I very much like the idea of levels + tiered powers as described by K; seems like a natural way to chart progression in a story to me. (Pardon the contentless me-too post... I'm a little drnka, as it were.)

Elennsar - the arguments that have been presented make exactly the assumption of independence that you describe; instead of arguing, why not try to make it work for you? If I were in your shoes, I would go about it this way: - First, decide on the relevant time scale for defining "lethality.&qu...

And it would be guesswork whether or not that model has any possible relationship to what will actually happen. More accurately speaking, the question is how well that model comes to approximating reality. If you honestly have no idea about the likelihood of someone drinking the wine, then a unifor...

Does good game design require that the designer is a polymath? Does it, at the very least, require that reality-modeling tasks are delegated to actual real-world experts? Should game models be derived from reasonable physical models (which aids in consistency with what players expect and with other...

And I don't have the first idea how many people will. Again, you have just described a uniform probability distribution - a perfectly legitimate probability distribution which is used all the time in statistics, often for situations where a person is unable or unwilling to posit a more informative ...

In the case of the wine, I don't know what would be a good number - if I had an idea, I'd submit, but I don't. Perhaps this would all make more sense if you didn't think about the probabilities involved as single numbers/frequencies, but thought about the issue in terms of a probability distributio...

In other words, if you *act* like a glass cannon, you'll basically become one... I like that.

Speaking of CAN, I liked the concept quite a lot (apart from the name - I really liked "combat advantage score" much better). As far as resource management goes, I have to admit I *hate* the idea of the whole "Winds of Fate" thing; it sounds like a variation on the old d&d &q...

I know I'm very much a minority, but I always like the randomness of the occasional SoD effect... getting hit with a death effect brought some amazing tension to the table (especially SoD-type poisons from 2E - I loved those fights). I've read people's reasoning for getting rid of them, and I think ...

Should powers be the primary determinant of class powers/skills? Given the other thread on the importance of roles, it seems to me that power source is not the only thing that should define a character's/class's ability set. Personally, I would kind of like to see a system that defines abilities usi...

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Kill the "cleric" as a class and any spellcaster can take a feat or just flat-out SAY they're the servant of a god. Hell, nonspellcasters could be priests as well. IIRC, that's the way Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved handled priests/clerics. I thought it worked pretty well.

Hi! Been lurking here a while, but the recent threads about roles and classes seem especially interesting, and made me want to participate.... I also prefer a simpler set of powers, but a set that includes non-magical sources of power; IMHO, *every* class should have one or more explicitly associate...
