A two-party system might exacerbate things, but the fact is human argument was actually invented to bully people into doing what you want. Things like logic and science were a happy side-effect that came around much later. Which means every human on this message board (which I assume makes up the majority of the population) instinctively wants to defend their reputation in an argument more than they want to actually find out what's a good idea and what's not. As the emotional/societal stakes of the argument increase, the instinct grows stronger and harder to ignore.
Case in point, there's probably people trying to figure out which side of the line in the sand they want to stand on with regards to this issue, specifically. And that's the beginning of the end for reasonable debate.

I think Mauver meant "It's actually hard to get banned from tgd - you have to basically be a spambot, post that disgusting guro stuff, or be a repeated pain in the ass who deliberately breaks the rules." As opposed to just "You're annoying and I don't like your point of view. Fukken b&"

No, more like there have been bans here but very rarely. The only ones I can think of are Roy and that one poster that put up guro.Previn wrote:Wait... is this a subtle hint Shadzar is banned?fbmf wrote:...Mauver wrote:There's a good reason tgd doesn't hand out bans;

Just a heads up... Your post is pregnant... When you miss that many periods it's just a given.

The actual debate isn't what does it; that's only the seed for change. If there's a guy who says your version of a rickshaw doesn't have cupholders, and you refuse to fix it because your rickshaw is the Godly Vision you created and couldn't possibly be wrong, then he's going to go out and make a rickshaw with goddamn cupholders and potentially outsell you, which forces you to adapt.Chamomile wrote:A two-party system might exacerbate things, but the fact is human argument was actually invented to bully people into doing what you want. Innovation happens when you don't have what you want/need and no one will do it for you, even after a thorough belittling on the internet.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was a couple posters' MO.rasmuswagner wrote:Yeah. Troll the board with an ill-informed opinion, and someone will most likely post the detailed analasys you wanted in the first place, but couldn't be arsed to do yourself. FTW!

Isn't that actually what arguing is? You put forward an opinion and then someone lists hers with reasons why and you basically keep informing each other untill you either reach a consensus or get tired of swearing at each other?

I really wish people could say "Oh hai I am dumb and want help definining [X], please halp."
instead of saying "I HAVE THIS OPINION AND OTHER PEOPLE ARE STUPID" so as to goad people. Not having questions that aren't usually answered on this board already, I don't do it, but it just seems like a moderately more intelligent idea.

No. How it works is you bring a half-assed idea you don't want to analyze yourself to the forum and claim that it is awesome and perfect and anyone who disagrees is stupid. The entire rest of the forum will immediately rip the idea to shreds, providing the analysis you were after in the first place in the process. On the other hand, if you throw up an idea and say "not sure if this is good," most people will shrug their shoulders and say "me neither," because analyzing it takes time and effort that people don't want to put forth unless it gives them a chance to pretend they're smarter than someone else.ishy wrote:Isn't that actually what arguing is? Internet forums are kind of like internet pornography, you go on to jerk off. In the former, it is to jerk off to your own ideas and at the end of the day you really haven't accomplished much.
What makes the Den stand out... The Den is about the equivalent of an S&M fetish. The Den's favorite way of jerking it is to have hurr durr arguments that run on for dozens of pages. Some of it raise interesting points, but most of it is just slinging cum on the walls. Like strangulation to get an erection, being a huge [EDITED] gets you off even stronger. Occasionally Frank struts out in intimidating 12" stiletto thigh highs, a thick, fearsome whip (which is a situational weapon choice, by the way) taut in his firm grip, and you put on your gimp suits, anticipating the lashing of his sharp tongue with a perverse quiver.

Sooo... That Troglodyte photo in After Sundown. That's Frank, right? I got bored for five minutes and this happened:OgreBattle wrote:Occasionally Frank struts out in intimidating 12" stiletto thigh highs, a thick, fearsome whip (which is a situational weapon choice, by the way) taut in his firm grip, and you put on your gimp suits, anticipating the lashing of his sharp tongue with a perverse quiver.
Mostly not safe for work, or consumption by the human mind: http://tinypic.com/r/2h591ms/5
I would apologize for the general shittiness, but really, you should be grateful it's so shitty. You don't really want a convincing shop of this, do you?
I also apologize to Frank, everyone here, and myself. Really, this has been a shameful experience for everyone.
