Requested...
Ray Winninger's Underground. Mayfair's four-color dystopia written in 1993, using a nerfed version of the DC Heroes "MEGS" system. Logarithms! Atomic Kennedy! Ronald Reagan clone soldiers!
Here's already a pretty good overview of the game. http://projects.inklesspen.com/fatal-an ... derground/

I would like to Second that request for a review of the Renraku Arcology Shutdown Book. Also the Cyberpirates! supplement for why its gonzo.
Antariuk, How is that review of the Green Ronin book a coming? Maybe a joint review you could do with deaddmwalking, if he's interested as well? (Assuming you guys aren't already working on that of course)

What I find wrong w/ 4th edition: "I want to stab dragons the size of a small keep with skin like supple adamantine and command over time and space to death with my longsword in head to head combat, but I want to be totally within realistic capabilities of a real human being!" --Caedrus mocking 4rries

I'm about halfway through right now. Turns out that cross-referencing three versions of the same adventure takes a lot of time, as does trying to be snarky and entertaining (and I'm German, so we all know how that'll turn out). But I wouldn't mind a team-up if deaddmwalking can make sense of my wish-wash.Aryxbez wrote:Antariuk, How is that review of the Green Ronin book a coming? I would like to see reviews of precursor game lines like Traveller, Runequest, OD&D modules, etc. It would be specially interesting if the reviews focused on "first-time" elements that those lines brought to the hobby.
The traditional playstyle is, above all else, the style of playing all games the same way, supported by the ambiguity and lack of procedure in the traditional game text. - Eero Tuovinen

I would love to see a review of Nightbane. I would write it myself, but I don't consider myself competent.
Everything I learned about DnD, I learned from Frank Trollman.

Anyone got GURPS Dragons and the time/inclination to review it?
Cuz apparently I gotta break this down for you dense motherfuckers- I'm trans feminine nonbinary. My pronouns are they/them.

Given I've only ever met one other person in real life (or, indeed, anywhere but the sjgames forums) who actually enjoyed playing GURPS, and that the 4th edition has been out for over a decade now, I'm considering doing a comparative review between 3rd (which I've literally never looked at and know only through Frank's frothing hate) and 4th.
Would anyone be interested in that? Does anyone have suggestions on how to write a review? I never have. Would that be an OSSR, given the >10yr thing?

The toolkit games of GURPS and HERO just don't generate edition wars the way games with more set-in-stone rules do. Unlike a new edition of D&D or Vampire, no one is saying you have to change anything you were doing. With the old edition, you took what pats you liked and made a game out of it, with the new edition you take what parts you like and make a game out of it.momothefiddler wrote:And here I thought the lack of edition wars was a lack of player base, not a lack of editions.
A new edition of GURPS might change the points cost for something up or down, but it's still just a set of options. Some people might not like the new main book, but it doesn't create edition wars for the same reason that a book like Unearthed Arcana doesn't set off edition wars for D&D.

Find me a pdf of AW I can download without paying money I don't have, and I'll consider it. Buy a copy of AW for me, and I'll do it, regardless of how long the book is.

Apocalypse World isn't oldschool. More importantly, there's not actually much to talk about. There's no setting, little mechanics, and hardly any new ideas. Not that complete creative bankruptcy should bar something from the harsh glare of an OSSR, but the stuff that does make Apocalypse World stand out has already been discussed to death on various threads.
We've deconstructed the resolution mechanics, the ethos of the game, how imbalanced the basic maneuvers of the game are, the random stupid crap like the sex moves, and even some of the clingy bits of dogshit like the extremely immature names. What more is there left to talk about? All that's really left is making fun of Vince Baker, but if you want to do that I think that doing it in the context of Poison'd would be better. Not only is there more to demonize him about there but the premise of that Poison'd game (an unflinching grimdark deconstruction of historical piracy) is at least modestly more interesting and original than that of Apocalypse World (a Firefly-edgy softcore porn version of Mad Max).

Your freedom to add and change rules in the middle of the game is in direct conflict with my ability to understand that rules system before I decided whether or not to join your game.
In short, your entire post is dismissive of not merely my intelligence, but my agency. And I don't mean agency as a player within one of your games, I mean my agency as a person. You do not want me to be informed when I make the fundamental decisions of deciding whether to join your game or buying your rules system.
Good point on the not Old School thing. It's only half-way. Notably, though, I'm not sure "(Copyright)2k+10" is a legitimate way to write a copyright date...
But, hell, I reviewed FATAL in full to put to rest any possibility of Hall claiming things were reviewed out of context. And that was a thousand plus pages. Maybe I'll do the same for AW. It's like wading through five hundred pounds of shit when you've previously waded through 2 tons of it.
