I'm rather curious to know what the "help" and/or "reward" mentioned are.

The PCs will have the option to walk away. It may lead to a tonal shift where I joke about the ghosts singing "don't leave me swinging in the wind until November", but it is certainly an option.

Failure probably means a level-appropriate encounter with undead.
Success gives you a treasure that helps discover the truth when it is being concealed and some undead backup if/when you fight the demon whose domain you are tracking through.

No undead encounter, no magical treasure. You put the ghosts out of their misery, so they still help you fight the demon that trapped them there.

So basically, the players have 4 options:

1. Walk away (no gain/loss)
2. Solve the riddle (get treasure/benefits)
3. Fail the riddle (get XP)
4. Knot-cut the riddle (get benefits)

I like it. Certainly a lot kinder than what I'd expect (some kind of creepy effect that puts the players in the noose if they mess up the riddle).

I've seen exactly one riddle done well. It was a game of chess...
