My Little Pony in After Sundown

Post by Zeezy »

Ponies: Friendship is Supernatural
"And that's how Equestria was made."

Ponies are magical creatures from the land of Equestria. They are roughly the same size and shape as a shetland pony. Their fur and manes can be any color you might find in an average Crayola box. Everypony develops a "cutie mark" (something like a natural tattoo on their flanks) that represents their greatest talent during their childhood. A pony has the same average stats as a human and no natural weapons (their hooves work just like fists for weapons).

Pony Culture: In Equestria, pony culture is as varied as human culture. Some places may have one type of pony as an overwhelming majority (e.g. Canterlot is predominantly populated by unicorns), while others may have a roughly even mix among the types (e.g. Ponyville doesn't have any significant bias in population). Even so, towns will generally have their own customs and traditions, just as human civilization tends to.

In a normal After Sundown campaign, however, pony culture shifts a bit. Equestria has manticores, and other such creatures that would blatantly tell humans that they aren't alone. This begs the question why the Stellar Oracles haven't done anything about them yet, and the answer is simple: they're secret manticores. Very few people know they even exist except the ponies. So, by that logic, very few people know ponies exist. There are very few places we can put something and have them elude notice. Deep underground is one such place, and opens up a bunch of explanations for why entities like Celestia and the weather-manipulating pegasuses are necessary. You could also place them in the shallows of Maya if you wanted, although then you'd have to deal with people dreaming about candy-colored equines. This neatly wraps up the fact that ponies, which are blatantly supernatural creatures, share the same existence with humans and other supernaturals which have to abide by the Vow of Silence -- of course, you could fix that by simply playing ponies as humanoids like other supernaturals, which offers its own benefits (for instance, hands). No matter what, though, you'll have to come to grips with the fact that ponies have canonically encountered chimeras, kaiju, and other wild supernaturals regularly enough that they're more frightened than surprised when they encounter one.

Regardless of setting, ponies are generally easy-going, although they may be initially wary of outsiders. Still, they'll usually be first to offer the olive branch of peace, love, and/or tolerance.

It's worth noting that, even though only pegasuses have such a power in their basic package, most ponies have some power from the Symphony of Silence discipline in their repertoire, as they are prone to suddenly bursting into song.

Ponies suffer aggravated damage from iron and tend to lose their powers when exposed to alcohol. All ponies have a Lunar power schedule. Most ponies are dominated by Master Passion Greed, which explains the desire of many to spread their message of "love and tolerance" by any means necessary. A pony's cutie mark is largely unique, which lends itself to be a distinctive appearance that a pony wishing to act covertly must cover. Foals who have yet to earn a cutie mark instead have the Minor disadvantage. (This doesn't necessitate that a cutie mark is a right of passage into adulthood -- minors with a cutie mark do exist, and they get an advantage as normal for having both disadvantages, but every pony has at least one of the two.)

Speed: 150m (if played as quadrupedal equines)

Earth Ponies: The Hooves of Tolerance
"That's how you do it down here on the farm."

Earth ponies are the workhorses of the pony community. Where unicorns have more seemingly sorcerous abilities and pegasuses have flight and speed going for them, earth ponies are generally the strong-arms of their kind. They tend the fields and do most of the heavy work wherever they are prevalent.

An Earth Pony has an Astral power source and a Lunar power schedule.

Pegasus: The Wings of Love
"Loop-de-loop around, and WHAM!"

Pegasuses are the only ponies innately capable of flight, thanks to their wings and lighter frame. They lend themselves to great acrobatic feats, and many aren't opposed to showing off, as evidenced by the various flyer competitions held throughout Equestria.

Pegasuses are easily able to predict the weather, largely in part due to the fact that, in most provinces, they actually control the weather. They're able to physically interact with clouds, moving around large masses of cloud as readily as other ponies would push around a cart. They're also able to stand upon clouds as though it were solid ground. Sufficient force will permit them to burst through a cloud if they need to.

A Pegasus has an Orphic power source and a Lunar power schedule.

  • Tumultuous Rain (Advanced Chasing the Storm)

Distinctive Flaw: Either Minor or Distinctive Appearance
Unicorn: The Roots of Friendship
"A unicorn needs to be more than just muscle. A unicorn needs to have style."

Everypony in Equestria has some magic going for them. A pegasus's ability to walk on clouds is magic, as is an earth pony's predisposition to plants and animals (and their brutish strength could be considered 'magical' to some). Unicorn ponies, however, have much more conscious control over magic than their brethren.

Their horns offer intimate control over magic, as evidenced by the glow they emit whenever they actively concentrate on a power. (This is just flavor for already obvious powers, it doesn't make them stand out any more than they already do.) A unicorn's magical ability is restricted in part to the domain their cutie mark would suggest, although they may know a few tricks outside their specialty, and every unicorn has some measure of telekinesis.

A Unicorn has an Infernal power source and a Lunar power schedule.
  • Unicorn Starting Powers

    - Core Discipline: Discernment -
  • Aura Perception (Basic Discernment)
  • Supernatural Senses (Basic Discernment)

    - Basic Powers -

  • Deny the Gauntlet (Basic Progress of Glass)

  • Psychometry (Advanced Discernment)

The following post will include some sample characters, modeled after the main cast (and Applejack is here too). They all graduated from luminaries to supernaturals after Rainbow Dash's first sonic rainboom (so they start off using the In Media Res package). They gained an additional point of potency after purifying Night Mare Moon, and again after sealing away Discord. Somewhere along the line, they each gained a single Elder Power. This does contain sprinkled spoilers for the series, especially for the episode The Cutie Mark Chronicles.

(A note: These write-ups are largely unfinished, as I've mentioned. My plan was to progress them organically once I at least fleshed out their attributes, skills, backgrounds, and powers, but I'm rather hung up on the backgrounds for pretty much everyone save Twilight and Pinkie. The powers, at the moment, mainly serve as a shopping list more than a show of what they can actually do. I also noticed I haven't exactly optimized their skill choices to their disciplines. I'll have to work on that at some point. Top-down design is a pain in the ass sometimes.)

Applejack

Applejack was born and raised on the Sweet Apple Acres farm. As a filly, she yearned for a change of pace, and moved to Manehattan with some family members living there, Aunt and Uncle Orange. As the saying goes, however, you can take the pony out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the pony. She found city life to be far too alien to her, and after spotting a rainbow pointing back to Sweet Apple Acres, she raced back and has been living there ever since.

Powers: [Earth Pony] Bitter Fruit; Grass Rope; Vigor; Revive the Flesh; Tongue of Beasts; Curse of Failure; Frozen Note; Quickness; Nimble Feet; Devastation; Indomitability; Alacrity; Restoration; Force Field

Notes: Applejack is a hard character to think up resources for. Technically, she probably doesn't own Sweet Apple Acres, but being the only of-age Luminary/Supernatural, we can say she owns it for all intents and purposes which matter to us. A job obligation like she has would usually only be worth Duty 1, but I feel she takes her duties seriously enough to devote that much more effort into it. Honor ethics are, in a nutshell, "make a promise, keep a promise" taken to its logical extreme.

Pinkie Pie

Pinkie Pie was raised with her family on a rock farm, which was a dreadfully dreary and boring experience. Not much to talk about, really. She had to deal with the occasional parasprite, getting rid of them with a quick flute solo. One day, Rainbow Dash's sonic rainboom happened, which drew Pinkie's attention to a rainbow in the sky, which made her extremely happy! She was so happy, she threw a party for her family the next day in celebration of her newfound glee and in hopes that she can share her happiness, which turned out to be a smashing success. She eventually moved out to Ponyville, making a living as a baker at Sugar Cube Corner and a party arranger and caterer.

Resources: Finance 1 (Party paraphernalia), Finance 1 (Rented a room in Sugar Cube Corner),
Obligations: Duty 1 (Work at Sugar Cube Corner)

Master Passion: Loneliness
Driving Passion: Parties!
Ethical Taboo: Solidarity ethics
Honor: jokes, laughter, keeping a promise, having fun, social gatherings, harmless pranks
Despise: harmful pranks, wrecking a party, purposefully avoiding parties, breaking promises, hurting friends,

Advantages: Eidetic Memory
Disadvantages: Distinctive Appearance (cutie mark: a yellow balloon flanked by two blue balloons), Delusional (believes her Curse of Failure power is prophetic instead of problematic)

Powers: [Earth Pony] Bitter Fruit; Grass Rope; Vigor; Revive the Flesh; Tongue of Beasts; Curse of Failure; Missing Voice; Shadow Casting; Attract; Nimble Feet; Devastation; Indomitability; Cloak of Shadow; Shadow Walk

Notes: The Delusional disadvantage is poking fun at Pinkie Sense, which was a friend's idea. It was harder to come up with an Advantage to buy with it. I needed a good way to justify Pinkie instantly knowing about parasprites, so I thought I'd make them creatures of the Gloom, and acquaint Pinkie with rather intimate knowledge of the natives there (Rating 5 is a bit overkill for that purpose, but there you have it). And, yes, Pinkie does remember some skills from her time on the rock farm -- perhaps not enough to justify a rating 3 Background, but I was running out of ideas on backgrounds to give her. Pinkie could've had either Loneliness or Despair as a Master Passion, but Loneliness seems more apropos -- she seems to have severe problems validating her own existence. Likewise, Pinkie could have either Honor or Solidarity ethics. Both link into keeping friends, but in different ways. I went with Solidarity because, with her, keeping a promise is only incidental to keeping a friend, which is ultimately what she cares about.

Fluttershy

Fluttershy was picked on relentlessly as a filly due to her shyness and ineptitude at flying. One day, however, Rainbow Dash stood up for her to a pair of bullies, and was challenged to a race to show how tough she really was. As the race started, she was knocked off her cloud and down to the earth below, where a cloud of butterflies softened her descent. There, she found so many animals she was unfamiliar with, and instantly bonded with them. When Rainbow Dash executed her Sonic Rainboom, the animals scattered and hid. Fluttershy used her newfound skill to communicate with animals to put them at ease, and has been working with them in Ponyville ever since.

Social: Animal Ken 6 [+6] (Domestic Animals), Empathy 6 (Motivation Determination), Expression 6 (Music), Intimidation 6
Technical: Artisan 5 (Sewing), Electronics 4 (Repair), Medicine 6 (Veterinary)
Backgrounds: Local Fauna 6, Everfree Forest 4, Fillies' Songs 4, Ponyville Lore 3, Dragons 2, Cloudsdale Lore 2

Resources: Assets 1 (Her various pets), Finances 2 (Her home), Assets 3 (A manticore)
Obligations:

Master Passion: Fear (animals abandoning her, others hurting her friends)
Driving Passion: Helping animals
Ethical Taboo: Politeness ethics
Honor: humility, pets, caring for animals, cute things,
Despise: hurting her friends (physically or otherwise), mistreating animals, drawing attention to herself, rudeness, needlessly raucous behavior, scary things

Advantage: Calm Heart
Disadvantages: Distinctive Style (cutie mark: a trio of butterflies), Doomed Romance

Powers: [Pegasus] Howling Winds; Rising Mists; Vigor; Repel; Nimble Feet; Silent Toll; Tongue of Beasts; Hide From Notice; Suggestion; Flight; Tumultuous Rain; The Beckoning; Songs in the Dark

Notes: Fluttershy is obviously -- to me, at least -- ruled by Master Passion Fear, seeing how she's literally afraid of her own shadow. Her Frenzies usually consist of her trying too hard (and too violently) to be assertive, a la Best Night Ever. The Stare is best modeled using Suggestion, I find.

---

Rainbow Dash

Rainbow Dash was a very tomboyish filly. She always prided herself on her flight ability, both in speed and agility. One day, she saw a couple of bullies picking on some poor pony who couldn't fly terribly well, so she stood up to them, trying to defend her honor. She was challenged to a race, which she gladly accepted. As the race progressed, the contestants grew faster and faster. As she dove down to reach a checkpoint, she reached critical velocity for a sonic rainboom, leaving the one remaining flyer in her dust, and awakening several luminary fillies to their supernatural powers from the sheer awesomeness and power of the sonic rainboom. From there, she continued practicing her skills, eventually joining Ponyville's weather team as their fastest and most efficient member.

S: 4 [+1]; A: 6; I: 5; L: 1; W: 3; C: 1; Edge: 3; Potency: 3

Backgrounds: Aerial Stunts 6, Meteorology 5, Famous Pegasuses 4, Natural Flight Courses 4, Pegasus Races 4, Ponyville Lore 3, Cloudsdale Lore 3, Wonderbolts 2

Resources:
Obligations: Duty 1 (Help with Ponyville weather)

Master Passion: Loneliness
Driving Passion: Joining the Wonderbolts
Ethical Taboo: Solidarity ethics
Honor: loyalty to one's peers, showing off, competition, coolness, awesomeness, radicalness
Despise: pompous showboating, losing,

Advantages: Extremely Competitive, Loyal
Disadvantages: Distinctive Appearance (cutie mark: a cloud emitting a rainbow-colored lightning bolt), Distinctive Appearance (rainbow-colored mane and tail), Prideful

Powers: [Pegasus] Howling Winds; Rising Mists; Vigor; Repel; Nimble Feet; Silent Toll; Quickness; Revive the Flesh; Flight; Tumultuous Rain; Lightning Strike; Alacrity; Blur

Notes: Rainbow Dash is right there with Applejack for being hard to come up with resources for -- I don't even know much about where she lives, beyond it being made of clouds and near Ponyville somewhere. She needed the Loyal advantage, being the element of loyalty, and Extremely Competitive fit too well not to include it. I'm reluctant to give her another disadvantage just so she can have Fighting Finesse, so I'm letting luck of the draw handle that.

Rarity

Rarity worked as a costume designer from childhood, and yearned to be a fashionista. One day, while working on costumes for a play that was starting that night, her horn started glowing and literally dragged her along the ground, ultimately stopping at what seemed to be an ordinary rock. As Rarity was complaining, the sonic rainboom occurred, splitting the rock in half and revealing an obscenely large cache of gemstones. She discovered her special talent for dowsing for gems that day, which gave her an edge over other dressmakers for making flashy, gaudy dresses.

Resources: Finances 3 (Carousel Boutique), Secrets 3 (Gemstone dowsing ritual), Languages 2 (French, German),
Obligations: Stalkers 3 (Some enemy business)

- Motivations & Passions -
Master Passion: Greed
Driving Passion: Have her dresses accepted among the elite of high society
Ethical Taboo: Princess ethics
Honor: good fashion sense, elegance,
Despise: dirt, uncouth behavior, acting holier-than-thou,

Disadvantage: Distinctive Style (cutie mark: a set of three cyan diamonds)

Powers: [Unicorn] Aura Perception; Supernatural Senses; Vigor; Learn the Heart's Pain; Deny the Gauntlet; Attract; Compel Spirits; Missing Voice; Shadow Casting; Mesmerism; Command; Mask of a Thousand Faces; Gift of Health; Telekinesis; Psychometry; Mirror Pocket; Summons; Cloud Memory; Hide in Plain Sight; Mob Mind

Notes: I had a bit of trouble balancing out Rarity's physical attributes. I didn't want her to be as weak as Fluttershy, but at the same time, I wanted her to have a not-sucky Agility. I didn't really plan on Rarity having so many powers. When it comes time to actually draw cards for everypony, I don't think she'll actually end up with a lot of them, which is kind of sad, but likely for the best -- I may want to pare the list down anyway. It's also in character, her being the element of generosity and all.

Twilight Sparkle

As a filly, Twilight Sparkle was enrolled in a prestigious magic school as Princess Celestia's prized pupil, after she put on a most impressive (albeit destructive and haphazard) display of magic. Life for her mostly consisted of secluding herself from others with her pet baby dragon, Spike, focusing on her studies and becoming the best magic wielder she can be. In her studies, she came across the legend of the Mare in the Moon. As the thousandth Summer Sun Celebration since the exile drew near, Twilight became worried for the fate of the world. She sent a missive off to Celestia, who responded with a vague command to make friends in Ponyville. With this, she set off to her new home in Ponyville, which doubled as a smaller set of her personal library in Canterlot.

Background: Physics 6, Equestrian History 6, Biology 5, Mathematics 4, Canterlot Etiquette 4, Sorcerous Theory 4, Chemistry 2, Geology 2, Supernatural Myths 2

Resources: Asset 1 (Spike), Destiny 3 (Libraryful of sorcerous tomes), Finance 2 (The aforementioned library), Destiny 3 (Slightly larger libraryful of socrerous tomes), Science 2 (an underground lab), Contact 6 (Princess Celestia), Finance 1 (Hot air balloon)
Obligations: Duty 3 (Student to Princess Celestia), Enemies 6 (Ancient Evils of Equestria), Stalkers 1 (Trixie)

Master Passion: Greed (Achieving Goals)
Driving Passion: Fulfilling her duties to Princess Celestia
Ethical Taboo: Humility ethics
Honor: organization, being well-read, scientific study, impressive magic, attention to detail, punctuality
Despise: showboating, intellectual dishonesty, willful ignorance, disrespecting the princesses, believing in unreal things, abandoning a plan without good reason

Disadvantage: Distinctive Style (cutie mark: a six-pointed star surrounded by five smaller stars)

Powers: [Unicorn] Aura Perception; Supernatural Senses; Vigor; Learn the Heart's Pain; Deny the Gauntlet; Attract; Missing Voice; Enchanted Slumber; Howling Winds; Hand of Flame; Suggestion; Curse of Failure; Revive the Flesh; Mask of a Thousand Faces; Telekinesis; Psychometry; Realization; Cloud Memory; Purify the Mind; Restoration; Dreamstep

Notes: Twilight was actually the easiest pony to finish, but the hardest to justify. For Twilight to work as she exists in the show, she needs to have Dreamstep before she engages Night Mare Moon, and that was in the first fucking chronicle. An argument could be made for coaxing the MC into letting her use it just once during that scene (an argument I'm loathe to make), but other than that, it's really shaky. Spike as an asset is essentially a baby kaiju. If he's allowed to go in a Greed Frenzy for too long, he rapidly grows up to be as large as kaiju normally are, and gets all the toys that come with being a kaiju of his variety, including a Strength score of 35 and a few powers to bring home the fact that he's a dragon. Ending the Frenzy reverses his growth spurt.

Just pointing this out. It uses the Friendship Track to turn generosity, honesty, etc. into Magic Points which, among other things can be spent to use out-of-depth powers, so you might be able to solve the Dreamstep problem.

Actually, it works. Everything gets a power source, and the Infernal power source is for when you're in a horror movie that is more like Silent Hill or Carrie. The unicorns in FiM seem to be more ancient and magical than the others. The only thing I think I'd change in that is that I would make Earth Ponies Orphic and Pegasi Astral - although I can see the logic either way.

The part I have trouble accepting is fitting the ponies into the general Tradition of Silence of the modern-Earth After Sundown setting, and I myself would have opted to try to do the setting as a post-apocalyptic Earth that reverts to the ancient Tradition of Misdirection. It's not that hard to find support for the argument that Equestria is Earth after a chaos spirit finished making some changes to it within the show's canon.
"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

No, I doubt the Tradition of Misdirection is going to work in a society where humans can simply fire a shotgun in your general direction without caring about why you're a terrifying freak of nature, regardless of Discord's previous influence. The reason why it was abandoned in favor of the Vow of Silence was because humans figured out that a sufficiently large angry mob armed with fire and pointy things can overrun a supernatural horde. If the Vow of Silence isn't maintained, humanity will eventually manage to collaborate sufficiently to repel any supernatural threat. That's not going to change in a post-apocalyptic future unless we've somehow lost the ability to harness fire.

Even if ponies manage to get along well with humans, this may raise flags among the rest of the supernatural community. Some will be nonchalant, thinking it won't harm the rest of them so long as the humans don't go looking in the shadows for more oddities. Some will chide the ponies for breaking the Vow of Silence, hoping it will cause them to consider slipping back into the shadows. Others still will want to go around killing any 'visible' ponies to prevent any incidents from cropping up -- preferably furtively, because straight-up murder is going to cause more problems than it solves. Regardless, breaking the Vow of Silence so brazenly won't end well.

I understand your sentiment. I'd really like to have ponies be able to intermingle with humans. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening without abandoning the idea that the supernatural is something that humanity needs to fear. Either that, or we make them humanoid.
