The entries are formatted and, in the case of the FATAL review, abridged. There's some introductory "about the author" bits at the start of each entry, and as I said there's the lengthy (and original) introduction. But yeah, the first four entries are all available on the web (if you deign to search). Speaking of which, next up is:

Pursuing the Libido's Dark Side (2004)
by Daniel Terdiman

Terdiman is a journalist, primarily with CNET News, and "Pursuing" is basically "A Rape in Cyberspace: 20 Years Later" - which Terdiman is a good enough journalist to admit. "Pursuing" looks at, again, rape in games, this time how rape happens in a MMO called
Sociolotron.
Image[
Jeez, he wasn't kidding. I pulled up one of the random screenshots they use to advertise the game, and there's a report of a rape being committed.
Terdiman compares it to EverQuest or Ultima Online except with higher emphasis on social interaction, fewer player restraints, and sexual elements. While he does a workmanlike job of covering the basic issues and mining some quotes on rape in gaming, again there isn't much new here that hasn't been sort of discussed before, except perhaps Sociolotron's whole attitude to the think - where TinyMUD treated the Mr. Bungle situation as something shocking, novel and in need of deep pseudo-litigious philosophizing, the Sociolotron guys hold mock trials with predetermined sentences for those found guilty - and, perhaps more tellingly, the whole "my virtual character was raped" thing doesn't quite carry the same cachet with these MUDders, who while they admit it still has emotional impact emphasize the weird consensual/non-consensual sexual fantasy issues...which I don't think they quite get across very well, but the basic argument appears to be "you don't play Corruption of Champions to not get raped." Which might work for CoC, but when you're playing a game with other actual players who can choose whether or not to rape you and rape is explicitly not the purpose of the game, it gets back to consent again.
Image
Like all the other articles so far, and I'm going to predict "probably to come," this is another article taken off the web and reproduced with the permission of the author. Which is sad, because it really makes this book feel much lazier than it probably was; the editors probably took a long time searching for different articles and crap on rape in gaming and then went through the trouble of getting permissions and formatting them and adding little bio-pieces to the front, and the end result so far is still about as satisfying as those assholes who auto-collate groups of wikipedia pages and sell them to you as bound "books" print-on-demand.

Yeah, it really seems like what they sold you was time spent collating and a table of contents.

Redefine the Grind (2005)
by Shawn Rider

Another entry about Sociolotron. It begins:
BabyGirl was made to be raped. Wearing a pink thong, barely hidden by a scant chain mail miniskirt, a gold and pink bustier, and golden cuffs, she was only 50% covered, and her genitals were more than 60% exposed. She strode down the streets of London in thigh-high riding boots, and she'd sell herself to anyone for five dollars.

But she wasn't interested in selling herself. She did that a few times, just to try it out. It was as she expected. As we expected. No, she was after something much more compelling, disgusting, and exciting. She wore flouncy outfits and trod unsafe paths in the dark, working hard to entice the thugs and gang members from their shadows. Baby Girl wants to be raped.
This article gives a different dynamic; where previously most of the authors had talked about nonconsensual rape as bad in no uncertain terms, only alluding to sexual fantasies of rape, Rider gives us a look from inside the skull of someone that headed into Sociolotron because he'd heard of the violence (sexual and otherwise) and said "I gots to get me some of that!"

Well, not quite. It looks like more morbid curiosity than anything, and one of the first things he does (this is on the character preceeding BabyGirl) is get a chastity belt from a workshop, where he notices an NPC is "harvesting used sperm on an obscene altar in the corner." So, it's a different sort of dynamic, but he made it clear that while he saw a lot of stuff not much actually happened to his character. SO like the stay-at-home milfs outside of porn, to actually participate in any of the nasty action he had to go seek it out...as BabyGirl. Unfortunately, after a month walking the bad streets of post-apocalyptic London, BabyGirl was not raped once.

Image
"I think my clock is broken."

At which point Rider admits that freedom of action was the major attraction to a game which is otherwise noticeably lackluster in graphics, characterization, and mechanics. However, Sociolotron has mechanics for syphilis, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, prostitution, and of course rape. Rider pursues this tack in a series of interviews with different players in the game, focusing more on the social implications and attraction of having sex in an MMO more than rape.

In fact, despite the provocative opening paragraphs, the article isn't about rape at all, which is rather disappointing. It's more of a broad look at sex and gender dynamics in Sociolotron. While kind of interesting when following the previous article, it doesn't really say anything about the topic at hand, except that in parts of the interwebs people have grown up to accept that virtual rape is a whole thing.

Moving on...

And You Thought Grand Theft Auto Was Bad (2009)
by Leigh Alexander

The article begins by talking about "Video Game Scolds" - people that associate violent or sexual content in video games with harming the children and thus such materials should be censored or banned. I've been on the other side of that argument - for comic books, video games, and whatever else - too many times to give it any credence. This article...well, more of a review...is about a Japanese rape simulator called RapeLay, which while already banned on eBay and Amazon the author gleefully pirates to play and give us a micro-review. This is basically an equivalent attitude to the FATAL review, where the reviewer is acting put-upon and depressed at the humanity that has led to the creation of this terrible product, blah blah blah.
The game begins with a man standing on a subway platform, stalking a girl in a blue dress. On the platform, you can click "prayer" to summon a wind that lifts her skirt. She blushes.
It basically starts off as a visual novel, and the joke is that while deeply disturbing to play a rapist all the girls you the player go after get into it and get off on being raped.

However, here is where things change: Leigh Alexander actually did the research, citing books and studies on Japanese train-gropers and the rest of the society that gave birth to RapeLay. Not all the facts are correct (if there's a "hack" that can un-mosaic a censored hentai comic or anime I've never heard of it; to my knowledge the works are uncensored by hand using photoshop), but it still shows a fair bit more effort than others so far. Though not too much, because this is a Slate article and not an out-and-out academic essay.

Aside from some discussions about how RapeLay comes from a societal background where sexual molestation on trains is a major and ongoing problem, I think the most important distinction that Alexander makes is that RapeLay is more comparable to a pornographic novel than Super Mario Bros. Whereas the previous articles all covered rape in roleplay, it was people roleplaying as a group, interacting with each other - RapeLay is definitely a single-player game. That doesn't make it better or worse, but it does change the dynamic significantly, at least to my mind.

Why I'm Not Speaking At Penny Arcade Expo East (2011)
by Courtney Stanton

Remember the dickwolves? I remember the dickwolves.
Image
...many Penny Arcade fans jumped to their defense, canonizing the "dickwolf" as a symbol of the right to tell rape jokes.
Stanton responded to the Dickwolf bruhaha by putting out the "Dickwolf Survivor's Guild" T-shirt, with profits donated to the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center.

Image
This shirt is actually much better than the original joke. She later took it down.

The PA East team invited her to speak at the expo, but Stanton declined. In her own words:
...it went viral in the video game community, landed on Reddit, Metafilter, and 4chan, and I spent the next month or so being threatened daily with rape, death, being raped to death, and other such imaginative variations on the topic.
That's all before we get to the actual essay!

The essay itself is just an intelligent if rather snarky explanation that Stanton didn't want to attend the PAX event for professional and personal reasons, and aside from the dickwolf thing has little to do with rape. Really, in the context of this book I guess the whole point of including it is to talk about the whole dickwolf thing in context - something that would have been much easier if they'd just managed to get the permissions for the PA strips and t-shirt images for this book, but that's probably asking too much.

There is a link to the post, but it appears to have disappeared from it's proper place in the grand scheme that is the internet. Here it is for anybody that obsesses over these things:

Does Tomb Raider's Lara Croft Really Have To Be The Survivor Of A Rape Attempt (2012)
by Mary Hamilton
Square Enix did not respond to a request for comment.
This essay is about a scene in the Tomb Raider reboot where someone attempts to sexually assault Lara Croft and she blows his head off with a shotgun. Hamilton's main complaint - and it is a valid complaint! - is that trying to rape Lara Croft is lazy writing. There's little set up for it, and no reason to make her a victim in this specific regard, and it doesn't really add anything to her character. Resident sausagefuhrer Ron Rosenberg, executive producer on the game, gave an interview to Kotaku about it and Hamilton basically rips into it.

I wish this were a more in-depth piece, because one of the things I was hoping somebody in this book would try to address is: When is rape okay in gaming?

Obviously, it depends largely on the context - generally speaking, rape is more acceptable in adult games than non-adult games, but beyond that when is it an acceptable story element? Certainly there are any number of novels and short stories and movies that use rape, and sometimes it's lazy short-hand and sometimes it's sex fantasy and sometimes it's gritty realism and other times it's black humor. It might be helpful to give some good examples, but this isn't that kind of book.

Three Words I Said To The Man I Defeated in Gears of War That I'll Never Say Again (2012)
by Patricia Hernandez
I raped you.
Basic trash talk, but spoken over the network by a rape survivor it set off an introspective diatribe.
Playing games can bring the Hyde out in many of us.
A valid point, Hernandez! Part of roleplaying is being free to play a different character, let loose from the typical restrictions of everyday life.

A large part of this essay is a rape survivor dealing with, well, rape culture. And it's not raging against the machine or sex fantasies, it's a person that feels degraded and worthless from the experience.
Trash talk makes it obvious that the implicit understanding of the language of dominion isn't just sexualized. It's gendered.
And the key realization is like something from Languages of Pao: our culture's sexual power politics is in many cases built into the language and behavior, so that it's hard for people to even see it, much less escape from it.

It's a different, and interesting take on the issue - though really more to do with rape and society as a whole than rape in gaming.

http://kotaku.com/5914348/three-words-i ... -say-again

Aside from a couple "About the Editors" and a brief glossary, that is it, that is the book. As noted, this was far less than I hoped it would be...far far less than it could have been. I don't particularly feel I know any better about rape in gaming after reading all that than I did before, which makes me sad - because I think it is an issue that should be addressed, at least at some point.

To me at least, you have to accept that sex is a part of most settings. Oh, maybe not Tetris unless you've got a fetish for geometry, but for roleplaying games it's definitely an element in every game. The question is how to handle it. Personally, I would not be comfortable sitting at a game reading out my erotic fanfiction or interacting at that level with players - but I'll say that the NPC's mother was raped by Demogorgon and that's why he's a half-fiend. Maybe not to a group of 12-year olds, though. I also would never rape a player character - oh, I'll joke about it, and have. Part of the whole Crypts of Chaos thing was where the players thought that any one who drank the water would be raped by a giant. That didn't mean I had an actual naked giant there pointing a deadly boner at people. Was that too far? I dunno. Certainly FATAL takes it too far, at least for me. I could run a game of FATAL, but I can't think of any scenario where I actually would - the idea of running a game set in the RapeVerse is squicktastic to me, and I don't like the idea of running rapefics. Even dabbling at Corruption of Champions there's a lot of elements to it that are just doubleplusungood to me.

But that's just me! There are other people out there that can handle a little rape in their games, and a few that might actually enjoy roleplaying rape fantasies. They're welcome to it, and I don't begrudge them that, and I wouldn't want to limit their right to that.

Thanks.

Honestly, the biggest thing I take away from this is that you, AH, could write a better book addressing rape in gaming. Just the fact that you address not only that the language of power is embedded in our culture, but that it's hard to see for precisely that reason tells me that you're probably better suited to the discussion than a lot of people who try to be a part of it.

Well, that was part of the last article, but I appreciate the thought anyway. Honestly, I have fiddled with an article on sex in Call of Cthulhu - sort of an analogue to the book I was writing - but I haven't finished it yet.

Ah, I've been doing event coverage this weekend, so my reading's not been 100%. Yeah, I still think that several people on here could produce a better book of essays on this subject than what you bought here.

It sounds like Hernandez relies implicitly on the "only men rape, and only women are raped" canard for her point. Did I read that wrong?

No, I'm pretty sure that every article more or less made the points that 1) men are not the only rapists and women are not the only rape victims, and 2) however, male-on-female rape is by far the majority in both real life and fiction. So while one of them (I honestly can't remember which) cited the fact that something like 1 in 33 men are raped in their lifetimes, most of them focus on male-on-female rape because it's most prevalent and basically the default assumption when you say "rape." Indeed, in all of these articles I don't think I ran across a single anecdote of male-on-male or female-on-male or female-on-female rape in a roleplaying or gaming context.

It depends on the method of censoring. Professional works are usually censored pretty thouroughly. However, many amateur web artists go about it lazily, just applying a basic filter over the image that can be easily removed. I spent way too much time doing that in the late 90s/early00s. Usually not worth the effort

I kinda... I've kind of approached the point where I respect people more, and more who DON'T apologize.
Maybe, cause I grew up in the U.S. or maybe some other social factor I don't know, but man it certainly more appealing and refreshing people are forced into this situation.

Speaker:
Rape/Racism/Homophobia/Adultery/Drugs ~ Charlie Sheen shit

Audience member: Dude that's totally offensive, you shouldn't say things like that it hurts people (/people's feelings)I'm LEADING THE BOYCOTT ON YOU. NOW!

With resolutions like
A. Issue fake and mandatory apology (often accompanied with a promise to get help / and or money for indulgences granted by the almighty Press)

B. Tell them to fuck right off.

I wish more people to tell them to fuck right off.

I respect the people a little bit more who tell those people to fuck right off.

All that being said... I remember reading a lot about things like the wolf/dog rape thread and a few other crazy posts on here, and one of them actually made me think/say something like:

"The second Mister Cavern utters the words "Shuma-Gorath Sex Cultists" or synonyms there of the game comes to a halt and we discuss character integrity and where we stand on rights of gaming"

Its crazy, but people have a lot of weird shit going on out there, that everyone should know up front.

Whatever that was, it doesn't seem to exist anymore. Though in all honesty I withdraw the question.

I don't actually care if people would be pissed off about that or not. It be really great though if we could go all of 2014 with people saying

"You know what? I do feel "x" way." instead of "Here let me issue a half-assed insincere apology" Thats actually way more important that people carrying torches about.

Wait... I remember that vaguely. I actually really like berserk, and think its one of the better fantasy anime out there. Come to think of it yeah it great.

All that being said it doesn't diminish Guts 1 bit as a character. Rape is the new dead parents, I guess as they say, and Guts had both things going on, but I realize at this moment why that is, and it proves one of the Den's philosophies really:

Murder Hobos.

Author seem to think subconsciously that characters need REALLY REALLY, good motivations to go around stabbing people in the face, and calling themselves anything other than villains.
On some level that at least that makes sense. I could be as they say lazy writing falling back on popular tropes also... but...

When you think about it, a good number of people like to believe (not that its implicitly true mind you) that a good stable home is all a child needs to grow to be a loving caring individual.
So if you were NOT a victim of Teifling or Orcish or Deep One Rape camps
or
If your Parent were NOT slaughtered in front of your tear-filled eyes by Thulsa Doom and his minons.

Why the fuck are going around breaking into people houses and killing them because they're different than you?

The last character I played was in a 'zero to hero' style campaign, so he was a teen boy who wanted to stab things. He had loving parents, and he constantly wished they had been killed in an orc raid when he was a kid. Having living parents just didn't seem right to him to be a real adventurer.

B. Tell them to fuck right off.

I wish more people to tell them to fuck right off.

I respect the people a little bit more who tell those people to fuck right off.
I don't.

But allow me to clarify that I think either solution is bad. Why is solution A bad? Because it is fake, as you said, it is almost always fake. One in a hundred times this kind of apology is a sincere attempt to turn things around, and one in a hundred times that attempt actually works. You might as well not waste our bloody time trying.

B, however, denies that there is a problem. Which I do not think anyone necessarily has the ability to judge, sitting from where they are. There are lots of examples of situations which we now, from our positions at the dawn of the 21st century, have relatively recently decided were bad, and even more recently decided were bad enough to do something about it. So as "what is a problem" changes day by day, I do not think it wise to presume. Certainly, it's not really that worth taking to the field over a choice I may one day regret.

However, if there is something of worth - of beauty, of humour, of whatever - in what I have made, then that stands for itself and will continue to stand for some time to come, in spite of all other negative qualities. So I do not think I necessarily need to defend my art (or game design, or whatever), as it can defend itself, and the best medicine in this case is to remain silent and not engage with my critics. If my art is not particularly mature, so what?

Having criticized various choices in game design (and art, etc) before, I know that almost any answer a game designer (or artist) provided would only feed more ammunition to detractors. So it is best for my sake, and for the work's sake, for me to keep my damn fool mouth shut. The old "better to let others think you for a fool, than open your mouth and prove them right" proverb is here in full force.

This applies especially when in the context of what we're on about - Krahulik's negative backlash has only ever intensified when he has spoken up about his works in attempts to defend them. It doesn't matter what he says, pretty much. I mean, his specific responses have almost always been less-good ones, but for him every option is bad in the first place. Once in a long while, someone actually chooses the perfect answer that actually completely improves things for everyone - but almost invariably, if you think you're the one who has that answer, you don't. Most people, even brilliant people, are buffoons on this count.

Lawrence of Arabia was raped in a Turkish dungeon.

In his autobiography he wrote:
"a delicious warmth, probably sexual, was swelling through me"
when he was being whipped by guards who afterwards raped him in front of the local governor. After this event Lawrence developed a taste for mascocism and was recored to pay men to whip and beat him.

Some historians think Lawrence made up the rape just to get attention and defame the governor of Daraa.

The rape scene is extended in a director's cut of the film, regular version just shows the whipping and some implied rape.
