There were so many fucking things wrong with this, starting with the

Where gender is unknown, it is grammatically correct, appropriate, and prefered to default to male pronouns. So sayeth Strunk and White.
Strunk and White was composed by an old guy in 1959 based on the revised edition of a 1918 pamphlet written by another old guy who was so old he was already dead in 1959.

You'll excuse me for not taking it as the authoritative source on gender in language in 2012.

Most people use the male pronoun in absence of the specific anyway.

That said, despite the belief that "pain is good for women" and the fact that when they grow up their husband can beat the shit out of them, the religious crazy people tend to actually only be in favour of beating male children.

My only assumption for this is that it comes down to paedophilia or the "I must protect my daughter, everyone wants to have sex with her" thing. When it's stemming from religion, I err on the side of assuming paedophilia.

ALA.org Frequently Banned Books wrote:The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien

Burned in Alamagordo, NM (2001) outside Christ Community Church along with other Tolkien novels as satanic.
...Fundamentalist Christians really are dumb as a pile of dust, aren't they? That's right, *THE* Christian fantasy novel, written to be specifically allegorical for Christianity by a Christian author, is supposedly satanic.

Christians like to think they have critical thinking and reading comprehension skills. I'm sorry, but when you're too fucking stupid to see past "guy who can call lightning" and "magic items," and burn a book that actually supports your side, you cannot read for comprehension. Any criteria by which you would say Lord of the Rings is Satanic would also hold true for the Bible. It's like burning Alcoholics Anonymous material for advocating drinking.

I'm pretty sure it places third for "THE Christian fantasy novel", after:

1. The Bible (dohoho)
2. Chronicles of Narnia (in which Aslan seriously is God, complete with creating the world and sacrificing himself for someone else's stupidity and coming back, the White Witch is very much Satan, being the cunning tempter who is evil just because, and those who turn away are denied access to HappyLand despite all of their good deeds up to that point because "Fuck you".)

Because we totally need a d14 and d18, right?

I didn't even know about the d16. But I have to say, this very idea annoys me far more than it should. We're in an age where games are trying to limit the dice types used and we have digital dice rollers that will roll whatever you tell them to. And yet they want to make those things.

It's not even like this affects me: all games I play these days are via the Internet (see: digital dice rollers), and I can't be fucked learning new game systems so it doesn't matter if the next D&D uses them. But it still irritates me.

There is apparently a new RPG in the works called Tephra, which is d12 based- because d12s were previously relegated to a couple class hit dies, a handful of weapons, two creature types, and sex toys, and the game is steampunk and running d12 is the game system equivalent of "stick some cogs on it and call it steampunk (because of the 12 hour clock).

But, yeah, d14, d18, that's fucking dumb. There are d5s and d30s that never get used...

The d30 is used in that shitty car-racing board game. IIRC it has something like 16-30 twice or 21-30 three times or something.

Pokethulhu uses the d12, because it's a joke game.

I'm actually in full favour of d12s getting more use, because seriously the most use I've heard for them is some perverted deviant on the WotC or BG boards putting a bunch in a condom to make an anal sex toy for his girlfriend, and the die needs stuff to make up for that.

I'm happy for it to just not see any more use. The same goes for the d10, d8 and d4. I'm okay with stuff basically being reduced to d6 and d20.

I like dodecahedrons because they roll more randomly/smoothly than dice like d4, 8 and 10. I have a few d12 with 1-4 repeated on them to serve as d4s and I love them.

The d4 is the worst for smooth rolls, yeah. You pretty much have to cup them in your hands (two hands, so there's no escape but room to rattle) and rattle them about. Just about any other die you can simply pick up then flick your wrist or whatever. My time playing 40k taught me how to roll a bunch of d6 in a way that is random (so, not cheating) but doesn't slide and bounce across the battlefield.

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

Weird. It would seem that sort of theft would have had to happen over a long period of time.

So I wonder, why maple syrup, of all things? Opportunity? Is this the new Tide for drug dealers?

My only question is "why is there a global strategic maple syrup reserve in the first place?"

Are the Russians going to attack our maple syrup supply in the coming WWIII?

Ask her about America's plan to invade Canada and take all their natural resources.

America is zero for two in our attempted invasions of Canada, but most Canadians I've talked to seem to think we're going to try again someday.

It's called "War Plan Red", but the plan is to take out Canadian bases capable of hosting British planes, ships, and troops in the case that they take Britain's side in a new America vs. British Empire fight. It is considered a "highly unlikely" scenario, but the US military maintains a plan for war with every country, no matter how ridiculous that is. West Point students have to write about something.
