Actually fuck it. Let's just forget about Demon Hunter X

A Hapless Mortal who can't pass his college entrance exams meets
a Hot Vampire who has a rivalry with his childhood best friend who is a Cute Garou that's being hunted by his incest-fetishist cousin who is a Bookish Technocrat who owns a defunct hotel that's being haunted by a
Demure but Sexually Frustrated Wraith.
It's called MonsterHearts and it already exists. The mechanics are a shitshow, but it exists.

Ancient History wrote:
We've already discussed how Yin and Yang Chi are recovered naturally, but perhaps we should add a few new aspects to the game. Let circumstances and character reaction play a part in the recovery of Chi and see if it doesn't make a difference in how the players react. For example, most anime involves a group of people working together. In the classic anime tales, the group was normally four or five characters (coincidentally enough, just like a Strike Team), and there were almost always a few rivalries.
This is where they literally talk about how one team member should be the Handsome Leader, another the Beautiful Girl, the Rebel, the Bruiser, and the Geek.
On first thought, that looks bizarre and unwise. On second thought, if I squint my brain a bit that almost looks like different types of classes for an adventuring party. Sorta kinda maybe.

The big issue is that WW is still stuck on personal horror even though they're telling you to be the cartoon version of the ninja turtles again. They seriously just listed Leo, April, Raph, Mikey and Donatello.

Yes. Although back then, the cartoon didn't look like this:

It looked like this:

But yeah:
  • Leonardo Leads. (Leader)
  • Donatello does machines (Geek)
  • Raphael is cool but crude (Rebel)
  • Michaelangelo is a party dude (Bruiser)
And April is the beautiful girl, because obviously.

...what the fuck is that first one? I only know of the early 90s one really, but I know there was a darker version more recently (as in, the last 20 years sometime) that is more in line with the comics that pre-dated the 90s cartoon (though probably not as dark?) I was not aware of a... no really what even is it?

Anyway, they really should have just said "We're going with Power Rangers Super Sentai."

Or an anime of choice where the characters have a little less in common. Cyber-police would let you cover loads of bases both in skills and gear. But I could see people wanting a Super Sentai thing. Or have Ultraman, Jushin Thunder Liger, Kota Ibushi and Minoru Suzuki team up. Sadly I can't think of any female versions of that, and I am 99% sure that if I search, I'll only find giant-woman fetish porn.

The most recent cartoon reboot of teenage mutant ninja turtles, where April is now a teenager with attitude.

Mecha: The Combination.

The party all can call giant robots that can only be controlled by a few select humans with enough spiral power getter energy [insert fancy new name here] that is otherwise not found in lychantropes/beastmen/undead/etc.

Sakura Kinomoto? Was even part of a 5 people team working in an urban setting and everything.

A bunch of classic Chinese supernatural stories are harem anime's, I remember a story about an imperial exams failure who attracts a demon girl, and then a ghost girl, and they just have sexy scenarios happen to them

Shih can make a difficult Stamina role to spend more Chi than they normally have access to from their Virtue rolls, but nobody's really done the math on these. On a d10, you have a 20% change of getting a hit on a difficulty 9 test. You only need one hit, and if you've maxed out your Stamina you've got five dice to play with. That doesn't guarantee you'll make it, it's like...

1 die: 2/10 = 20%
2 dice: 36/100 = 30%
3 dice: 488/1,000 = 48.8%
4 dice: 5,931/10,000 = 59.31%
5 dice: 67,232/100,000 = 67.23%
The odds are actually worse because 1s substract from your successes.
Indeed!

1 die: 20% (got to get a success)
2 dice: 32% (always works with 2 successes (4%), 1 success works 7/8 times (28%))
3 dice: 39.8% (0.8% 3 successes, 9.6% 2 successes (may be a 1), 29.4% 1 success and no 1s)
4 dice: 44.64% (0.16% 4 successes, 1.92% 3 successes (may be a 1), 11.76% 2 successes (no 1s), 3.36% 2 successes (and a single 1), 27.44% 1 success (no 1s))
5 dice: 46.462% (0.032% 5 successes, 0.64% 4 successes (may be a 1), 5.12% 3 successes (may be up to 2 1s), 13.72% 2 successes (no 1s), 2.94% 2 successes (single 1), 24.01% 1 success (no 1s))

So upgrading to 5 dice from 4 is barely worth it...

The classic problem in oWoD mechanics was the "difficulty 10," where botches had an equal probability to successes, meaning that your chance of success was always equal to your chance of catastrophic failure no matter whether your dicepool was large or small. oMage went bigger than that, and had difficulties above ten, where to get a success you had to roll a ten and then roll above a cetain number on an additional bonus die - but natural 1s still subtracted success. In those instances, lower skilled individuals had a higher chance of success than people who rolled a lot of dice.

But while such edge cases are fun and ridiculous to talk about, the real culprit is that the engine was clunky and bad all the way through. The game wanted you to make dynamic choices to kick, or bite, or do different kinds of punches. The combat system had a huge fucktonne of options. But because the underlying probabilities were all shit, no one actually used that crap. Werewolves had a huge list of shit they could do like snap with their jaws or punch or kick or slam people with their shoulders, but they never actually did any of that shit. There was just a single maneuver that had the best ratio of hit probability and damage output (which as I recall was slashing with your claws) and people just spammed the fuck out of it. The only time anyone ever bit people in combat was when they had stacked enough magic powers on their bite to make doing anything else pointless. And then you still didn't have combat action diversity.

Getting people to dynamically choose meaningfully different combat options requires you to have math hammered the fuck out of the system so that there are actual reasons to choose one option or another. Shit game systems like Storyteller or Savage Worlds aren't even mathhammered to the point where "better skill is better than worse skill" so obviously they haven't been mathed out to the point where it is a reasonable life choice to use all these different options in different circumstances. Because fucking obviously.

Several times White Wolf tried to make games that were basically all about combat. And those were reviled by the fanbase in all cases. But honestly I think it was more that these games extremely failed to meet minimum acceptable design specifications, more than the fact that swords and trenchcoats was "playing the game wrong." Although the White Wolf design team did increasingly hide behind the latter excuse.
