I was chopped out of my mother Julius Caesar style, because she had gestational diabetes and was in imminent danger of dying and taking me with her.

People who are in the process of giving birth are not the most rational people in the world, and having things happen that hurt or annoy them is something which very possibly has an entirely reasonable explanation. Yes, sutures without anesthetic is very painful, but anesthesia is something that has its own drawbacks - not the least that it usually takes a fair amount of time. Calling that sort of situation "rape" is insulting. It's insulting to doctors and it's insulting to rape victims. And since the Waambulance is a bit over used, I think we should call Steve Jobs for his response:

For Serious, I tore my mother so bad they started stitching her before I even came all the way out because if they didn't, she'd have been seriously deformed.

*Pretty sure I recall Glenn Beck talking about the Rape of the constitution by godless liberals or something else equally stupid.

My wife had an episiotomy against her prior wishes and was only informed of it after it had already happened. I was not in a position to second-guess the physician, but we both would have appreciated if he had said anything prior to actually doing it.

We had a premature, low birth weight baby (just barely on both accounts) who was coming out head first proper, but he still had to cut her, and she tore in the other direction anyway. And this was after she was on pitocin for almost 24 hours and had her water manually broken... on a complication free pregnancy not yet at 37 weeks. Maybe he had a golf game coming up and wanted her to hurry. I dunno. Oh, and the stitches he used afterward apparently didn't dissolve so they had to be removed many weeks later.

So.... we weren't really happy with our OB and are with another one for our second kid (due anytime now!). Even with our misgivings, I think that calling it birth rape is really shitty and demeans doctors, actual rape victims, and makes the people using that phrase look like a total idiot.

Reminds me of what happened to my mother and I. Her doctor forced my delivery 6-8 weeks prematurely because he was going on vacation. Seriously. I had a tonne of complications because of it.

I don't know about outside of Canada, but here doctors close ranks against outsiders. They and nurses hide wrongdoings and do whatever the fuck the want. Trying to get a butcher of a surgeon's license and shit revoked is fucking hard ; just look at some of the scandals in the last 10-20 years.

for my kid's birth, the doc came in for about 10 mins and didn't even stay for delivery. the nurse practitioner handle the birthing itself. Hell, we had earlier been asked if we want the Nurse practitioner or the doc. We had opted with the Doc over the NP. In the end, it wasn't a big issue for me and my wife. But I can see how it can be damaging.

Thinking about it, my wife was given painkillers long before her water broke, and she was told if she still felt pain, the epidural would be given. My wife still felt pain and she was given pitocin about 6 hours before labor and that just knocked her out. She still complains that she wasn't informed about the mixing of the two drugs or even what exactly pitocin in itself can do. All of the above can be an issue for a lot of people. However, my wife and I don't see it as much of an issue as we are fairly easy-going.

Its the same anywhere in every line of work, whistle blowing kills your career. Integrity is a fine virtue, as long as you keep it away from me and the dodgy stuff I'm doing that I need to keep hidden.
