If I find a Deck of Many things, I generally save it until I'm level 4+ and am on friendly turns with some goblins or something. Monstrous humanoids to whom life is cheap.

I was almost tempted to give it a shot this time, but Olaf wasn't planned to be that kind of gambler. He is paranoid and superstitious enough to be worrying about the consequences of staying near arbitrary reality-shaping magic.

Oh, I'm not complaining. This outcome is quite interesting, although I should have had Cadwyn take the time to buff before returning.

And this way I don't have to spend any time wondering what cards I would have drawn.

Sorry for the double post, but are there any special requirements for leveling up (rest, training, or the like)? Or should I just advance Cadwyn to level 2?

Advance, or pick a new class, whatever. No training times as long as you meet the prerequisites.

Holy shit, did Cadwyn draw the comet?

Yes, the Comet AND the Rogue, which is quite a brutal combination.

Ooh, yeah, that was brutal. Damn.
I'm guessing Archibald drew either Jester and Key, or the sun, for the seeming level up and the staff. Hmm... he has other new items too, though...

The deck isn't in the main room. You have to pull the lever to get to it. I edited my post for clarity.

I have to say, it's actually a lot of fun to be playing a fish out of water character. Helps exercise the "Player Knowledge isn't Character Knowledge" muscle.

Just making guesses at this point, but the lever set-up may be hooked up to a larger spinning platform. If each lever controls a direction of turning, the circular rotation could connect to 4 or more different rooms.

My second guess is that there's a turny lever and a non-turny lever, the non-turny lever activating a trap.

WELP, Aracanis' warranty was Voided. After drawing the Knight as his first card, and fighters are boring. So, new character.

Kothre was born to a human family in a large city, but grew up isolated, shunned by her peers, for any of a number of reasons, including her mismatched eyes (one a dull grey, the other a crimson red), and the markings which covered her limbs, neck and chest, like ancient, unreadable runes. She'd had these markings since birth, and no one could determine where they came from.
At 14, in a moment of stress caused her arms to become vast, leathery wings, and a gout of flame to shoot from her mouth, badly scarring a boy, and she was driven out, believed to harbour a demon. She found something approaching acceptance from a nearby clan of lizardfolk who helped her through the next two years, before she continued on her own way.

Swinging a magic weapon thats unidentified still provides its bonus to hit/damage and effects on hit, right?

Yes, since it's use-activated. Any command word/spell completion/etc. abilities won't be apparent, though.

How tight are you running encumbrance? Depending on the weight of this axe I think I'm going to be lightly encumbered unless I get rid of something.

I usually don't run it very tight unless someone is carrying around big sacks of coins. However, if you're concerned about it feel free to redistribute. The axe weighs 5 lbs.

That's nice. I prefer not to add up the weight of everything I'm carrying most of the time.

In other news, some major funhaving is going on in this game already. I had guessed at contact poison or some kind of possessor demon in the pit. No, we're going with something a little more classical.

Is this game open to any newcomers? I really like the quality of posts so far.

Sure, we haven't even gotten beyond the first room yet. Stat out a 1st-level character and tell me which books/sources you're using, and you can appear in room 00.

I might add Book of Fiends and/or Unholy Warrior's Handbook. Think I'll do an overly enthusiastic new Unholy Warrior.

And here he is, Chip Arxos.

Always, always stick a weapon in any suspicious holes...

Was Olaf really gone long enough to get a mile down this corridor or does it seem like there is some magic at work here? Also, what type of axe is the bronze axe?
