Explore. Looks like disguising ourselves as robots will be the key to avoiding the silver robots in the future.

Vote recognized; exploring their cell.

158
Searching the cell doesn’t take long. It’s completely empty, but in the darkest corner is a narrow tunnel that looks like as if something has chewed through the metal walls. Sonic and Tails can explore it (turn to 135), or they can try to get out through the hole in the ceiling (turn to 284). Or if Sonic has an Eggs-terminate cartridge, he can examine that (turn to 14).

Sonic already examined the Eggs-terminate cartridge. Please make your votes by 9:00 AM PDT or a choice reaches 3 votes to guarantee that they will be counted.

Votes registered; exploring the tunnel.

135
‘I’ll lead,’ Sonic says boldly, and crouches to enter the tunnel. Once inside the roof gets higher and the two can walk along comfortably, although it’s almost totally dark. Something clanks ahead of them. ‘Robots!’ whispers Sonic. ‘You chill here. I’ll attack.’

‘It didn’t sound like a robot,’ whispers Tails. ‘It sounded like – well, just metal. It could be a friend of ours.’

‘Nothing metal is a friend of mine,’ snaps Sonic.

‘Why not shout something before you attack?’ Tails suggests.

If you think Sonic is right, turn to 115. If you think Tails is right, turn to 212.

Could be a robot revolutionary. I think we should follow Tails' suggestion and shout out first. Cooler heads and all that.

Votes to designate that Tails is right are recognized.

212
Sonic thinks that calling a warning down the tunnel is soft, but he does it anyway. ‘Yo!’ he bellows. ‘If you’re a creature, we won’t beat yer. If you’re a bot, you’ve had your lot!’

‘YO!’ comes echoing back up the tunnel. ‘I’m the rat and that’s a fact, so don’t attack or I’ll fight back. You’re in my home with its walls of chrome, so tell me swiftly, are you friend or enemy?’

Sonic turns to Tails. ‘We’ve met a bad poet,’ he says.

‘I’m a rapper, not a poet!’ shouts the voice. ‘And my name’s Boombox, the steel-plated rat. Good to meet you, excellent dudes.’ As he approaches, Sonic and Tails see that he’s wearing bits of robot armour, which clank as he walks. Sonic and Tails tell Boombox why they’re in the city and he takes them to his hide-out, deep in a maze of tunnels which he’s dug across the city. The hide-out is lined with things that Boombox has found, and he tells the two adventurous animals to take anything they can use.

Sonic and Tails can take a total of three items between them. They can choose from a cartridge with Pter-egg-dactyl written on it; six rings, some candy bars (‘Only a little bit chewed,’ says Boombox); a power-up shield (it lets Sonic or Tails ignore one hit from an enemy); some armour made of robot parts (enemies have to roll above 12 to hit Sonic if he takes this); a comb (boosts Sonic’s Coolness and Good Looks ratings by one point each); or a computer with a blank screen. ‘I don’t know what’s in that,’ says Boombox. If Sonic chooses the cartridge or the blank screen, turn to 295. If not, Sonic can ask Boombox some questions.

’Why are you here?’     Turn to 46
’Have you seen our friends?’     Turn to 106
’Who’s running the city?’     Turn to 229
’Why are you wearing the robot armour?’     Turn to 26

Please make your votes on what to take and what to ask Boombox by 9:00 AM PDT or a choice reaches 3 votes to guarantee that they will be counted.

I like the armor and the comb. 1 vote for each of those.

I am curious about the computer with the blank screen, but I don't like not being able to ask questions. Still, a half vote for the computer.

Okay, so Sonic takes the armour, comb, and computer with the blank screen.

295
If Sonic has chosen the Pter-egg-dactyl cartridge, he plugs it into his Game Gear and sees this on the screen:

IF ROBOT = SILVER THEN PROCEED ELSE STOP
SHIELDS + ARMS = WINGS
GO TO SKY

If Sonic has chosen the monitor, he cracks it open – to find a bonus life! Write that down on his Vital Statistics. Now turn back to 212 to question Boombox.

With Sonic obtaining the extra life from the computer, please make your votes on what to ask Boombox by 7:00 PM PDT or a choice reaches 3 votes to guarantee that they will be counted.

SONIC’S VITAL STATISTICS
SPEED: 5
STRENGTH: 2
AGILITY: 2
COOLNESS: 5
QUICK WITS: 3
COOL LOOKS: 3
LIVES LEFT: 4
RINGS: 3
EGG-O-MATIC HITS: 0
SONIC’S STUFF
(Equipment, gadgets and stuff that Sonic will collect in his adventures)
Red trainers
Sega Game Gear
Eggs-terminate cartridge
Armor (enemies must roll above 12 to hit Sonic)
Comb (+1 Coolness and Cool Looks)

I'm pretty sure that wearing robot armor makes robots ignore you, but I'd like to get confirmation. Ask about the armor.

Alright then; asking Boombox why he is wearing the robot armour.

26
‘Why are you wearing that armour?’ asks Tails.

‘Hey, the armour’s cool! It’s the latest thing from the Fashion Victim Zone. Everybody’ll be wearing it next year,’ says Boombox, laughing. ‘Seriously dude, the robots are programmed to ignore anything that looks like another robot – it’s as if you’re not there. You can’t be completely safe in this city, but this helps a lot. If you see some armour, my advice is to pick it up.’

What do the two animals ask now?

‘Why are you here?’     Turn to 46
‘Have you seen our friends?’     Turn to 106
‘Who’s running the city?’     Turn to 229

Votes registered; asking Boombox why he is here.

46
‘What are you doing here?’ asks Sonic.

‘We moved in when the city was still open,’ says the rat. ‘Everything was cool then. But a couple of days ago the robots closed the gates and we’re stuck here. Right now I’m trying to free my girlfriend, Dancer. She’s stuck in some weird room with some weird rabbit and a huge machine, and I was looking for something to get them out. Maybe you two are it.’

Sonic and Tails look at each other. ‘That rabbit sounds like Johnny Lightfoot,’ says Tails, ‘We’ve got to help him.’

If the two creatures go off to help their friend, turn to 123. Or they can ask Boombox why he’s wearing robot armour (turn to 26) or if he knows who’s running the city (turn to 229).

Ask if he knows who is running, hopefully we'll be allowed to help our friend (and notably, not his?) later.

Yeah, seems likely that we'll get the choice to save people after asking all our questions. Getting confirmation that this is all Robotnik's evil scheme seems worthwhile.

Votes recognized; asking Boombox if he knows who’s running the city.

229
‘Who’s running this joint?’ asks Sonic. ‘We’ve got a mega-sized bone to pick with him.’

‘I don’t know his name,’ replies Boombox, ‘but I’d recognize him anywhere. He’s twice your height, with lousy taste in clothes, a nasty orange moustache, an evil laugh you can hear a mile off – and he smells of eggs. Rotten ones.’

‘Robotnik,’ says Sonic. ‘I knew it! I wonder what crazy scheme he’s cooked up this time.’

What question does Sonic ask Boombox next?

‘What are you doing here?’     Turn to 46
‘Why are you wearing robot armour?’     Turn to 26
‘Have you seen our friends?’     Turn to 106

Image

Sonic has already asked Boombox what he is doing here and why he is wearing robot armour, so he will next ask him if he has seen Sonic and Tails’ friends.

106
‘Your friends? You mean other animals from outside, like you?’ says Boombox. ‘I’ve seen one or two, but the robots have got them all. I don’t know why. Do not meddle in the ways of robots, as my old dad used to say, for they are subtle and quick on the draw. Come to think of it, I know where one of them is – a rabbit. He’s trapped in the same room as my girlfriend Dancer. Could you help me free her?’

If Sonic and Tails agree to help, turn to 123. If they’d rather continue questioning the rat, they can ask why he’s in the city (turn to 46), who’s running the city (turn to 229), or why he’s wearing robot armour (turn to 26).

Image

Sonic and Tails have already asked Boombox every possible question, so they will agree to help.

Image

123
The three set off down one of Boombox’s tunnels, with Sonic and Tails following the rat. The tunnel twists and turns and finally ends at an opening high in the wall of a large room. Boombox, the first to look into the room, gasps aloud. ‘They’re in there,’ he says, ‘but the machine’s started, so you’ll have to work fast or they’ll be mangled.’

Sonic and Tails look through the opening. The room is filled with a huge machine with whirring gears, moving conveyor belts and thumping jackhammers. Tied to one of the belts are two animals: their friend Johnny Lightfoot the rabbit, and a female rat. Both are shrieking in terror as the belt moves towards the gaping mouth of the machine, which is making a hideous grinding noise. Suspended from the ceiling is a large grapple, which is moving to and fro across the room, picking up objects and moving them around. There is also a loading platform on the floor, between Boombox’s hole and the machine. Sonic can jump down onto the floor (turn to 272), onto the grapple (turn to 219) or onto the loading platform (turn to 243), or he can ask Boombox if he should know anything about the room (turn to 260).

I don't think this is the time to ask for questions. I think the grapple will have the best chance of letting us rescue them in our particular idiom.

Votes acknowledged; jumping down onto the grapple.

219
Without hesitating, Sonic leaps for the grapple as it glides towards the huge machine. It’s a beautiful jump, perfectly timed, and he grabs the claws of the device as they swing past. No problem! Sonic can either smash the grapple (turn to 191) or hang onto it (turn to 286).

I was imagining hanging from it and grabbing them as it swings over. So I think hang on (286).

The grapple grabs Sonic, lifts him up and carries him across the room. He’s wriggling frantically, but nothing he does will release the machine’s tenacious grip. The grapple carries him to a funnel on top of the machine – and drops him in. It’s dark inside the machine and the noise is deafening. Sonic is pushed, poked and buffeted by bits of metal and cogs until he almost forgets who he is. Hedgehogs don’t normally stand for this sort of treatment! Does Sonic burst out of the machine with a super-sonic spin attack (turn to 177), or does he wait to see what happens (turn to 95)?
