read the whole fucking books PHB and DMG cover to cover...then you will fidn you are wrong.

i wish i had the DMA on this computer so i could quote you where he says it, if the fucking forward/introduction to the DMG isnt enough for you.

introduction is where you learn HOW to use the "rules" you are about to read.

maybe people should fucking stop neglecting to read that, rather than jump into... oooooh flashy shiny classes, let me read them.

you might not miss shit if you actually read cover to cover.

read the Kuntz interview again.... Gary didnt want to make D&D, he wanted to make games, and D&D was just one of them. it just happened to get big quick, so they focused lots more effort on it.

look at ALL the games TSR put out and had a hand in.

Gary wanted to make another Parker Brothers or Milton Bradley...sadly in regards to game companies for the most part now...thanks to HASBRO

"You don't understand, Taco Bell was the only franchise to win the franchise wars, so now all restaurants are Taco Bell."

so i cannot counter quote from the 1e books right now as i dont have access to them, nor the Dragon Magainze Archive software, and im not searching through magazines old-school for a schmuck on a forum.

God...reading about Shadzar for extended periods is rather unbearably difficult.. Goes on unexciting rants, that are vague in the way they communicate that I wouldn't really be to know where to start, far as asking for clarity. If it weren't for the fact that everyone else on here spoke in more blunt, and clear manner, I'm not sure I'd be able to understand him at all. Make things worse, pretty sure he starts trying to fit his text to sound "similar" to everyone else, on the chance they'll agree with him on his own logic. Course then there's also the whole "elitism" he takes with it, thinking he's actually the reason for "change" among the RPG industry, get over yourself (shakes head). Top it all off, when people do ask him simple questions, or bring up topics be rather interesting of him to take, or even possibly prove flaw in what he says, just flat out ignore/make excuses about his personal situation or whatever. This I've seen him due beyond just this thread, so of course I guess one might sound "right" when you ignore most posts should probably respond, making conversation nigh useless on you anyway.

Really, I don't even give a flying hellhorse of a damn about the sheer fidelity of D&D's entire history and what it "meant man". Yes, it's a tabletop RPG, it retaining that is important obviously, but I rather just prefer a GOOD Fantasy game. One where one can run low-mid-high level Fantasy adventures with your Lancelot/leonidas/Robin hood, Jedi/wolverine/Lu-Bu's, to the Paul Bunyans/Dante's/Thor, all the way to mutter effin Kratos's/Mace Windu's/Asura's/Sentry, fighting Beholders, Slaads, dragons, Cthulhu, and whatever level appropriate challenges and adventures. Very least, an RPG where one can run mid-very high level kind of games anyway. Course, sad part is, if Shadzar doesn't ignore this, he'll probably quote single line, ignore the top, or hell actually quote it, but make up some personal excuse why not to comment on it.

2nd edition, AD&D or whatever, don't really need to run an RPG fueled on DM fiat/Magic Tea Party or MTP. Anyone can do that crap, hell probably been doing that for years in your childhood. People will already do "DM Fiat" crap in their D&D games, even if it's 3rd edition, Shadowrun, Spycraft, or whatever game feel to mention has "rules for everything". Which in fact, I'm starting to wonder, how so that 3rd edition has a rule for everything? been sad enough don't really see the distinction anymore methinks (shrugs). However, if a game is more Fiat than anything else, then it brings the question of why play those rules (especially if their execution is shoddy), and not just simply fuel 100% MTP, as hell, that crap is all free.
Stubbazubba wrote:I'm gonna make a prediction and say that the next time shadz logs on, he'll be here to say "you don't understand what D&D is about. Just because it rewards those things doesn't indicate that that's what it's about! You are just a young generation who grew up on Flintstones vitamins and MMOs where they tell you how to play the game, but in D&D you're not supposed to pursue the incentives because [insert non sequitur tangent here]...so stop being so lazy and ungrateful and stupid. Play the game, not the rules."
Yeah...that sounds about a rather spot on translation of how Shadzar talks.

The terrible shame is that I get the impression shadzar occasionally has insightful comments to make, but his posts are so incomprehensible that I can get nothing out of them.

Personally, until I get a clarification of "year zero exists" comment, this thread shall not fulfill its purpose.

As for the rest, I find it difficult to pinpoint "when did it all go wrong". Mainly because 2e was the first RPG I played as a kid, so I look at it through nostalgia-tainted glasses. Yeah, as a game, it sucked ass. But man, it was an RPG! Something completely new and this new RPG thing was the thing I really always wanted, without knowing it. Its hard to be objective about it.

And 3e rekindled my group's interest in D&D. For years preceeding 3e, we didn't want to even hear about playing it. 3e led to some great times, and great games, and I still feel warm and fuzzy when I read some materials I made for it. Hard to be objective about it as well.

What probably "ruined" D&D in my mind is the growing realization that RPG system should be built to support the specific type of story - and the fact that D&D simply did not emulate the type of story most people wanted, or expected. Before people actually realized the consequences of every D&D element taken to their logical conclusion, people were more than willing to hand-wave, ignore or ad-hoc add the elements they wanted to make it the support the kind of story they wanted.

When people started realizing that RPG should be designed to support the kind of story they want to play, it led to the attempt by the designers to add everything that the "majority" wanted. Somewhere along those lines, the line of "I'll make the game I want to play" got lost.

Or maybe I'm just rambling. The moment I opened 4e on a random page, and flipped through pages of similar-looking class powers, I thought how this crap doesn't inspire me one single bit. Some sort of magic that previous editions had was lost. Or maybe, it was just me growing old

not a realization per say, but a bastardation. people wanted D&D to support a specific style of play, because other RPGs focused on this. other RPGs that came about after had a specific style of play in mind as their goal.

i started with BD&D and AD&D 1st, but rarely got much out of 1st when having to read the books. due to Gary's prose, 1dst does have a flavor, but when second came out, it didnt need to have that flavor in the books, if you already used that flavor yourself.

like Kuntz said, D&D wasnt intended to support any style of play over another, but to allow people to choose. how to play for them selves. it gave you some wood, screws, screwdriver, hammer, nails, and saw; and you could build shelves, a table, a cabinet, whatever. it wasnt intended to be used for just one thing.

you could tell any kind of story with it, and alter it to suit the needs or your story, or playstyle.

another example of what D&D was made for, if the wood working tools above doesn't fit, think of a deck of playing cards. 13 ranks in 4 suits, but there is not une way only you can use them to play a "game", even if MANY of those games follow using full house, flush, straight, etc as part of their system.

i think the last 2 things you say is true, but wrong, and sort of confusing.

yes the designers stepped in to add things for the LCD, the masses, the majority; but did set out to "make the game i want to play" from the designer stand point, but that game was too narrow focused that it shut out MANY playstyles, and you end up with 4th edition.

you cannot make "everybody's game" by adding more stuff, but only by taking away the parts that everyone doesn't share.

discounting people that espouse "im playing D&D even though i only use WoD rules", cause that is just bullshit speak to appeal to popularity rather than explain to someone else what they are playing, then you need to make D&D in a way that everyone CAN play it, which was done originally.

you amke the backbone of a game, and let each group be able to adjust things as needed, but everyone using the same system then makes them "feel" connected through the hobby.

tournament format never worked and never will. sorry Frank M, that work went to waste. how to get people to play at cons and such idk, or maybe it is so simple, to have trained DMs, and the best ever written moduled, so that each DM running at the game wil come to the same conclusion should something come up during two different games at the con. so rather than rules made for a tournament like chess or monopoly, DMs that think so alike that the same actions result in the same results. or hell have varying DMs, so you get a different game with the same adventure, depending on the DM.

which was the point of D&D, so that people could play HOW they wanted, rather than forced to play Gary's game.

LFR, "tournament play", LGH, etc trying to get everyone to play the same way to have a "shared" global game is just silly and stupid in light of the games purpose...to let everyone play with a shared set of tools, but their own skills changes the game to suit their needs.

i will let everyone in on a secret now that may shock them; campaign settings never needed to exist, as that was something anybody could make. nobody needed to buy them. yet i own more campaign settings (4) than i do published adventures. because i took inspiration from them just as many others did from pieces of fiction, like novels; because they had a world that you could take ideas from.

you can play D&D on Discworld, but their was no Discworld D&D setting. it all boils down to where you pull YOR inspiration as to where the game is played.

so you weren't growing old, you jsut stepped back and looked at what the difference was in what you were doing all along, versus what the designers were doing, and noticed the goal of D&D and the goal of those making it had changed, and it had NOT gotten better for it.

the idiocy and stupidity that some people can come up with.

1. Henry Ford did not invent the car. he used Eli Whitney's interchangeable parts idea to mass-produce them.
2. he wasnt talking of the purpose of a car, he was talking about the production of HIS car. they only offered cars painted black.

more hyperbole and ridiculousness from the nut-jobs.....SOP for the den.

surely you dont mean to say that someone creating something new, doesnt know what they are making and the function it is for?

Henry Ford didnt create "cars", likewise Gary Gygax didnt create roleplaying.

Ford created Fords, and knew THEIR purpose.
Gygax created the TTRPG, and D&D, and knew its purpose.

the car was not made solely to transport people, but to let people transport themself and whatever they wished that would fit. Ford just made them quicker and the size he thought they should be.

roleplaying was made to let people interact with others in some way. D&D was made to meld miniature warfare with story and interaction of other roleplaying, to produce a game that would be the first TTRPG.

Ford knew why Fords were made, and Gary knew why D&D was made.

you mistaking Ford as the inventor of the car, when he neither invented the product or method he used to create it, is as futile as your mistaking of Gary creating the RPG.

so Ford making Ford card, gave him weight in deciding their form and function, and likewise Gary making* D&D, gave him weight in deciding their form and function.

again the function of the Ford was to be a certain form that Henry liked and thought he could sell and perform the task a car should for HIM, and so too did the function of D&D to the form and function Gary wanted from an RPG.

Many agreed with Ford, while others formed Chevrolet, General Motors, American Motor Company, Chrysler, etc....

MAny agreed with Gary, while others formed...whatever other companies there were then making RPGs, but i dont recall the names of them as was only focused on D&D at that age, rather than the industry as a whole. but the other companies names are moot, as the fact they came to exist, meant their was disagreement with what people wanted out of an RPG.

that disagreement was not on the level of rules exactly and definitively; but in many forms disagreement on the setting/genre/etc.

again you can own a screwdriver and do what you want with it, but that doesnt make YOUR use of it "gospel" for what it was made for, only what you CHOOSE to do with it. as such that was the function of D&D, to be a gaming screwdriver.

we can see people disagreeing easily enough on WotC forums where people are discussing the rules and their nature.

how YOU want the rules to be viewed, and how the game was made, are two very different things.

(see RAW v RAI)

Henry Ford thought trucks didn't matter, and wouldn't include them in his product line. You claim Gygax thought rules didn't matter, and didn't include them in his product line. You further claim that therefore, anything which uses rules is not D&D.

The same logic leads to you claiming that the F-150 "isn't really a Ford".

In each case, either you're using a definition for D&D/Ford which has no practical relevance, or you are just plain wrong.

care to try connecting the supposed claims to the individual posts, with commentary on HOW you think the posts by me, make those claims you attribute to them?

Well, it's a little hard to follow your claims. So, turn that around: explain what D&D is, and separately explain why it's originators' opinions on that topic matter.

hard to follow the two quotes you just claimed made specific claims?

Archmage, asked me to make a thread "what is D&D", but i have already said it over and over...

what more can i say? should i treat everyone here as a new player to one of my games or to D&D itself, and act as though they know NOTHING about it, and define it in my terms?

why its originator's opinion matter, is because they created the thing.

while Gygax created the TTRPG, he didnt create RPGs, just D&D. so his and Dave's stake in what it should do carry great weight, otherwise it isnt D&D, but just another (TT)RPG.

i dont mean with that descending AC form Dave defines D&D, but having AC in there itself DOES.

why so many people claim 4th isnt WORTHY of the name D&D, because it changes too much that it became something else, and should have, for the sake of understanding, given it a new name, rather than just be a scavenger living off the carcass as something else.

I said before if someone else wants to start a thread "what is D&D", then i will add my contribution to it. i just dont think i can really explain it anymore, if people refuse to listen.

Shad, is it the fact that 4E has the D&D brand name legally emblazoned on the cover of each of its products that bothers you?

If so, a complaint similar to yours is heard (Often it is me complaining!) every time a movie/TV show is re-made, but...neither you, nor I, nor any of the peasantry own the rights to the Dukes of Hazzard, the A-Team, Transformers, or, for that matter, Dungeons & Dragons, and therefore have no part in the decision making process as far as what happens to right now and/or going forward. Therefore, Han gets to shoot first and all we can do is suffer quietly or perhaps bitch to our friends, but...

(A) it is exceedingly unlikely to change anything, and
(B) the movie where Han shoots first is still legally called STAR WARS.

See, the people that own the legal rights to the name D&D get to make revisions (even ground up revisions) and then get to legally call their product D&D, and there is nothing you or I can do about it. Even if they aren't the original owners, Hasbro/WotC owns the legal rights to the product name, so anything they make really is Dungeons and Dragons whether we like it or not.

Game On,

i use the best "label" or naming example as i can. that thing floating in the pool in caddyshack...

if its inference was placed into a baby ruth wrapper, then it might be called a baby ruth, but it is really just a turd in a baby ruth wrapper.

yes they can call it what they want.. but Starbuch doesnt have tits and a vagina, and where the FUCK was Moffit?

likewise, calling 4th D&D doesnt, contrary to ol' Bill and James Wyatt and others at WotC, make all things prior that held the name D&D go away.

the copyright holder CAN put the name on anything they wish, GOD knows Lorraine Williams sure as fuck put D&D on everything form frisbees to cross-stitch kits...but that doesn't mean it IS D&D to the fans. Those fans DO have say in what something is named, as their reaction and acceptance or not, carries the entire weight of the product AND its name, least something else come out soon to replace the existing product yet again with the same name on it. (see 4th edition v Esentials)

Actually i ahve talked to Mearls a few tiems and changed some of HIS ideas about what D&D is/was, and inspired a few L&L articles...though not going in the direction always i had hoped, it DID get him thinking and reflecting on what it is he was doing as he was designing, and what he plans to do and have others do in the future design.

look at his statement form Gencon about the designers making the game for them, and having to let go of the reins in order to make the game for EVERYONE, not just a certain playstyle.

i forget the exact wording, but will go look up blogofholding and see if i can find the comment there.

so we CAN effect change in the way it is done, as the WotC forums exist, this forum exists (where people from MANY other forums go out and spread ideas), and there is a direct line of communication with WotC..well many "Rule of Three", telephone, email, snail mail, etc....

i never cared who shot first...the cantina scene was over for me pretty much after "and i dont like you either" ~SWOOVOOSH~

so while they can slap the name on anything they want, if they are not careful they will join the ranks of the below listed people sooner rather than later...

linae foster
scott rouse
mike lescault
ryan dancey
bill slavesik
shoe
jonathan tweet
randy beuller
dave noonan
erik mona
gary gygax
and countless other

WotC may have a bit of free control over D&D design, but with HASBRO putting CEOs in place to run it, they are controlling the bottom line, and if ANY part of the company fails to meet expectations or quota...then you know what happened to the above people....

amongst ourselves, it might not mean much, but we ALL still have a say and can affect the direction the game goes int he future, so dont count yourself out yet!

and with the exception of 4th edition, EVERYONE can legally make and sale material for ALL editions of D&D through compatibility to one of the OSR products, or directly with the OGL in the case of 3.x.

Play the game, not the rules.

And?

Gygax and Arneson created D&D, this is true enough. But creating something does not automatically grant you ultimate understanding of that thing. In the 37 years since, a lot has changed, and frankly a lot of it is for the better. Gygax held some really odd notions that were discarded by the rest of the hobby because they were bad. For example, Gygax liked traps that there was no way to detect and would kill PCs without any recourse. Read some old modules, he was seriously famous for that shit. And it's shit. It's bad DMing. And by all accounts Gygax held this position to the end of his days.

Seriously, being the originator of a thing doesn't make you the final arbitrator of all things having to do with it.
Don't bother trying to impress gamers. They're too busy trying to impress you to care.

So DnD is a popularity contest? Awesome. That makes this easy.

DnD means Pathfinder. It has the most fans, so it must be DnD.
