The Pokemon card game was fun, but kind of limited in scope and not all that well balanced. Are there any games that are similar in feel that came afterwards?
By feel I mean monster focused, so a single monster card has multiple attacks and other cards can be played on them to boost their power. Most other card games I've looked at are more MTG-esque where an individual creature card is expected to do one thing before dying.
I know there's the Poke-dominions discussion on here, but my scope is more limited to battling.
Some initial thoughts...
*Evolving cards is an evocative mechanic for Pokemon and should probably stay
*Energy cards... the boring "gives you 1 energy" ones should be jettisoned and more interesting ones like "heals you, increases your attack power, etc." cards should be used instead, if energy mechanics are to be used.
*Make 3v3 the standard so poke-combinations is more important.

Building a better Pokemon card game

Closest thing I can think of is the Monster Rancher Card Game. It was only on Gameboy and its sequel was on Playstation 1.
Here is a video of the Playstation one:

I own this game so I can go into more detail later, if you want.

Okay:
Each player has a deck of 50 cards and a team of 3 monsters. The deck comprises of the moves of the monsters (Attacks and Defense), cards that affect the battlefield (Environment Cards), cards that any monster can use (Special), cards that have minor effects (Trainer Cards).
Monsters can make only one attack per turn. Attacks have a cost called Guts. Guts are accumulated by discarding cards at the end of ones turn into the Guts pile. Attacks have two properties (Power or Intelligence). Some cards can be combined with an attack to give it new effects like playing a Special card to increase the moves damage.
Monster themselves have properties like (Grounded or Aerial) so some attacks may or may not effect them.
During the opponent's turn any leftover Guts can be used to play Defense cards. There are two types Dodge and Block. Unlike attacks, monsters can make multiple defenses as long as you have the cards and the Guts to make them. Certain defense cards can only be against certain attacks.
Environment cards are like YuGiOh's Field cards only one can be active at a time and the newest one replaces the old one. They usually have a persistent effect like deal one damage to Guts each round.
Trainer cards are much like the trainer cards from Pokemon TCG but more useless. They have very minor effects, cheap (guts-wise), and are better off just being replaced by a monster move or special card.
The game starts with each player drawing 5 cards and the person going second can put 2 cards into their guts pile. Next the first player can use any move that are free like some monster moves or other cards. At the end of the turn the player can take any number of remaining cards in hard and discard them to the guts pile.
When all three monsters or the deck runs out of cards that person loses.
This is just a basic overview of the game. There are a couple of other things like hybrid monster cards, and guts damage.
