Re: D&D Movie
The graveyard scene was like it was ripped directly from many of my sessions. Overall solid movie, and I'd go see more.

Re: What's your favorite kind of high level "friendly" NPC?
If I'm going to do a DM-Penis character, I usually have them doing background stuff, or if they are doing something in the adventure, it still includes the PC's in some way. Maybe they're holding off a powerful threat that showed up, while the PC's handle the rabble, or the NPC needs the PC's to gu...

Re: How to Implement Save or Dies in a Balanced D&D System
At this point, why not give let player characters and boss monsters either auto-succeed on a saving throw or nullify a critical hit through expending a meta resource? Like some kind of... fate point. But if they spend that and still fuck up, then they should just die. Sometimes players make mistake...

Re: What's your favorite kind of high level "friendly" NPC?
I wouldn't be upset with a high level NPC that takes the Zordon route. Hes probably a badass of some sort, but hes also trapped in a glass tube, and can really only scry, dispense plot/knowledge, and give you giant mechs. He was a great warrior back in the day, but now he needs 5 teenagers with atti...

Re: Why are Tome Feats a problem?
In my experience, getting booed out of the room at my home group for trying to use them and similar (tome items)... They aren't popular because many groups have different levels of player investment in the game. Tome feats are "A lot". RAW 3e lets the player who wants a complex elaborate p...

Re: 6th edition / One D&D
Auto-success on a 20 only matters in situations where the DC is so high that bonus+20 would still otherwise fail. Auto-fail on a 1 only matters in situations where the DC is so low that bonus+1 would still otherwise pass. Those strike me as situations where the GM should not be calling for a roll i...

Re: How to Implement Save or Dies in a Balanced D&D System
I'm curious if this is a PC only rule or if the occasional NPC or BBEG gets a save or two. There's still an issue of lost equipment, in some flavors of d&d losing equipment is as bad or really worse then dying. I've used it on allied NPCs who were killed in fluke or unexciting scenarios. I gues...

Re: How to Implement Save or Dies in a Balanced D&D System
Coming back a level lower, or with a point of con loss, or even with 1 less skill point or whatever sucks. My PC died, showing I'm a little too weak for the adventure the DM designed. Now I get to try again, only weaker. Or, since I'm playing a game and no one wants to tell me to drive home right no...

Re: Discord Server for discussing D&D 3.5 and Stuff that's compatible with it like Tome and Pathfinder
Solid reasoning. Discord is fucking worthless for anything, especially what this forum is for. Therefore, the idea that some folks set up a discord will end this forum.Discord is fucking worthless for anything, especially long-form RPG discussion that the Den specializes in.

Re: Watch Ghostbusters: Afterlife
I'm a big star wars fan, and liked episode 9. I also don't care about online Star Wars arguments (preferring online RPG arguments). Ep 9 could have been better, but I'd take it over the prequels (which I still enjoyed). I would have liked them to do more with Finn and Rose both. Rey being Palpatine'...

Re: Mixing & Matching Resource Systems
If there's a variety of debuffs and combat tactics that can't be applied more than once per instance (a Stunned foe can't be "Super Stunned", a Prone foe can't be Tripped into the substrata) an attacker would very well mix up their strike types to adapt. I was hoping you'd read into that ...

Re: Handling Modern Sensibilities in a Western RPG
I am all about a western RPG, and my immediate thought is you've got some diametrically opposed goals and you need to be very specific on what you're looking for. Movie west vs actual west is a good start, but unfortunately movie west is just as, if not more, racist than actual west. Actual cowboys ...

They claim its all written, and that the PDFs will ship when the kickstarter ends (Their email claims a previous one shipped in literal seconds). As someone who followed the project, I didn't see anything about an upcoming kickstarter, just an announcement it was live. It could be coincidence, or it...

Re: Wizards informally announces 5.5 edition
Trying to monetize a TTRPG that way seems incredibly stupid. I didn't say it was smart. I said its what I suspect they will do. They have been trying since 3e to get something going. DND Minis had 3.5 monster stat cards included for the DM, 4e sold power cards and a subscription based character bui...

Re: Wizards informally announces 5.5 edition
Agreed on overdue. You can see that they have a lot of changes they would like to make, but haven't in the name of compatibility. Things like no racial +2 to str, and instead letting everyone assign +2 to one, and +1 to another, or subclasses that are the same as a core subclass only better. My assu...

Re: Matrix RPG?
I think SR4 would do a good job. Most of the matrix effects can be repaired with accept powers, and the system is ok at modeling a modern self otherwise. This was my first thought. Any reason you wouldn't use SR4? No one plays a troll, and casting only works in The Matrix. Restrict spell options he...

Re: Victorian Vampire RPG thingy (WIP)
guns that don't kill vampires are still very useful in a vampire setting. Presumably there will be conflict with things that aren't vampires, and being able to kill them quickly from a distance is a big win, if lethal combat is a goal. There are a couple of options folks usually use for vampires. 1 ...

More intuitive rules, perhaps? Things that don't require extrapolation or 45 minutes of arguing and citing books to conclude? 5e rules debates can't be solved by referencing rules. They are vague and contradictory. Running 5e, we argued about rules for 45 minutes, and then couldn't solve them. We j...

the pathfinder version was like the the worst parts of pathfinder X10. Its gigantic piles of fiddly bullshit you can wade through and maybe find a diamond. I played a spheres pathfinder game and almost quit during char-gen because I just didn't care.

If you kill the Atropal at the end, CR 13, Acerack himself shows up all pissed off, CR 23... Alternatively, you can just finish the adventure the same way you finished the original, except this time instead of 70 goats, it's 70 hireling archers, which can probably kill him just like they can kill a...

I'm working on a 5e AP that I intend to sell for like $5 a pop. I am 95% done writing it, and plan to run it once myself with my regular play group. I may be able to convince some friend-DMs to do the same and give me feedback. I assume I'll then have to rewrite at least 75% because of unintended ga...

Re: Complaining about 5e Adventure Paths
Sure, I imagine its very common for AP writers. To play through a 40 hour adventure module, you need to actually sit down and play 40 hours of DND with 3-5 players. I can forgive that in a small press, or indie shop. In Washington state, assuming they pay minimum wage, and have 4 people (DM and 3 pl...
