I'm reasonably certain that these things aren't aberrations. I'm studiously not looking the stats up, because that wouldn't really be fair, even though I know what these are, and broadly, one of the dangers of them.

Sunbeam works a little differently than I thought.

"Each creature in the beam is blinded and takes 4d6 points of damage. Any creatures to which sunlight is harmful or unnatural take double damage. A successful Reflex save negates the blindness and reduces the damage by half."

Might be more useful on drow than I anticipated.

If you go with the blasting plan, you might want to see if you have any method of blocking line of sight. If Berry has smokesticks, they could cover your retreat if the eye rays end up being threatening.

A bag of flour or casting of Obscuring Mist might also keep you from getting lazored.

Hellz yeah. You can do ridiculous stuff with the diversionary alchemicals and a little prep time. I should try digging up something to trade when Xil gets back to the rest of the party. She's probably going to have finished her puppy-kicking quota for the month by the time she meets people wearing PC t-shirts again, which will coincidentally probably involve having a bit more identified gear on hand to distribute.

Yeah, but can you just eat them on the spot? For fun? Or does Xil have to waste that delicious soul flavor using it to boost a summon monster spell so it is harder to block with spell resistance?

The idea is to get permanently rid of the soul before someone else steals or breaks the vessel.

There are spells that use souls directly, as I recall. And certain monsters. Dread mummies themselves don't eat souls directly. You could try to craft a small magic item with it.
