However, it's a different story for the scenario that set you off, because at least one member of their party was literally as strong as a cloud giant; and I'm seriously disappointed in any story or adventure that expects a cloud giant to be stopped by a bricklayer.
I agree with this. It's sort of like how a chasm is a good plot device at low levels, but once you can fly, it's a minor nuisance at best.

I don't see it unmaking most adventures. It doesn't unmake Red Hand of Doom, or Demonweb Pits, or most Pathfinder adventure paths.

Sure it ruins World's Largest Dungeon and Tome of Horrors, but those are adventures that I can do without.

It seems to me like you just want to arbitrarily railroad and are upset that you can't do it with walls.

Interestingly enough, a cloud giant has a +20 to break checks. This means, taking 10, it will break down an iron door or even an iron wall as a standard action. Give the giant a couple tries, and it'll break down a 1' thick wall of masonry.

Magically treat any of this, though, and nothing's breaking it down in one action. You're required to have it be magically treated iron if you want to negate adamantine and truly slow down the demolition party.

D&D is a game about home invasion, cat burglary, and bunker assaults. If you aren't considering the walls, the floor, and the ceiling as an entrance point to wherever you are trying to get, you are half-assing it as an adventurer.

Does Silence work on the tremors created by tunneling, or does it only work on a narrow spectrum of audible sound?

The next time I see somebody trying to smash down a wall in 3.x I am going to ask them to tell me how their character identifies the load bearing members/portions so that he doesn't cause his whole team to heroically die in a self inflicted demolition accident.
Why not allow a knowledge: architecture and engineering check?

I'm going to agree that it's too easy to bust down walls, but I do think that's something that should happen.
