Dear Midnight, you have actually made me sad. I took a day off of posting yesterday because of actual sadness you made me feel in my heart for you.

Is anything funnier than the idea of a standard 3.x encounter taking an hour? Did they just ban SoD spells and any attack that did more than 20 points of damage? The last 3.x battle I was in lasted exactly 3 dice rolls.

I typically play around level 5. My encountess last one of two lengths:
1) 30 seconds. I prepared ray of stupidity and true strike. It's a single big fucking bear. Encounter over. I train it to be a mount. Actual encounter.
2) 5-10 minutes. Buffs in conjunction with save or lose. Sometimes cleanup is slow.

RHoD's *huge* opener took 15 min.

Each encounter is supposed to take about an hour as per the DMG, and even then thats a lot less time then in 3.x.
What the hell, the only time in 3.x where a battle took that long was final battle that raged across multiple floors.

Our battles have been taking about half an hour usually (level 9), but the reason is three-fold: only one person in the party has a SoD available and I roll 16+ on saves half the time, and I also tend to make my party fight about four or five monsters at a time.

Mike Pondsmith, the man who wrote "Cyberpunk 2020" and "Castle Falkenstein" (both of which gave me many hours of fun in my teen years). What does one notice about Mr Pondsmith, apart from his exquisite flat-top and positively patriarchal beard?

I can't believe that kind of discourteous bullsh*t Krome is pushing is even getting a hearing in 2008.

The rules serve the game, not vice versa.

It's the TPK people that annoy me.

To be fair, I think there should be a mechanic where chainmail bikinis magically have the protection of full plate. :D

Well, to be fair, Krome is arguing that *most* gamers, designers, and artists are white males. Pointing out a single exception doesn't invalidate his point. Now, that's unfortunate, because we really need more hot chicks in the hobby.

What I find interesting about the original point of that thread was that they specifically needed to introduce a white male fighter. I mean, it's not like there were no white male iconics (Jozan anyone?). So does adding Regdar mean that they actually wanted to perpetuate the idea that white males are weak and underpowered?

Apparently, the 4e DMG is the best ever because it doesn't tell you a damn thing about how to build your own world.

And this from a board supposedly full of narrativists/roleplayers.

Why should building a world matter? It's not like the PC's can really do anything to affect it. 4E doesn't even have the crafting system of a good MMO, even making a potion is a zero sum game.

We should just face the facts, 4E is a combat simulator, not a RPG.

Correction: 4th Edition is a poor combat simulator.

What the fuck is with people on ENWorld quoting posts and saying "This"?

Is it a tactic to initiate a circlejerk or something?

I think it has turned into a time-honored tradition on EN by now.

No, no. See what you were suppose to do was take an actual suit of fullplate, then glam it to just look like a chainmail bikini or battle briefs. Best of both worlds then.

Actually, that was what the main discussion was about. And it seems a lot of the posters think that's a good idea, too.

I wonder if that's because there are a pile of 15-year olds who have spent years with WoW so they don't even think that affecting the game world is a positive virtue.

While I loathe the god damn 'Omg a player isn't playing his class in the narrow role the most Holy and Perfect Devs had intended it for, burn him!' replies, that sounds like the player is just being a jackass.

If it was just the dagger-wielding paladin *or* the refusal to heal, I could see the case that he's just being a "roleplayer." But if you don't want to do one single thing that paladins do, you have to wonder why you took it as a class. In 3.x, a person who wore heavy armor but cowered behind less tough characters would be viewed pretty harshly too.

Yes, the player is a jackass. However, I don't think that paladins should have to wear heavy armor and stand at the front line.

I'm sure he is healing... he probably is just healing himself.

Class roles are lame at the end of the day. The 3e cleric archer actively pisses people off despite being more effective than the vast majority of fighting classes. People hear "cleric" and assume that you'll spend all your class features making them awesome instead of yourself.

Heck, I once made a character for a guy that was a griffin-riding Rogue who stacked his sneak damage with his lance damage. He played it for a session before he made a new character because it "didn't feel like a warrior" despite the fact that he was causing guys to explode by hitting them with a lance.

At the end of the day, helping other characters should be a choice and not a role. If a bard doesn't want to learn a Cure spell, he shouldn't have to and the game should make that at least a neutral choice.
