Soul Binding at an appropriate level

Post by Ryan_Singer »

Thought I'd share a house rule I used back when I was running a game making heavy use of Frank and K's work.

Soul Bind is now a 5th level spell on the Sor/Wiz, Summoner and Cleric lists; and the material component is a gem worth 100GP.

This means that if you go out of your way and take a prestige class, you can get this ability a few levels early, but if you don't, everyone can bind bad guys at level 10. Seems to be the intent behind Frank and K's rules (certainly makes bribing bound efreeti easier, after all, pretty much the only way to get them to cast wish for you in the wish economy is to give them a CR >=6 soul).

you can actually soul bind stuff at a much earlier level than 9th, just by buying a Thinuan weapon (see complete warrior). Fighter types can really be effective soul binders.

The problem with that is thinuan weapons cost significantly more than 100GP. Any group that makes heavy use of thinuan should push the rogue into Thief Of Souls at 7th level (Rogue5/Wiz1/ToS1) to get soul bind as a spell-like ability.

I'm pretty sure that 7th level is the earliest you can put a soul into a 100GP gem in Frank and K's ruleset.

Yes, more than 100 gp but significantly less than 15,000 meaning you can get them in the wish economy. Also thinuan weapons can store a potentially infinite number of souls.

True, but in this situation, without a thief of souls to extract the soul out of the thinuan, you can run into problems like offering too many souls, asking the efreet to make change with souls when you summoned him naked, having to give up your better than 15k sword, etc.

Not that I would have a problem with a player wanting the efreet to just wish souls out of the sword and into gems.
