With my 6-year-old, it's pretty hard to have her not play a mage or someone with an animal companion. I've tried pushing a suped up ranger on her or something along those lines. But she's read most of the phb and she's single handedly found out that the druid is the class to be. Of course, I'm sure she probably picked up some of my talk about how awesome the druid is. But, I did find it amusing that when I (or Uncle Virgil) presented her with options, her constant picks have been, druid, pokemon master, star mage/green mage, half dragon. Of course, all of these have to be princess or faeries apparently.
Jess: if you weren't in Oregon, I would totally love to have a game with our kids in it.

That would be awesome, Arun. Alas, distance. I like that your daughter gravitated to druid cheese automatically. Amelia of course went for the monster PC route, as I mentioned in the OP.
I realize not all of you are on Facebook, so I'll reshare something from there. I was rewatching LotR with my daughter Amelia (just turned 4). Her aunt decided to join us, and at the part where Frodo and Sam watch the elf procession go by, she asks Amelia "If you could be in this world, what would you be?" Amelia answers "A DRAGON."
A while later, the Balrog shows itself, and Amelia stands up and yells "HOLY CRAP, LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!"
Proud papa.

I have to admit I've subjected my son to way more SciFi and super hero stuff than fantasy, so he's more apt to want to be a Jedi or a robot. (His current dream is to be a scientist, invent a robot, become a boxer, then join the army with his robot and kick butt... in that order. So... a mecha pilot.)

Speaking of rpgkids, is this similar to the old Fighting Fantasy books. Some of them used a simple opposed d6 mechanism.
If you can provide an example of a round or two, I would find it interesting.

Similar in its simplicity, but I don't recall FF using opposed rolls. Looking further, it seems that the newer FF books use opposed dicepools. Or something.

I think my kid picked the druid more for the same versatility that we've talking about rather than (maybe alongside?) just cheese.
She really dug the fact that she could have an animal friend, change shape and cast spells.
While playing a simplified rpg is good for a much younger audience (like Jigoku's 3-year old), I think once you step up a little, kids are able to differentiate between different sort of dice and the idea that each one serves a different purpose at different times. I was also surprised that the Tome game seemed to interest the two kids I had talked to rather than just plain d&d. Maybe this has to again do with the point that characters can just *do* more different things in tome rather than in 3.5.
I think one of the things that younger rpg settings need to focus on is to introduce the kids to a setting that isn't racially charged or that has more logic than idiocy.

Well, the Tomes are... colorful in their description of abilities. I hope to get a little bit of that in my material for COTEOTM.
And I do think your mention of "racially charged" settings is important. I've already worked on a couple of sidebar texts that talk about bringing up more mature ideas and implications. That's also one of the reasons I went with the Amazing Technicolor Population on the art I've done so far.

Like the characters in Doug.Cynic wrote:JigokuBosatsu wrote:Well, the Tomes are... colorful in their description of abilities.
That...pause is suspicious. What do you mean by colorful?
Colorful as in lots of crazy colors. Not sticking to human tones. Look at the link.
I took a little bit and mocked up some... alternative icons, to see what you think.

I'm sort of training myself to use the drawing tablet that's been sitting around here since... forever. So pardon the inconsistency.
I've fussed with a few more.

Yea I realized I was doing that when I was coloring the knight. Hence why I pulled back a bit. Using a rose-tinted goldish color instead of pink or something.Cynic wrote:I do like the fat there is a variety of colors for the girls. Differentiating thm by only "girly colors" should not be done. Let's break that stereotype. Good work though, CG
OTOH I think making something a little cutesy is acceptable.
JB, you should ask your daughter if she likes any of those. Or, more importantly, if she DOESN'T like them.
Stowe posted a test-run today.

The Barbarians are especially good. It's a great style. I was intentionally mimicking the early-Simpsons style that Enrique used. What kind of tablet do you have, BTW?
My daughter liked the Alchemist because of her hat, and the Explorer because she was a ninja.
Interesting playtest. I think the particular level of humor will work for the age group he's shooting for. Think I will stick with the 'dry' text for the MC and cutesy read-aloud portions for the kids. The Legend of Zelda health system is cool- that gave me an idea. Since rpgKids uses "wound levels", functionally, I thought maybe I could have little Doom-style portraits of the character at full health, one that's bandaged or whatever, and then one when they're knocked out.

I'm using a Graphire 3, precursor to the Bamboo basically.
My fiance has an Intuos 3, that she never uses, hooked up to her rig.
That playtest looks very promising, I hope his end product is reasonably priced.

Heh. I used to have a Wacom. I'm using a Monoprice right now, and for how super cheap it was, I'm amazed. If I had the dough to get a Cintiq (or the time to make my own) I would.
