northwards and following the same path that he took in his previous life until he received the word “to” on his Adventure Sheet received 3 votes, so Xu Shiyou will do that.

Xu Shiyou heads northwards by turning to paragraph 295, where he spots the sea. He does not have the word “to” on his Adventure Sheet, so he turns to paragraph 264. It is there that he finds the camp of the mercenaries, and he decides to creep up close and remain hidden by going to paragraph 134. He sees a group of farmers bring driven to the camp, so he decides to help them by proceeding to paragraph 270. When he approaches the encampment, he chooses to distract the mercenaries’ attention. At paragraph 100, he does not have the word “magic” written on his Adventure Sheet, so he rolls 2 dice, which yielded a 6. Since that is less than Xu Shiyou’s Skill, he will proceed to paragraph 312.

After setting free the mercenaries’ horses and lighting one of their tents on fire. Xu Shiyou frees the farmers and runs into a Mercenary, who he fights to escape from the camp.

After resting, he goes to paragraph 131 and decides to travel back south, in search of something or someone to help him in his quest for revenge. At paragraph 273 he receives the word “to” on his Adventure Sheet. Since he has a red robe, he turns to paragraph 129 where he meets the bearded man. He is now faced with the choice either to launch a surprise attack on him or show him respect and follow him warily.

The sacred sword still looks important, and it re-directed us on the journey to the king's capital, so I'm still inclined to follow the same options, follow him respectfully and tell him the truth to gain the side quest.

Showing him respect, following him warily, and telling him the truth of his quest to seek his father’s murderer got 3 votes, so Xu Shiyou will do all of that.

Xu Shiyou shows the old man respect and follows him warily to paragraph 50, where he arrives at a small hut and proceeds to paragraph 150 to listen to the old man. The old man introduces himself as Yao and asks Xu Shiyou to state his purpose for being there. Xu Shiyou replies that he is seeking the murderer of his father and goes to paragraph 39. Yao gives him the Golden Sword and asks him to take it to a young fellow called Suiyan. After spending the night with Master Yao, Xu Shiyou heads to Traole by going to paragraph 235. Once there, he begins his enquiries by proceeding to paragraph 375. It is there that he learns of the politically charged atmosphere and decides to put his trust in someone in order to find the rebels.

Rolling the dice to Test his luck yielded a 9, which means that Xu Shiyou is Unlucky and heads to paragraph 108.

You hear a young man in a tavern cursing the rulers of the isles. As he leaves the tavern, you sidle up to him and broach the subject of the rebels. He stares at you with eyes bleary from drink, and takes a swing at you.

At paragraph 24, Xu Shiyou talks to an old barber and arranges a meeting with the rebels inside a deserted building full of machinery. Xu Shiyou then goes to paragraph 290 and meets a crowd whose members chant “Down with the tyrant!”. He now faces the choice to either leave the building before the storm breaks or join in the chanting.

Votes registered, Xu Shiyou will use the Golden Sword, answer “198” to the puzzler’s riddle, and make a diversion to seek out the Hachiman warriors.

At paragraph 37, Xu Shiyou witnesses the young fellow called Suiyan getting cut down by the Dragon Guards. With the Golden Sword as the rallying point, the revolutionaries fight back and drive out the Dragon Guards. After their leader tells Xu Shiyou to carry the sword to the capital, he proceeds to paragraph 99. After visiting his village, he continues south past Yenshu. At paragraph 166, he encounters a puzzler and provides “198” as the answer to the puzzler’s riddle. This causes Xu Shiyou to go to paragraph 275 and the puzzler to be surprised at his confident answer. Xu Shiyou resumes his journey and adds 1 year to his Age and 1 point to his Permanent STAMINA. Upon hearing about the band of warriors from Hachiman, Xu Shiyou decides to make a diversion to seek out the warriors.

From a sheltered spot in a copse you survey a small band of well-armoured warriors as they make their way along the highway.
