Also: since when not having a full complement of abilities required to do everything that needs doing in the game on every fucking character is a problem? As far as I'm aware, even Tomes don't give fighty types abilities to planeshift, breathe in water or whatever. PCs are supposed to work as parties for a reason, both IC and OOC. The problem with fighters is not their inability to cast Water Breathing or Plane Shift or buffs. Their problem is not contributing enough to winning battles, to make hauling them around and buffing them (instead of buffing themselves or simply killing things) crucial for spellcasters. Unlike, say, AD&D 2, fighters simply don't offer anything unique to the party.

Which part are you disputing, that you use those terms, or the rest of us find you annoying? The first is demonstrably true, and I can go find the threads where you do so if you like. The second is, from what I've seen, also true. I know I find you both annoying and useless, so much so that I pretty much stopped reading the forum for the better part of 2 years.

If you are disputing that it is only you who uses those terms, that's probably fair, but it's a tiny minority, and all of them are assholes.

I'm not sure which thread to post this in, so I'll try here.

Pathfinder nerfed the spiked chain. It no longer has reach. Anyone surprised?

Well, I'm surely not. Also, if they thought that spiked chains (as depicted in 3.X illustrations) are frikkin stupid, they should have removed them. But, alas, this change was likely driven by their idea of "balance".

Balance of +1 Wizards -1 Fighters?

*cries tears of joy for people like FatR for getting the fucking point*

Frank: You have been seconded only by Kaelik in your lack of evidence for attacking my argument. I don't even get why you don't see how what I'm talking about would work considering a perfect example of what I'm talking about is in the Tomes you wrote. (2 Barbarian antimagic tricks being a bit of a step away from what I'm talking about) Though you gave me your graphs they didn't make any sense in the context of my argument and you yourself claimed that they worked on DIFFERENT PARAMETERS than the ones I was working on. So here's a breakdown on what you've been saying so far: Fighters can't have nice things, fighters can't have nice things, magi>everything else, If you work on these parameters then what you're doing can't work, I'm going to ignore you. Thank you Frank for doing nothing.

Parthenon: I still don't disagree with you that a character needs certain things when they level up to even face challenges. However me and you are not playing the same game. You are talking about times when a crucial mechanic (IE magic items) are being withheld or are otherwise unavailable to characters. Your cases is a special cases and that is not what I'm aiming this at. Now I do admit that non magical characters require more magic then casters. To balance this I take into account that most of a physical character's gold is spent on enhancing weapons and armor which grow exponentially in cost and tacking on enhancement bonuses. My idea is to make it so that they deal enough damage and have enough defensive capability WITHOUT the enhancements and weapons/armor that they have enough gold to buy utility items for covering their weakness.

Moreover on your first point it can be argued that if that is so, and a wizard can make its own items at a fraction of the cost, they will themselves always be overpowered. This is a given but moving on, on the other hand the fighter (RAW) can never be overpowered because it is too weak to begin with. So fighters having access to every magic item in the game won't make it over powered (or even as good) as a caster at least as it stands now. Your point here seems to be against magic items. I don't and have yet to encounter any REAL problems with having magic items. The only limit I have ever seen fit to give them is that higher level items (limit now placed at 15,000 because of the Tomes) are harder to find. But that is a different discussion altogether.

Your third point I have to take on a case by case basis. It is unlikely in any given combat that someone sunders a carried object. However I have made sunder happy bad guys before so I can understand how it might present a problem. However in the wasted time that any given enemy takes to sunder they're magic crap (which I could only imagine they'd do by having intimate knowledge of the PC and what his stuff does) that bad guy will be dead and the PC can simply then leave and go claim another or have the party caster impart flying on them.

Plot: If its Plot working against the PC then the DM at the table should have a point for grounding them and they're lack of whatever item has gone missing SHOULD be resolved within the plot.

Misadventure: Losing an item by misadventure happens too rarely for me to give any credence. I have never had a case where a PC fucked up and lost an item somehow. If they do they should suffer under the punishment of their stupidity. If it was DM engineered then see what I said about plot.

Idiocy: I can only assume you mean something along the lines of what happened in misadventure. So see it for my feelings about this.

As for the rest this is another point I don't really disagree with you on. Any given character should have the ability to somehow try and do A, B, and C. The difference between are thinking (and probably my thinking with every one else here) is that using magic items as a wizard uses magic is a totally acceptable way for them to tackle A B and C. They may not do A and B as well as someone who is geared towards doing it but they can make the attempt given the right gear.

Draco: I'm not going to give anyone credit in the now for things they've done in the past good or bad. Barring posters like Ubernoob and Parthenon no one else has come up with a good reason to argue against what I've laid out here. Most that do blatantly ignore part or sometimes most of what I put (IE Frank and Kaelik).

-Spiked Chain: With the way they've nerfed tripping it seems like a moot point to nerf the spiked chain now. The only reason they did it was because its one of the shining weapons of over use so of course to keep up with their balance theory they are going to knock it down a peg.

It's particularly dumb considering that they've added similar "reach+" weapons like the bladed scarf (seriously?) and the urumi in the past.

Balance of nerfing all the well-known popular tricks then giving every class (except druids and maybe clerics) a heap of extra bonuses. Without giving much consideration to how strong classes are relatively to each other. The end result is +1 Wizards -1 Fighters, because Wizards have quite a lot of fallback tricks that are almost as good (and because their main schtick - spellcasting - is so much more powerful than fighers' schtick - stabbing people - to begin with, so every class bonus that is actually synergistic with their trick grants wizards so much more bang for their buck), while Fighters have very few (archery, and that's about it).

Mguy, this has gone on long enough without being addressed. Like a poor craftsman blames his tools, a poor orator blames his audience. The breakdown in communication never lies with the audience. If they're not getting it, then you are not explaining yourself well enough.

That said, in regards to your proposals I believe that you are putting too much of the fighter's ability to contribute outside of the player's ability to control, and specifically into the DMs hands. As a fighter player, I do not want to have to rely on the DM allowing me to acquire or retain a pair of flying boots, teleporting cloak, or any of that other stuff. Nor do I want to have to rely on the monsters displaying a profound ignorance of the world to survive.

I do want to be able to say that my 10 levels of fighter mean that I get to hold my breath indefinitely and at will; that I can perform a ranged attack with anything I can throw that will force a flying enemy to the ground; or that my sword skills allow me to sever an opening between worlds so I can march into the Ethereal plane and whip the shit out of the ghosts that are harassing me. None of those things require me to participate in an elaborate "Mother, may I" game with the DM. Spellcasters can ignore or subvert many DM nerfs unless the DM is willing to go into raging cock mode, in which case you know enough to leave the game. Fighters should be able to do the same.

I do explain myself. I'm just not willing to post and re post the three main points I made 2 or 3 posts ago. I have quoted and re quoted myself again and again. A number of people catch on to what I'm saying and it just ends up being a fundamental disagreement in the way things should be done. IE I think that letting a fighter get some magic items to cover things he can't automatically do is fine as long as his core stuff makes him awesome enough to handle himself. At some point I'd have to assume that people are purposefully ignoring parts of what I say to make their arguments sound better (a'la Frank)

The DM would have to be in raging cock mode to not let you buy items. If shopping is depending on the DM too much how then does the wizard make his items? How does he acquire new spells for his book? How does the druid get certain items here and there to make his wild shape more awesome?

I don't think that the game should somehow separate DM and player input. Its not like you're playing a different game than each other. I don't think that saying "I'm going to buy this sword" is any different than saying "I'm going to attack this creature". You get gold to spend you get attacks to hurt things and BOTH rely on the DM saying ok.

Now I have to repeat this point because a lot of people seem to think I'm saying the fighter RAW is ok so let me highlight this point:

I think that letting a fighter get some magic items to cover things he can't automatically do is fine as long as his core (and by this I mean class) stuff makes him awesome enough to handle himself.

So you agree that Frank's "Races of War" fighter is a failure because it doesn't do any of those things?

If the original argument is not getting through, copypasta is not the answer. Try rewriting or rephrasing things.
The DM would have to be in raging cock mode to not let you buy items. If shopping is depending on the DM too much how then does the wizard make his items? How does he acquire new spells for his book? How does the druid get certain items here and there to make his wild shape more awesome?
The wizard doesn't strictly need items. Any limit on items disproportionately punishes the fighter in relation to the wizard. As far as spells go, the wizard gets 2 spells with each level up. Clerics and Druids get every spell they can potentially cast anyway. Druid wildshape would require nore nerfing than is feasible to make it useless and, even if you did, they could still rely on their 20 level caster progression.
I don't think that saying "I'm going to buy this sword" is any different than saying "I'm going to attack this creature". You get gold to spend you get attacks to hurt things and BOTH rely on the DM saying ok.
How do you not see a difference here? You could very reasonably not buy a sword if there are no swords to be bought. How exactly does a DM say, "you can't attack this guy" without being a douchebag?
Now I have to repeat this point because a lot of people seem to think I'm saying the fighter RAW is ok so let me highlight this point:

I think that letting a fighter get some magic items to cover things he can't automatically do is fine as long as his core (and by this I mean class) stuff makes him awesome enough to handle himself.
I think we understand this. We are disagreeing with you on the particulars of magic item requirements.

As long as the class doesn't overly require me to adhere to, or allows me to subvert, the whims of the DM, I don't much care what the particular powers or effects are.

I thought it was a remarkably clear answer, given that I am not familar enough with the RoW classes to speak directly to them. However, I'll try and rephrase:

Whether or not the RoW fighter allows me to specifically do the things I mentioned in my example (ground flying monsters, tear holes in the ethereal, etc), as long as it allows me to function in the game, without forcing me to rely on the DM's generosity and in spite of his potential stinginess, then I am fine with it.

Right then. So what do you stick in his class abilities to make him 'awesome enough to handle himself?'

And how do you differentiate it so he isn't just <Sword>Magic Guy?

Is anyone here arguing against that?

Where is the "fighters have to have wings and breathe underwater" shit coming from?

You haven't taken a look at the Tomes? My mistake I was under the impression that you like many of the other people who disagree so strongly with me had and were ok with it. Well no... No the Tome Fighter can't do that. So let me approach your post in a different way.

In my opinion any DM who bans all magic items is participating in douche baggery. Secondly if they do so without similarly and equally handicapping the casting classes then that person is actively increasing the gap already present between casters and non casters and I am not going to make a concessions in my argument/ideas for that because that is not the game I'm playing.

I was no longer gaming regularly by the time I'd discovered the Tomes. While I've read them in the past, I've had no opportunity or need to implement them or become super familiar with the entirety of the content. Truth be told, I read them more for the essays on undeath, morality, and the like, and less for the particulars on class writeups. My thinking was that the former information I could use to influence any game I participated in, whereas the class information required a game that explicitly allowed Tomes material.

My overall argument against your position is stemming from the idea that fighters should be elevated to perform as well as spellcasters in a "nearly-nude" setting, given only the barest of equipment requirements. Needing to have "a weapon" is fine. Needing the Flying Heavy Flail of Murdoch the Mad is unacceptable.

@hogarth--Fighters needing wings and waterbreathing is stemming from the idea that they need to be able to deal with obstacles like dragons, chasms, and sahaguin without begging for potions and magic items from wizards and/or the DM like Tiny Tim. Literal wings and gills aren't necessary.

Yeah, they didn't write them in. They did however fix the combat classes so they can actually afford to pick up a few trinkets to do such things. IIRC, there's actually a paragraph that says something like "And really, every fighter should have an artifact sword that lets him fly and shoot people in the face by level 10. Otherwise, they don't compete."

But yeah, the Tomes help. A lot. It's not a perfect fix, but it's a huge step forward. That said, several classes *do* get such things (like true fiend and fiendish brute).

Then really we have no argument UN. I like what the Tomes have done and I just want to make my own version of that. Think of it as me making my own Tomes classes.True Fiend and Fiendish Brute are two classes with a supernatural bent (in that they involve fienddom) and are therefore not a concern when I speak on fighter abilities.

Does that sound like gibberish or is it gibberish? I am not an native speaker but...
I remember you saying fighter cant have nice things (noting supernatural like fly, even if there are Ex fly monsters [beholder floats on gases])
He says, if fighter (not only the class fighter, but the role) cant have nice things they are earlier or latter not functional. So give them nice things or dont bother with the class.

Does that sound strange or not?
So what are the caster classes supposed to do, with their wealth by level?
The fighter classes took a huge amount of gold to get on par with the caster classes. What did the caster classes with the same amount of gold? Buy booze and whores?
To balance this I take into account that most of a physical character's gold is spent on enhancing weapons and armor which grow exponentially in cost and tacking on enhancement bonuses. My idea is to make it so that they deal enough damage and have enough defensive capability WITHOUT the enhancements and weapons/armor that they have enough gold to buy utility items for covering their weakness.

Yeah, weapons are expensive as hell, but even if you give that for free. The fighter classes still have more holes in their defenses to patch.

So here's a breakdown on what you've been saying so far: Fighters can't have nice things, fighters can't have nice things, magi>everything else, If you work on these parameters then what you're doing can't work, I'm going to ignore you. Thank you Frank for doing nothing.
3) umm I AM giving them nice things. The argument there is what constitutes what is nice and what doesn't
Who definies what the special cases are? But lets ignore that for the moment.
4) So ignoring wealth by level and limiting what isn't limited by the rules does not count as a special case?
Now I do admit that non magical characters require more magic then casters.
Does that sound strange or not?
So what are the caster classes supposed to do, with their wealth by level?
The fighter classes took a huge amount of gold to get on par with the caster classes. What did the caster classes with the same amount of gold? Buy booze and whores?
5) Well part of my point is to give them enough abilities that their primary gold drain (enhancement bonuses to physical stats, bigger and bigger swords, better and better armor, etc) will be covered so they can focus on utility items (flying, energy immunity, teleporting, etc). Another part is to actually nerf casters so that they too will need to pull their magical wallets out to cover any new holes.

And the caster classes can do the same.
6) Indeed and since hopefully after a few changes they won't have to blow an exponentially increasing amount of gold on minor boosts they'll have MUCH more gold to cover their ass with.
Man your posts are hard to follow...
Maybe if you used the quote function (and not the whole post, only the part your are replying to), I would read you post regulary...
7) Hopefully this will help you out a bit.
Can you post your point in one or two sentences?
At the moment your point is lost in a wall of text.
8) I will try to use less words.

Think of it as me making my own Tomes classes.True Fiend and Fiendish Brute are two classes with a supernatural bent (in that they involve fienddom) and are therefore not a concern when I speak on fighter abilities.
Here's the thing...
RoW fighter is the strongest noncaster class in all of the tomes and the WotC books. There's not a damn [non full caster] class stronger than it in head to head combat. At all. As such, a fighter can far more easily afford to use his 8 item budget on some flying wings or boots of teleportation than say, the barbarian that needs it for his magic axe to keep up with fighter damage.

Frankly, I'm not sure that even my incantagish would be stronger than an equal level Tome fighter. The class seriously kicks that much ass. Fuck, ranged combat? He already had PBS, uses his floating feat for Sniper, and just full attacks any enemy to death in two rounds (using blitz and power attack to further boost damage).

Seriously, there aren't a whole lot of enemies that a Tome fighter can't beat by just reaching for his spiked chain/throwing axes/greatbow/alchemist's fire. Tome fighter is the strongest fucking class in the entire tome.
