You don't want to wield it one-handed, most of the time, but I suppose it's handy to have the option. Note that it already gives you a Shield bonus, and you don't need to wield it one-handed to use two-weapon fighting if for some reason you want to (armor spikes ftw!), so ... I don't actually know why you'd bother. Reduce your encumberance, maybe.
