Found a solution for the Frank Cheat

Post by Maxus »

Seems like Frank's right about spells per day.

I just leafed through a friend's copy of Complete Mage and found this item, and just had to write it down.

Heward's Fortifying Bedroll
3,000 GP
Activation: Climb in it (1 move action), and spend 1 uninterrupted hour resting.
Effect: The bedroll grants you all the benefits of 8 hours of rest, including elimination of fatigue/exhaustion, natural healing, and the ability to prepare and ready arcane spells--over the course of a single hour. Spells cast within the last 8 hours still count against your limit as normal.

Am I reading this incorrectly, or does that all but say if you spend 8 hours' rest with no spellcasting, your spells get refreshed? And day/night actually boil down to your last 8-hour rest period?

If that's so, it means Frank's right. As per usual.
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

That's why I don't allow Complete Mage material in my games unless I playtest the hell out of it.

This item isn't so bad. He left out the rider on the next page, saying you can only be effected by this effect (so, regardless if you have multiple bedrolls) once every 48 hours. It just makes it harder for the DM to rape arcane spellcasters for trying to get their spells back.

Now, the metamagic grip, 2 entries later, on the other hand... Metamagic the hell out of wands (any feat you know) 3/day. At 6000 gold per grip. You can only apply one feat at a time, but there are all sorts of ways to abuse this.

As for Maxus' actual point... I'm not sure. The bolded crap is the same disclaimer thats in the basic resting rules, so it doesn't add much to the per rest cycle vs. per day issue. It actually makes the item kind of suck, unless you're using it as part of a normal sleep cycle.

If you adventure for 4 hours, cast your spells and then rest for an hour with the bag, you don't get shit back.

My main point is that bolded statement seems to imply that you prepare spells, use them, and as long as you don't cast anything and rest for 8 hours, you get them back. And that means that you can get more than one set of spells per day even without magic items to help you catch a power-nap, right?

Thats what I thought you meant. But the bolded bit doesn't necessarily mean that. Its just hearkening back to this, from the SRD:
Recent Casting Limit/Rest Interruptions

If a wizard has cast spells recently, the drain on her resources reduces her capacity to prepare new spells. When she prepares spells for the coming day, all the spells she has cast within the last 8 hours count against her daily limit.

This would be the 'limit as normal'
The real problem is that some people don't want 'daily' to actually mean... per day.
Of course, some times you're adventuring someplace (assorted planes), where daily has no functional meaning, so it has to mean per rest period. (or it means you don't ever recover spells when there isn't a daily cycle, which...)
Its just badly written, without regard to the circumstances that can come up.
