Which is fine. But the guy's point was that because many settings were produced during 2nd edition, the 2nd edition rules themselves were somehow superior for roleplaying than any other edition. Based solely on the number of settings produced, and not in any way based on the quality or nature of the actual rules.

That is a steaming pile of crap.

Oh yeah, I think that guy was a fucking moron. But I still sort of liked TSR's method of just putting out a bunch of settings.

Rich Baker's flavor sucks. Wallop sounds better than 'Dragon Tail Strike'.

And please don't link that piece of shit comic Control Alt Delete here.

Just curious, MrWaesel, when perusing the internet do you more often find your self filled with rage or disgust?

Yea, I played some fun Spelljammer games too. I thought it did a sea-faring campaign pretty well because it could get away from all that 'realism' which can bog down an adventure.

Both in equal measure. And I'm sure someone has thought up a shitty portmanteau for that.

Except when playing Peggle. Peggle makes me happy.

The troubling thing is, he doesn't seem to realize how badly he sucks at flavor-names. Even when it should be blatantly obvious.

I couldn't see myself referring to it as anything other than 'that knockdown ability' or 'knockdown attack'.

Happily, he has retracted it in the face of a response from various forums that it was, in fact, terribly dorky.
Hopefully Wizards will learn not to ever let Rich Baker name things. They don't need to jam flavor into the basic rules anyway.

They had giant hamsters.

While I was a fan of vanilla Planescape for a while, and for a longer duration, a fan of heavily modified Planescape, the ones that will always have a special place in my heart next to my girlfriend and pav bhaji are some (house-ruled) Dark Sun and Forgotten Realms as well as a small slab continent and archipelago chain of some obscure world my brother, a close friend, and my own making.

When this custom setting of ours was agreed as 'too cartoony', as it had been in existence for about 8 years (or let's just say it was old enough for AD&D 2e up through to 3.5e) I pushed for an Undead Apocalypse.
You know, when the rate of corporeal undead outgrows the capability of the living to destroy them.
And given that it was a "godless world" run by powerful regional spirits and they were bound by rules set upon them by uncaring remote beings (as in, can't step in personally to fix things), eventually it became desolate and ruined, rolled up like a scroll, and ended with a whimper.

I seriously wish more failed settings would do same.

I also think Wallop is a far more awesome name.

And yeah, MrWaesel, it seems that you hate pretty much everything that exists on the Internet, sometimes.

That is where MrWaesel is full of failure. I don't limit myself to the internet.

The thing that gets me is how blindingly obvious it is that in Dungeons and Dragons you will sometimes be fighting against enemies who are not humanoid in shape. Why would you write flavor text about doing spinning moves between the legs of your opponent when your enemy is quite likely a god damned giant snake?

witch wrote:I don't deny the druid is overpowered. I deny the cleric is, and not in general, but in the case of core. I have seen no proof that the cleric is a combat monster without first spending tons of spellslots on buffs that last rounds or minutes/level, and hence require actions during which the others are already directly affecting the enemy. If the cleric wants Divine Favor, Divine Power and Enlarge Person - he's likely to spend some time during combat to buff.

Witch wrote:(About Cleric SoDs)The first one, to my knowledge, is a spell that allows Fortitude saves and requires a melee attack. If it requires you to be in melee, you're likely up against a class with good Fortitude saves.

Yeah, reading through that thread, I think I'm beginning to understand why Waesel and Frank have so much hatred. If stupid was a finite resource, then WotC would be doing the world a favour by strip-mining it so that there was none left already.

Crissa at [unixtime wrote:1192370722[/unixtime]]How many official settings for 3.5?

How many for 2ed?

That's an interesting question. The problem with the question is that there is an assumption as to what is an "official setting" for an "edition." Many of the official settings for 2E AD&D had so many changes to the fundamental rule set that they no longer really were based on the core 2E rules anymore. Dark Sun is the perfect example of an official setting for its own edition of AD&D.

Going even further, how many official settings were designed for 2E post complete series with kits? How many official settings were desiged for 2E post options series? The answer is none. The closing years of TSR had a complete disconnect between core game design and scenario game design with the latter becomming a power hungry grab which required custom rules in order to give the power necessary for the levels they thought people wanted to play.

The only reason I ever liked Spelljammer was that it was so similiar to an old Tom Baker Dr. Who episode where immortals were stealing crews from all over time to pilot sailing ships through space across the solar system. I managed to avoid the hippos for several years. I don't think I ever knew about the hampsters until after the fact.

And of course Lankhmar was an "official" 2E setting as it had been for 1E with still all the hacked rules against spellcasters which even their own module designers never bothered to apply.

No actually the number of 2E official scenarios which used the official core 2E rules were few to none. There was a tendency in 3E design to make new scenarios be playable with the core rules and not so far removed that they practically needed their own ruleset because core would either break the scenario or be broken by it.

Well honestly, there's very little connection between splatbooks and settings nowadays.

Plus in 2E, it wasn't even that bad, because setting books were mostly details and descriptions about the settings, not new rules. The modern 3E setting book is half splatbook and half setting. I'd really prefer if they went with the GURPS paradigm of having all their mechanics in core books and then writing setting books that just use existing mechanics, instead of constantly coming up with a grab bag of new crap all the time.

Finite or not, WotC is making profit off of it anyway. I don't blame them; if you so much as want to succeed in the world of capitalist corporate business, you need to work all the angles, and take advantage of everybody's intelligence, or lack thereof.

People honestly write software and perform hours of ingame testing just to make some classes in WoW work. I agree with tard that D&D doesn't need to be like that but for the exact opposite reason.

That was a really good Dr Who story, tzor.
