They have no mouths either; so technically, they aren't sneering at anything.

Gileadite bows are amazing things. They outrange and outdamage pretty much anything in the game and show up on giants with full scale mail who can pretty much laugh off any return fire from any enemy in the game. A group of Gileadite Archers makes a strong rear to the army that can be augmented either with Amorites on hold + attack in the rear to intercept people slogging towards your archery ranks or can stand in front of a large number of indie shortbowmen. Since the Gileadite Archers are archers and larger and closer than the indies, they draw all fire, despite being almost impossible to kill with bows. The result is that you win archery duels, and if your Amorites can hold the line well enough to make it an Archery duel, you win.

It can be beaten of course, but not as simply as Bashanites, who lose to simple "this is a bunch of axemen" tactics.

Huh. I completely disregarded the archers because... well, to my eyes they looked like suck. Low accuracy, 1 map move, and 49 resources for a single bow.

Range 50. Damage 17.

Protection 17. 35 hit points.

They suck ass in close combat (even if they do hit for 23 fucking points of damage - Size 4 and Attack Skill 9 means that they lose to barbarian indies). But they win archery duels against pretty much any unit that has ever existed.

Turn 25 sent.

It's a pain when your enemy has an ally with mages with time on their hands ...

Man, until I started preparing for the invasion of Ermor I had no intrinsic grasp of how fucking much my armies and mages cost. I mean, I saw the numbers but didn't really internalize them.

On the bright side, Cthulhu moved in much the way that I'd hoped.

It looks like Ashdod learned about the 75% auto route this turn.

Eh, the militia ablated the lance charge. It probably worked out for the best, they'd have eventually overrun the giants.

I am disappoint. You lost to PD in one province, and your assassin failed to take out a totally random thaumataug?

I am disapoint that my PD 30 (entirely from random events) province failed to do any real damage though.

It was a totally random assassin who decided scripts are for pussies. I'd been expecting that, hence why I scripted him to charge after the first magic duel, in the vague hope of accomplishing something.

I will admit to no excuse for the PD bit. I think the 30PD province claimed about 20 lobo guards, but that might be another one.

So for someone in the know, do illithids count as 'archers' for scripting purposes?

I'm pretty sure they do.

They are actually pretty bad (sure they do a stack of damage but they never hit) but their damage absorbing capacity is unrivalled on a unit that comes in as an 'archer' for scripting purposes.

The stand one bowmen off to the side infront of a huge mass of indie archers tactic is pretty annoying.

I expect plenty of "luck" in that regard. Admittedly, not everything will likely go according to plan.
