Still dodging all questions you can't answer, Shadzar? Let me quote it for you, so you can't pretend You don't know what I mean.
Kaelik wrote:Monsters have an AC, Fighters have a THAC300.
Then you go:
To compute, you have to add 13 to the monster AC, then add 12, then add 11, then add 10, then double, then add 9, then double, then add 8, then double, then divide by 2, then subtract 8, then divide by 2, then subtract 9, then divide by two, then subtract 46, then compare that number to 300, and use the comparison to determine if what the fighter rolled hits.

Now. Is this system better, equal to, or worse than the THAC0 used in 2e? If you accept that it is worse than, why is that so?

Oh, and by the way, so far you are stating the rules are fine, then don't follow those rules, you can explain neither the rules you pretend to follow, nor the ones you make up on the spot, you think being an asshole DM adds anything to the game, misquote, lie and insult so you don't have to admit you are wrong and are fighting for worse rules for the sake of sneering down at newbies.

That is quite impressive for a single thread. Right now I can't recall of anyone with a similar record and that includes Elennsar and spambots.

Hey you, fucking idiot. Guess what, your bullshit doesn't fly here.

I know you are used to attempting to infuriate people with bullshit lies and then reporting them to get them banned when they call you mean names, but as it turns out, we can totally fuck see through that bullshit.

1+1=2

2-1=1

These are both true.

But THAC0 is explicitly the idea that instead of adding 1+1 to get 2, or subtracting 2 from 1 to get 1, you should instead compare:

20-2+1=20-1.

There is no reason of any kind that this ever needs to happen.

Is it possible to use that formula? Yes. It is also possible to pick up a puppy from the pound just to put it down yourself. Is it superior to a more simple formula? No. Is it objectively inferior to either of the above formulas for use in an actual game? Yes.

No one at all has any difficulty doing the math of THAC0.

It just so happens that unlike you, we are smart enough to see that:

7+3 =10, not 4. And we don't want our game lying to us by claiming that it is adding, when it is subtracting.

We totally know what it means, we can absolutely do math.

THERE IS NO FUCKING REASON AT ALL FOR ADDED COMPLEXITY JUST FOR COMPLEXITY.

1+1=2.
1+1+20=2+20.

But if you seriously suggest that everyone add 20 to each side of the equation for every single time they compute it with no exceptions, then you are just fucking retarded.

Reasonable.
I am so sorry some of you people just cannot comprehend 2nd grade math. Maybe you should seek a place to discuss where to better education for future generations.

If you had any grasp beyond 2nd grade, then maybe you would comprehend algebra, which would allow you to work the formula around so that you can understand THAC0.

Since you are obviously mentally handicapped, I cannot fault you for your disability. Maybe someone can help you learn subtraction at a local center.

When you finally grasp subtraction, then feel free to come back and discuss things. Then I will be happy to explain the algebra to you once you have grasped the more simple mathematics functions. You won't even have to do any math with the algebra. You can plug in the numbers AFTER you have solved the formula. ;)

I have been using THAC0 for many years, and understand it fully. You own lack of understanding of it and clearly many other things, is the reason the bastard PO update came about called 3rd edition, and now why 4th edition exists.

Maybe your kind should stick with simpler games like Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land, or the new Sponge Bob board game. They don't have subtraction, just addition so you should feel right at home.

Nobody here has trouble understanding THAC0. We have trouble understanding the logic behind it.

Tell me: Why add, keep and defend so agressively such an unnecessary part in the game? At the moment, its only purpose is to inflate your own ego as new players get confused learning the game. Continue that way, and you'll manage to fuck over earth's gravity center.

I'm sure you're trying to draw some line between the ENworld thread and this one, but it totally went over my head. All I'm getting is disturbing mental images of your apparently transvestite grandfather/mother. So do me a favor and dumb it down.

Ah, now that I'm rested and awake, I see clearly where I was coming from. All that BS about 'you must be incapable of 2nd grade math' and 'THAC0 is simple and if you can't understand it you are mentally handicapped' are where I got the elitist vibes there shad. Having a complex system for no other reason than to be able to lord your expertise over the uninitiated irritates the fuck out of me. So have fun with that, good sir.

Well I just searched the 7 issues of The Strategic Review, as well the first 252 issues of Dragon Magazine and saw not a single question about why use THAC0....

So you want the logic behind it? I can only give you my interpretation since Gary and Dave have passed and only have my own intellect and knowledge of many games to base the reasoning behind. So it will be subjective.

Red Box set:
To swing at the monster, you must make a Hit Roll. Roll the twenty-sided die. If you roll an 11 or less, your character misses the goblin. If you roll a 12 or higher, you hit!
Seems like an easy system for Basic (Mentzer set).

Why did it change?

Rules Cyclopedia:
An attack roll is a number representing how easy or difficult it is for your character to hit other targets.
In combat, when your character is trying to hit another character, you roll 1d20; this is known as his attack roll. (In some game supplements, it's also called the "hit roll," "to-hit roll," or "roll to hit.") Once you know the number you've rolled on the die, you add any bonuses your character gets from high ability scores, magical weapons, or other factors. You'll compare that final result to the number required to hit the armor class of your character's opponent. If you reach or exceed that number, your character has successfully hit his opponent.
But how do you find out what number you need to hit a certain armor class? That's simple enough: We provide it to you on handy tables. Take a look at the Attack Rolls Table on page 106.
This is a few years after 1st editoin and collects all the D&D rules together, but it uses tables to tell whether you hit. Still not that hard, compare two numbers and roll >= the number shown where the row and column meets.

1st edition AD&D:
Your DM has matrices for each class of character by level groups, showing the scores required to hit the various sorts of armor and armor classifications. Normal men such as men-at-arms are always considered at level 0. Monsters are classed by their hit dice.
 The PHB doesn't tell how to attack? This is a new game so there must be a reason for it. Again RC was printed AFTER 1st edition AD&D. Guess the players just need to do what the DM says to attack and not have to worry about all those matrices. (Thank you Neo!)

DMG:
Using The Combat Tables:
Find the level of the attacker on the appropriate chart and matrix that with the armor class of the defender. The resulting number or greater must be rolled on a d20 for a successful hit. Penalties and bonuses may modify either the die roll or the number needed to hit, as long as one method is used consistently.
So it is the same for RC. Look up the attacker on the proper group (warrior, priest, thief, mage), and look over to the AC of the creature, and add modifiers and compare the modified die roll with the modified number listed on the table.

 Seems easy enough still.

That part I made red seems kind of interesting....

A consistent method to use these tables huh?

2nd edition AD&D:
Figuring the To-Hit Number
The first step in making an attack roll is to find the number needed to hit the target. Subtract the Armor Class of the target from the attacker's THAC0. (Remember that if the Armor Class is a negative number, you add it to the attacker's THAC0.) The character has to roll the resulting number, or higher, on 1d20 to hit the target.

Rath has reached 7th level as a fighter. His THAC0 is 14 (found on Table 53), meaning he needs to roll a 14 or better to hit a character or creature of Armor Class 0. In combat, Rath, attacking an orc wearing chainmail armor (AC 6), needs to roll an 8 (14-6=8) to hit the orc. An 8 or higher on 1d20 will hit the orc. If Rath hits, he rolls the appropriate dice (see Table 44) to determine how much damage he inflicts.

The example above is quite simple--in a typical AD&D game combat situation, THAC0 is modified by weapon bonuses, Strength bonuses, and the like (the next section "Modifiers to the Attack Roll," lists the specifics of these modifiers). Figure Strength and weapon modifiers, subtract the total from the base THAC0, and record this modified THAC0 with each weapon on the character sheet. Subtract the target's Armor Class from this modified THAC0 when determining the to-hit number.

Rath is still a 7th-level fighter. He has a Strength of 18/80 (which gives him a +2 bonus to his attack roll). He fights with a long sword +1. His THAC0 is 14, modified to 12 by his Strength and to 11 by his weapon. If attacking the orc from the earlier example, Rath would have to roll a 5 or higher on 1d20 in order to hit (11-6=5). Again, table 44 would tell him how much damage he inflicts with his weapon (this information should also be written on his character sheet).

The DM may also throw in situational modifiers, (for example, a bonus if the target is struck from behind, or a penalty if the target is crouching behind a boulder). If the final, modified die roll on 1d20 is equal to or greater than the number needed to hit the target, the attack succeeds. If the roll is lower than that needed, the attack fails.

Copied and pasted from its section from the AD&D Core Rules 2.0 Expansion CD-ROM with the copyright notice intact, same as below.
Calculating THAC0
To make an attack roll, the character's THAC0 must be known. This depends on the group and level, if the attacker is a player character or NPC, or the Hit Dice if the attacker is a monster or an animal. All 1st-level characters have THAC0s of 20, regardless of class.
For a character of level 1 through level 20, consult Table 53. This table lists the THAC0 number of each group through 20th level, so players don't have to perform any calculations.

For a character higher than 20th level, find the Improvement Rate for the character's group in Table 54. There you'll find the number of levels a character must advance to reduce his THAC0 by 1 (or more) points. Calculate the character's THAC0 according to his level.
The DMG contains the information on monster THAC0s.

Copyright 1999 TSR Inc.
Table 53 is the infamous table of groups with 20 different numbers.

So that consistent method must have been found. Condense all the attack matrices for the 4 groups, into a single line per group and call it THAC0, and then apply modifiers.

It saves space in the book, does the exact same thing. And makes for looking in the book when fighting to be unneeded since each player can have his own table on the sheet with wimple math.

To-Hit Armor Class 0.

Since zero is the mid-point of the armor classes, you just need to follow the formula when you level to get your new THACo, and the DM can always know what it takes for you to hit with a quick look rather than needing to look at the tables as well.

Bob the fighter is level 12.
That means his sheet says THAC0: 9

Bob doesn't know the monsters AC since it is his first time playing, and the bugbear he is fighting is known by the DM to have an AC 9.

9-9 = 0 Bob's player must roll in order to hit the bugbear.

REAL simple. Bob's player needs to roll a 1 (2 if using some 1=autofail).

THAC0-AC=number needed to hit.

Bob's player doesn't even have to worry about it, since he doesn't have the monster AC. So why should he bother? What if the DM created a monster NOT in the book? He can just make up the AC for it!

Having to NOT look up one of the attack matrix tables each time a PC, NPC, monster made an attack sped up the game by leaps and bounds.

The math is simple. THAC0 just gave you all the attack rolls for a PC type in a single line, and you only needed the one number to figure out what you could hit.

As above, the THAC0 of 9 means hitting an AC 0 monster (pretty damn good AC since nekked you are AC 10) takes a roll of 9 to hit. Weaker armor by one would be AC 1. (look up stuff on Dave to find out why...) Hitting weaker armor takes a lower roll, so 8 to hit AC 1.

THAC0-AC=to hit
9-1=8

Yup still works.

Hitting AC -1 which is stronger armor than AC 0....

THAC0-AC=to hit
9-(-1)= (two minus signs equal a plus sign my second grade teacher told me so...)
9+1=10

So you can build the line all the way across the 21 armor classes.

The DM only needs to compare your roll (adjusted with modifiers), to the adjusted AC of the monsters. Or the monsters attack roll, to the adjusted AC of YOU.

All AC's are already written down adjusted. So you just pull that number off the sheet, for flat-footed, with shield, no shield, etc. Monster ACs already include any bonus magic items IF they have them.

So the logic is a simple formula rather than 4 tables to have to look up all the time and flip back and forth in the DMG for.

If THAC0 was so bad, then why did they keep it for 3rd, but just stand AC on its head, and add 10 to all the THAC0's or something like that?

BAB just moves the formula around so you don't have to worry about converting two minus signs to a plus sign. Which for even the dumbest people I know is no big mental feat. And I mean dumbest by people that couldn't find this forum without a link to click on because they don't understand how to type in www.tgdmb.com and press the enter key.

THAC0's purpose is so you do not have to rewrite 2nd edition to conform to 3rd edition system.

It wasn't broken. It worked for everyone, but somehow people only started bitching about it when 3rd came out. Kind of like how people didn't have a problem with many things in 3rd until 4th came out and WotC said "3rd sucks!" and people decided to follow WotC and jump on their bandwagon.

WotC started the "THAC0 sucks" campaign, unless it came up in a Dragon under Paizo publishing that I don't have.

So what is the problem people really have with it? TOZ, never used it and didn't like it based on hearsay. Maybe others are the same way since the WotC campaign in order to promote 3rd edition to sell their new product? Because I NEVER heard a complaint about THAC0 prior to 3rd edition coming out. The ones I do here it from saying they don't like THAC0 are mostly people that never played prior to 3rd.

Something fishy there, is what I say, and why I am "defending" it.

There are hundreds of ways to use THAC0 to make an attack roll using the THAC0 system. You just have to pick a way and use that formula. One of those ways is the 3rd edition BAB system. It is just THAC0 standing on its head.

I used THAC0.

3e BAB is faster to explain since you don't need to explain all the hidden negatives (as Frank mentioned) and often faster in play (since you don't need to squint at the hidden negatives).

That's all. It's plain and clear as day.

People who have trouble with 3e AC and think it's slower are referring to other systemic problems like the stacking rules, which have nothing to do with the basic pattern and feat of the math.

I used THACO, too...I still remember those charts in the DMG. In grad school, I played with the other math majors in my department, and we had no trouble 'modifying' those charts when there was 2 point hop between one group of levels and the next (clerics at level 4 and 7, for example, assuming I recall correctly), and just giving the character a +1 to hit when he was at the level before the jump. Hrm, maybe that was AD&D, but sure seemed like 2E.

Back to the point, just no real advantage for all that, BaB is mathematically the same for all places where it should be, but simpler. Just like using any number of formulas over more complicated formulas that do the same thing.

@Doom, Tavish:

So how about you two. Did you start having a problem with THAC0 before or after 3rd and the d20 system came out?

Was THAC0 a problem like many people today want to claim, or is it more that many don't get it because they never played in a game with it, and just that the BAB method looks easier?

THAC0 only became a problem when and after something new came along?

I was making a joke about the stupid ass grandma rule on ENWorld.

I don't recall if you posted in that thread, but was saying that people within the last day were discussing the speed of character creation amongst the editions in it as well. You may be more familiar with it, since I only skim the latest posts in threads there.

What was the crux of the speed of character creation there, compared to what you (or as it someone else) said here?

Just what I said earlier on this thread: that a lot of grognards like rules-light systems because they can make ten minute characters. I've been arguing with a few of them because they got peeved after I made the mistake of not adding 'IMO' after commenting that OD&D is limited. And now I'm peeved because they seem to think I'm a 3tard, despite me saying that 4e is my fave editon because 3e is too rules-heavy. Assuming we're talking about the same thread, of course.

3e BAB is just faster. No more, no less.

That's it.

There's no real reason to engineer the THAC0 system.

It's even faster to say. Even a three word acronym is probably too much. Five?

As a guy who has trouble understanding the 3ed rules at times but has the masochistic tendency to DM, it feels very good to go, "Okay, this has an AC of 7. Roll higher then that to hit, please."

Noe, after some searching, I did finally wrap my head around THACO, kind of. THAC0 is still usable by some of the older dungeoneers and maybe with a bit of study I could master it but I'd still RATHER use 3ed's BAB.

@Tavish, would you use BAB for earlier editions, or stick with THAC0? Is THAC0 what prevent you form playing earlier editions now?

@GoA, so you never actually played with THAC0?

I think I am seeing a running trend finally with some of the honest answers here. Many people seem to be going on hearsay in regards to THAC0, that never even used it. That means it must have been part of 3rd edition marketing to get people to switch from 2nd and earlier editions. :ugone2far: So pathetic of WotC.

That's an irrelevant question. The question of whether THAC0 or BAB is better doesn't matter to yesterday's game design. It's like asking Genghis Khan to make his choice between an XBox or Wii. The actual answer is a roar and probably a sword through someone's skull. That, or him cheating at Civ games, I dunno.

It matters to tomorrow's game design. "Should I write the rules for THAC0 or BAB?" And honestly in a word-count-pressed book (that is, most gaming books), the BAB rules are going to be shorter. Note that I have not and will not go and actually compare the word count on the two rules in 2e AD&D and 3e D&D (or 4e D&D for that matter) because the authors in question could have added certain amounts of padding to the work that would conceivably alter the word count in question (such as secondary explanations and examples).

What's more important though, is that they're shorter because they're clearer, and because they're clearer your game is more playable, and because it's more playable more people will likely actually play it. Again, I frankly don't care how many newbies 2e AD&D actually pulled in versus 3e D&D, because other factors also influence. I just am asserting these as truths. If you don't want to accept them as true that's fine, it just means you're an idiot or a liar.

To SAY? It's one syllable (Bab) vs two (Thacko, rhymes with whacko). But to type, THAC0 is just dumb.

To use in a game it's counter-intuitive and wastes time. Also, Shad supports it so it can't possibly be a good thing.

I was thinking of "base attack bonus" versus "to hit armor class zero".

THAC0 has modifiers on both sides of the => sign that one person has to keep track of. One person should have to keep track of the modifiers on each side of the inequality period or else the game slows down. It's that simple.

Trying to wrap your head around THAC0 by reading the impassioned defenses of it by elitist fuckwits is kind of a waste of time. Here's how it works:
  • Your opponent has an Armor Class. It's their AC. Lower is better. All bonuses to their Armor class are subtracted from their AC (or multiplied by negative one and added, if you prefer).

You have a THAC0. It's your to-hit bonus. Lower is better. All bonuses to your to-hit are subtracted from your THAC0 (or multiplied by negative one and added, if you prefer).

You roll your attack die roll. Higher is better. Bonuses to your attack roll are added to this number.

Then you compare your attack roll to your THAC0 and their AC to see if you hit. It's just like 3e except that instead of having your to-hit bonus as a bonus and the AC as your DC, your own THAC0 is the DC and their AC is a bonus.
So basically it's just like 3e except that you multiply both your attack bonuses and their AC bonuses by negative 1 and then flip them both to the opposite sides of the equals sign - in effect multiplying them by negative one again.

And as you may have noticed, there are extra steps, because some bonuses are bonuses to your THAC0 (that are multiplied by negative one before being added), and some are bonuses to your to-hit roll (which are left positive and added). The sleight of hand is not intractably difficult, but there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to do it.

Tavish, who the fuck is talking about tomorrows game? Are you on drugs?

I am talking about playing 2nd edition, where THAC0 reigned. Who the fuck said anything about making a game now with THAC0? Why try to remake 2nd edition for the next generation of players. They are too stupid to understand it because it doesn't tell them every fuckign action to do and in what order.

I just asked is THAC0 a reason you would not play 2nd edition again, if you ever played it to begin with.

@uber: not really, one person CAN keep track of all of them or each side CAN work with their own.

Except the decision to get rid of THAC0 and make it one-way adding was made when designing 3rd Edition, and then again when designing 4th Edition. It was not made when designing 2nd edition because there was no design process for 2nd edition AD&D, aside from reprinting the rules of 1st edition with enough edits so it wasn't considered Gygax's work anymore, and frankly we can't ask Gary Gygax or David Arneson why it was the way it was earlier, so that line of pontificating is pointless.

There is no reason to ask about doing THAC0 in 2nd edition AD&D or not. Your opening question was "what is the real problem with THAC0". The answer is "it is not as fast/clear as BAB". That's it. Those subsystems are identical, except one is faster and clearer. Thus one got selected and the other didn't when 3rd Edition was designed. I am sure you can go and find something in 3rd Edition that is not as fast or clear as in 2nd Edition, but again I don't care, as there were generally other motivations creating those design decisions, and we're talking about BAB vs THAC0. We know the motivation for this one, and we can evaluate it by its own yardstick.

Shadzar, that's bullshit. Keeping track of bonuses to a roll and bonsuses to a target number is fucking easy because you only ever consult one at a time (your AC or your target number) so never fucking get confused. Not all players of D&D have IQs of >120. I tell you this from experience. There are seriously people I've gamed with that understood BAB and AC really easily but would never have understood THAC0 because it's more complicated for no reason. Before continuing this discussion, I'd appreciate it if you read up on what we're talking about:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/combatStatistics.htm

Note how in basically every possible instance it's one person comparing Attack Bonus+Roll (their math and only one calculation) to the opponent's static AC (one number). Basically no calculation aside from adding the dice roll to a usually static number every single time.

Once you've read up on that link, come back to us.

I don't need to read any d20 link to respond to someone saying that the person rolling the dice can't keep track of his own shit to attack, adn the DM keep up with his own.

That is bullshit.

The player makes the attack roll, and the DM figures if it hits. The player can add all his own bonuses for his lazy ass self.
