There are regularly cops patrolling the malls in Canberra. I'd often (more than 50% of the time) see a pair of AFP cops in uniform with their firearms when buying lunch at the mall in my previous job

Of course. But just walking into someone's house is socially unacceptable. OTOH walking into McDonald's is socially acceptable.

plus it's a "keeping the peace" issue. If the person in question is allowed in, shit could go down, and so the officer has the choice of risking allowing shit to go down, or quietly resolving the situation.
