I'm not sold on compulsory voting. It just tends to generate votes for parties that scream the loudest.

The real problem with the US system is that it's a two-party system. Which means that you're not allowed to push for gay marriage while at the same time pushing for budget cuts.

If we're gonna start talking about fixing the US political system though, probably best to start another thread.

I really enjoyed The Walking Dead on AMC last night. I'll definitely be watching this regularly.

The electoral voters for a state are its number of representatives plus its senators.

I think a big problem is people still think an individual state should be held up and allowed it make its own laws. The United States has a combined area right there with Europe. That's...a lot of ground. And fifty different states, which means fifty different tax laws, which leads to such stuff as most credit card companies crowding into Delaware because the taxes are most favorable to them.

And companies can freely sell across state lines but are only beholden to their own state (like Amazon is saying it doesn't have to pay the state of Texas back taxes to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars in a dispute about where Amazon is located; if there can be legal confusion about where a company is headquartered, something needs to be done).

This crazy tea party dude in the park the other week was claiming that "Nothing has changed since the Constitution was written!" and he wouldn't listen to examples such as...Internet, trade, huge expansion of territory, we went from thirteen states to fifty each allowed to make its own laws...

I think a case could be made for uniting the United States. If only to get the financial regulations and tax laws all on the same page.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

Probably less than not. The US focuses on 'getting out your base' and the enthusiasm gap, which means appealing to your own demographic and gives power to mobilisation and bussing operations.

In compulsory voting your own base is always going to vote for you, so it's about getting to the others.

I begin to understand why Sokka will never live down the cactus incident, and he hasn't even hallucinated a talking animal companion yet.

EDIT: From the same episode, Zuko and Iroh totally need a "You have no idea who you are fucking with" demotivator made.

I want to make a "You are fucked: Seriously Fucking Fucked" demot of the image where Aang accidentally drops his fire on the fire bending quest then makes Zuko drop his.
this one:

...of course it begs for so many various captions.

EDIT: this is disturbing on many levels:

You know, ordinarily characters giving themselves away by doing something stupid and self-indulgent makes me angry, but using firebending to heat his tea in Ba Sing Se is just so Iroh I can only laugh.

EDIT: you know, I'd have to say that what really sells every funny moment in Avatar is the look on other characters' faces.

I always have wondered if there was a feasible way to change the election procedure so that someone can win a major election without any sort of corporate sponsorship?

That always irked me that was such an integral part of the presidential elections, but I am unware of anything that could make it so that didn't happen.
In this moment, I am Ur-phoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my int score.

I'm having fun with this cute little geography game {OK, Flash, World, Cities, Crosshairs}. It gets pretty tough. Supposedly, there are ten levels, though my first time playing I only made it to level 8 (score: 11796).

Things I've learned from the game: I know nothing about cities in Australia.

There is a manga the title of which, when translated into English, is "My Balls."

Yes. According to TVTropes, it's "worth taking a look at." I'm sure it is.... I'm sure it is...

and actually, it sounds hilarious. Through some all too likely traumatizing accident involving an angel, an evil-can and pissing, perennial virgin Kohta gets a demon sealed in his left nut. If he ejaculates she will be freed, and reign destruction upon the world. The fate of the world rests on one virgin's ballsack.

That is amongst the things he tries. Demons show up at the doctor's office. Hijinx ensue.

By the way: I really find Zola to be an inane and non-credible villain in Girl Genius. I really think the story has gone way down hill since the big reveal that she is suddenly able to take on all the main characters at once despite having previously needed rescuing from giant snails.

All plausible, yet shitty explanations. The fact is that she was a joke character and a minor inconvenience when she had a small army with her, and now that she is all alone we are suddenly supposed to take her seriously against all the POV characters simultaneously. It just isn't dramatically interesting.

It would have been more believable if she had called in a completely new character. Simply upgrading a minor villain to a big bad in that situation was bad plot pacing.

It's definitely the feigned helplessness one. It was set up about six months ago rather explicitly.

EDIT: correction, in october of last year.

The first time I saw this it ended up making my vision go gray around the edges near the end, though I do have bad eyes.

I have the same issue with John Mayer. I can't stand the guy. Every time I see him or see a video of his all my Douchebag alarms fire off. I think it is just his body language or something, it makes me think, "Man, I hate this guy." But I inexplicably like some of his songs.

Anywho, onto the topic of webcomics. I am very pleased that it seems like several comics that I follow are finally coming to a head. OotS is starting to wrap up some long standing plot points. Erfworld is about to get another pivotal battle under way. And it looks like Goblins is going to have a battle as well. Maybe Fumbles is going to do something useful for once, like cast a spell. Grease + long drop could be a combat winner. I've taken down golems beyond my level that way.

One day, I promise, I will have a recorder on hand for when I crack up laughing as hard as I fucking can. I laughed until I wheezed and my chest ached at some of the stories here:

http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/

The Dog one, the Texas One, and the one at the top of the page all reduced me laughing until no sound came out. Read the Dog one before you read the front page story, though.

In the archives, there's also some good stories about roommates and apartments.

It's probably bad when you agree with the thinking of a character who lit probably twenty eight people on fire as a touching gift to his son, isn't it?

Y'know, it's a shame Mrs. Lovett didn't live in modern times... "The Worst Pies in London" could actually conceivably be a claim to fame that turned her shop into a tourist trap.

That and the grease and salt would do plenty to bring people in... Of course the health department might try to shut her down...
