Sorry, for a minute there, I thought we were quoting Gygax again.

Same here. I saw the quote and thought "Gygax?" then read up to where I had left off and realised it was about someone else.

Every time I see a thread on whether the game is "balanced" I keep thinking of the witch scene in the movie version of Monty Python and the Holy Grail (these days I need to distinguish from the play).

"We shall use my finest scales."

There's a play?

Hmm. Those scales look as though they'd be the ones used to determine balance in most games. Including "yep, they balanced up at one vague point while see-sawing, we've found a witch! Er, balanced class!"

You got me, it's really a musical. And there are a number of new songs in the musical as well as new characters. The "I'm not dead yet" skit has its own song now.

Highlights:

but overall, monks are not weak, others classes are just more powerful than them.

Didn't see any immediately hilarious quotes in the third thread.

I liked emeraldstreak's brilliant solution of a horse riding commoner using use psionic device (with a whopping +10 modifier, tops) vs. a chuul to ego whip it to zero charisma. Not only would he have a fair chance of fucking up his UPD roll and rendering the wand unusable for the day, but a level one elf commoner could just chuck arrows from the back of a horse and for a lot cheaper.

But he's so damn proud that it's sad.

That's a shame.

You missed the part where someone claims magic missile is overpowered.

Convenience spells (such as creating food and water, teleport and the like) absolutely need to be bumped up in level.

Fireball (radius better than similar line of Lightning Bolt)

Why?? Oh and the discussion on magic missile runs a couple of pages.

http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php? ... Umm...that is a very viable tactic (not really effective). Hit and run tactics should always be on the table.

I don't get it. They're saying they want to fix the game and then they say they don't want to change anything. So what do they want?

Color me confused.

Oh. I remember that thread. That was where the guy said that wish wasn't bad because you needed a spell that could fix any potential problem and it wasn't that bad if you limited it to the bullet points.

Apparently multiple castings never occured to him.

Oh, thats classic.

How exactly am I contorting the rules?

By being literal. You think you can view the rules that way, I don't.

And somewhere, an angel earned a dumbfvck tag.

And here is something to make you cry (maybe this has been in the rules for a while, but it seems really stupid in black and white)

From the latest sage advice column-
Q: Dear Sage
What happens when an assassin becomes non-evil?
--Thomas

A: A character who no longer meets the requirements of his prestige class not only can’t advance any further in that class, but he also “loses the benefit of any class features or other special abilities granted by the class.” (Complete Warrior, p16) You retain Hit Dice (and the hit points derived from), base attack bonus, and base save bonuses granted by the prestige class.

The rules don’t specifically list skill points (and class skills) as falling into either category; the Sage recommends that the character retain these functions even if he no longer meets the class requirements.

So your repentant assassin would lose his sneak attack, death attack, poison use, save bonus against poison, uncanny dodge, improved uncanny dodge, and hide in plain sight class features, as well as his assassin spellcasting and any weapon and armor proficiencies gained from the class. He’d keep the skill ranks he bought with his assassin levels, as well as the hit points, base attack, and base save bonuses gained from those class levels. He also couldn’t gain any more assassin levels until his alignment returned to evil (at which point he’d also regain the various features he lost when his alignment changed to non-evil).

So, the helm of opposite alignment and possibly feeblemind (lost skill points! Do you still qualify for your prestige class?) simply turn off prestige class abilities? Neat. That isn't stupid in any way.

There was a time I did too. Now I believe that the skill system should be able to mimic those effects at an appropriate level.

I really find there to be a distinction between 'Wizards can't cast Invisibility, so now Hats of Invisibility also don't exist' and 'If you're good enough at hiding, you can vanish from plain sight, like a ninja or Batman. Plus, there are Hats of Invisibility.'

The second scenario more accurately depicts myth, fiction, and awesome.

And there's a difference between both of those and "there's a spell called 'invisibility,' but its actual game effect is +X to hide," which seemed to be what the original quote wanted.

A spell of "you can use skill X at a level-appropriate bonus, whether you've trained it or not" is actually potentially really good for the system, because it means people are using spells to increase their versatility, whereas the other two approaches involve either making the skill worthless or giving yourself a bonus to a skill that was already level-appropriate, either one of which means that people without the spell can't compete.
