Pole

Post by Username17 »

OK, you've probably considered the possibilities. I don't honestly have strong opinions. OK, that's a lie. I have strong opinions about why literally thousands of options won't work. But there isn't an option I regard as best. They get named after the winner of this pole.

Short: they are demons who generally look like beautiful people. Their porcelain skin cracks when they are injured and their insides are full of ash rather than blood. They are generally really lonely and also work directly for the Efreeti. Appearances in popular media include just about every Succubus you care to name and also the human-esque demon subcommanders such as many of the Sailor Moon or Power Ranger villains.

Given the overlap between wannabe computer programmers and roleplayers, and given the google hits for "Gui", "Gui myth", "Gui folklore", "Gui monster" - I'm kinda thinking that's a poor choice.

Unless we are going for the metaphor - in which case we might as well just cut the subtlty call them Ballmerians or Gatespawn or the Seattle Seahawks
"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

I didn't know we had as many members as showed up for this poll.

I went with lokapala. I would have gone with Asura because it sounds right, but the things I associate that word with don't fit.

Ah, so I'm not the only one who was surprised.
Yeah, I prefer Asura myself, for really no other reason than that it "sounds" right to me. Evidently, I'm not alone in this.

You were surprised we had 24 members, or 24 regulars, or 24 "people who gave a shit"?

The latter, definitely. I mean, the discussion of this topic involved, like, five people, and we're already up to 28 votes.

Well, I didn't vote. It wouldn't rate my apathy or ignorance.

Can I vote against Gui, though? Too many Guis around, as is.

I'm not a big fan of Asuras being sexy demons.

Partly b/c "ASURA" is a special ability, where a 'monk' class in a game deals a pile of damage, usually enough to 1-shot an other player. Unless the other player is playing a 'knight'-type class (Knight or Paladin); or are wearing the right type of armour.

Seeing a super-ability be the name of a race seems odd from my persepective. It would be like naming a race "Power Attack for Max" in an other game.

Partly b/c I associate the word Asura, with angels. I think b/c they were introduced into the middle east as supernatural entities, and transmogrified into being sort of middle eastern supernatural 'beings' that had fire and magic powers.

I went with Lokapala; it's got a nice ring to it, and isn't too short either. Short race names seem to make a race less important for me.

All I can think of with ASURA is Roanoa Zorro's 9 sword deal. I'll go with Abiku because I don't hear it as much as the others.

Janni sounds sexier than Asura (and I know Janni would step on the toes of Efreet then), but given the other choices:

Obscure/confusing Gui
Abiku being spirits of dead pre-pubescent children per wikipedia
and Lokapala as runner up sound more like bound protectors than seduction experts.

I voted for Lokapala because I have no idea what any of those words mean (except for what I've read in this thread), so in my role of uneducated layman I chose the one I thought sounded coolest.

I'd like to fight that monster.

I too chose the one I thought sounded best, except I thought Asura sounded better. Also, I know a couple of guys to whom 4+ syllable worlds are anathema so Lokapala has a strike against it if I'm going to introduce them to aWoD.

Asura are angelic beings. However, they are not deva. They are "evil" angels, celestials of fire and destruction who stood against the Deva and desired power for themselves and yadda yadda yadda, you know the drill.

The "Asura" you refer to is actually "Asura Strike" (I see you, RO player)and any other ability named similarly should probably have been translated similarly, people just abbreviate it because they're lazy and it doesn't sound dumb to them like abbreviating "Dragon Fist" to "Dragon" would.

Ashura is the only one that sounds even remotely sexy. Still agree with Prak that Succubus is a fine name, and I think that Sidhe is a fine name too. But really, aren't these just NPC Daeva (which could just as well be named Asura)?

I was going to post this yesterday but I lost connection to TGD and didn’t get a chance to post. I vote for “none of the above.”

Seriously, after looking at the basic definitions for all those names none of them come even close to what you are describing. It’s like taking a moose and asking, “do you want to call it a sheep, a cow, or a horse.”

I vote Sidhe, if that's a hidden option. If not, I abstain. None of these names are particularly appealing.

Why not name them Lilin or Na'amah? Those are the names for feminine demonic forces in Jewish mythology that are the children of Lilith and spend most of their time seducing men, killing people, and kidnapping children. Or perhaps Qelippot, which means "husks" or "shells" in Hebrew and seems appropriate for a demonic creature with porcelain skin that is filled with ash?

They're special attack looks like this, in game:

Yes, giant letters fly over their head.

Next you'll be telling us that Ifrit is a dumb name because it's an attack in Final Fantasy, not a mythological creature.
