Pole Restart

Post by Username17 »

I... really hate how the poll questions work. The bottom part of the last pole got cut off, and in any case people wanted a None option. That's totally reasonable, so I'm restarting.

Short: they are demons who generally look like beautiful people. Their porcelain skin cracks when they are injured and their insides are full of ash rather than blood. They are generally really lonely and also work directly for the Efreeti. Appearances in popular media include just about every Succubus you care to name and also the human-esque demon subcommanders such as many of the Sailor Moon or Power Ranger villains.

Was torn between Vanir and Asura, but voted Asura.

These guys get onto the disambiguation page for Asura on Wikipedia.

The Guild Wars guys don't even get a footnote on the Asura page.

I'm going with Asura. Still.

The fact that it is also the name of an anime something is another reason to avoid the word.

Well fuck, there goes my plan to play any vampires, werewolves, or mages.

( I also find that intensely amusing coming from the guy calling himself Lao-tzu. )

The point of picking an unusual name is to avoid other associations I would assume, or frank would just call them succubi.

(Anime comes from japan; 老子 is a relatively well known Chinese philosopher. China != Japan.)

I don't think so. My impression of what Frank has said repeatedly that he wishes to draw on the associations that the names have, not avoid them. In other words, according to what I have parsed from him, the argument that "Asura" should be avoided because it will evoke the images of brooding, darkly beautiful bishounen/shoujo is... basically arguing that we shouldn't succeed. Obviously, Frank can correct me on this.

I think the reason to avoid succubus is entirely because it has associations that are undesirable due to being a D&D-ism. Also, it stops us from referring to the Daeva derogatorily as "succubi" who really deserve that name more anyways because they've got the Morrigan Aensland look going on for them (which is pretty standard for succubi).

And I know who Lao-tzu is. The fact that you're complaining about characters appearing with Sanskrit names in Nipponese entertainment titled using a French word still entertains me greatly.

I like Asura since they're somewhat related to Apsaras.

Also for me the name just onomatapoeically invokes images of smoldering beings which just seems to go with the ash-filled notion.

Just going with a quick google search (and considering ash as the opposite of energy) I would probably suggest more of a fallen Inari/Dakini but my knowledge of the languages of Japan/India is not enough to be able to take these deities and add a representation for fallen to them.

Inari, huh?

How about Azer, or Azar? I mean, if they're going to be associated with the Arabic Ifrit...
Asura or Aesir are fine too. Honestly, they could be called by any of those names. Calling them Vanir seems a bit backwards, unless you want to play of the whole 'enslaved by Ifrit' thing.

[Edit] Also: Mr Artair, would you mind putting the larger of your images (the villain from Soul Eater, I believe?) in a spoilerblock? I have a very small computer screen, and it makes reading rather difficult. [/Edit]

Yes, Inari (also Oinari) is the Japanese kami of fertility, rice, agriculture, foxes, industry and worldly success and one of the principal kami of Shinto. Represented as male, female, or androgynous, Inari is sometimes seen as a collective of three or five individual kami. Inari appears to have been worshipped since the founding of a shrine at Inari Mountain in 711 A.D., although some scholars believe that worship started in the late 5th century.

Inari has been depicted both as male and as female. The most popular representations of Inari, according to scholar Karen Ann Smyers, are a young female food goddess, an old man carrying rice, and an androgynous bodhisattva.

Check out This image (too big to use as an IMG without killing the thread.

Inari's female aspect is often identified or conflated with Dakiniten, a Buddhist deity who is a Japanese transformation of the Indian dakini, or with Benzaiten of the Seven Lucky Gods.

Asura's still fine, but now that Vanir is on the list I like that way more.
