Campaign Record: The Sky Is Falling

Post by Koumei »

So, I started running another campaign, one that will be focused largely on exploration - and as such, it needs a recent calamity that means maps need to be redrawn and there are things worth exploring. It began with a fairly basic rundown of the world: you have your normal spherical planet sort of deal, then a few km up from there, you have a small number of continent-sized islands floating in the air, with floating rivers connecting them. Another few km up, you have Australia-sized islands, with less land, a bit more water, but also bigger gaps for light to get through. Another few km up, you have islands the size of most European, African, South-East Asian or South American countries. Again, even more water, but even bigger gaps. And another layer up from there, the islands tend to be the size of islands that are just "off the coast of a country", more water, more space.

So with the game set on the Australia layer, this means they usually have some degree of shade such that Drow etc. can live on the surface - which is good given you can't just keep digging down infinitely deep for your Underdark. You have the shadows of other islands, and you have light filtered through layers of water. Islands on a given layer are interconnected, allowing for ship travel, but going between layers requires long-distance flight: it's not unheard of, but it's rare enough that you don't have standard trade routes.

The players consist of: a Dryad Tree Speaker, a Xill that will later become a Moral Guide, a Lesser Cansin Conduit of Carceri, a Human Wizard/Eldritch Knight, a "basically whatever those dumb evil human things from BoVD are, but reflavoured" Fire Mage/Hell Rider and a Human Spirit Shaman/Stormcaster.

The first adventure was a pretty standard one designed just as the set-up to the cataclysm, which is in fact going to be so recent that it hasn't quite happened yet. They were hired by a Svirfneblin alchemist (of the "sells tanglefoot bags" variety) named Shnivnorshnipdip, to check out his cellar, because he recently discovered a problem: some tunnelling seemed to happen, and then he hired some people to check it out and they never returned, and a terrifying undead emerged – something which by his description sounds a lot like a wight. He managed to destroy it by using a lot of his crafted goods – alchemist oil, holy water, smoke bombs and tanglefoot bags. But now he has questions of “How many are there? What else is there? How did they get there? What are their plans? What happened to the other people, and can their remains be retrieved and put to rest? Was this done without council planning permission and am I in danger of being fined for these tunnels?”

So the party went down there and discovered a giant ant lion. A lot of the critters I placed were sort of placed with the idea of "they'll only attack if the players are looking for a fight. Deciding actually you do want to fight isn't enough to get a sudden surprise round, but for most of these things you can absolutely choose nonviolence." As such, they fed it a goodberry, using Speak With Animals (because it's not a vegetable or a mineral, so it must be an animal, fuck you D&D classifications). It didn't have much useful info, but gave them an envelope that used to be in the hand of someone it ate. It's just communication between two wealthy people, talking about a trade route and a possible jamboree or jubilee or tambourine or something.

Going down, they find themselves in a big cavern network, which was not mentioned, and there are even small bags and boxes of "stuff" stashed about. They encounter a wraith that has no interest in talking about the situation, but also has no interest in rolling high enough to hit with a touch attack, so it must be one of those useless WoD wraiths. 2-3 player characters lack any means to hit it as well, which is funny, but it is re-killed with fire. Later on, they discover wights, who turn out to be the previously-hired adventurers (minus one, who was carrying the letter). They still remember their prior existence and don't want to be eternal undead monsters, and ask to be killed so they can later on be resurrected. They also write down messages for their next of kin, so they can be notified in the meantime what with Resurrection not being the kind of thing 6th level characters can do.

The party also find an otyugh, and feed it, so it wanders off. Goodberry has so far been the MVP of this adventure. And that's when a sudden earthquake hits, and the place is in danger of caving in. They rush up to the cellar, find that new tunnel walls have been made, such as into a sewer, fires have started, and the stairs that lead out have caved in, but also water is leaking down so maybe the fires won't spread. It doesn't matter as they summon water elementals to put the fires out, then use wood shaping / etherealness to escape to the surface...

Where they discover the sky is falling. A huge amount of water from an air river has just fallen and smashed into the town, damaging buildings, but the earthquake was caused by a ship falling a few km and hitting the town. That's right: BOAT WENT BINTED.

Image

I'm not a physicist so I don't know how bad it is when big things fall these distances. I mean I don't even know the mass of a ship, let alone what velocity it hits. So it was just "local earthquake".

And that is when they see in the distance, probably too far away to see*, an island falling from the sky and smashing into their continent in the distance. The session ends there, and next session they get to see how far the devastation reaches locally, check on things like the locals and "the nearby forest which has the dryad character's life tree" and figure out to what extent I started with a premise of "boat goes binted" and worked backwards to make a narrative for it.

*So sticking with the Australia analogy, the party are roughly in Coober Pedy, and an island roughly the size of Java or Cuba has fallen some 5-ish kilometres, hitting somewhere around Dubbo or Orange. The only Earth Impact calculator things I could find were all focused on asteroids/meteors, which tend to be a lot smaller but also move a lot faster, I'm pretty sure things like First Impact or Tunguska were moving at speeds where you talk about it in tenths of the speed of light. And results from those things suggested it could be anywhere between "750x Tsar Bomba, and nuclear explosions are actually pretty small on a planetary scale, you probably wouldn't even see the explosion from this distance" to "your whole continent is obliterated". If other people have better calculations for this sort of thing, I'll look, but as it is, it seems I have freedom to decide how bad it is.

Session 2: Things That Sting

So first, the party checked out the boat that went binted. The sailors were dead, the ship wasn't going anywhere any time soon, but there was a bunch of cargo. They made sure to get paid, and check that the town wasn't going to collapse.

Next they went to the forest to make sure the dryad's home tree was all right. It was, and they also helped calm all the giant bees down by creating a big sugar syrup glob for them to eat. They also talked with the Thriaee (bee-people monsters) there, and convinced them to set up a sort of community militia to protect the woods.

After this, the party headed East to have a look at the damage caused, checking cities on the way - after all, the closer they get to ground zero, the worse the damage will be. And once they reach the city of Dunscon, they find there's panic, and the town guards are largely running about helping repair buildings, but still the large fortifications are intact, indeed the markets are enclosed within an old fortress that no longer saw military use. It was a sort of... SUPER market.

They did some buying and selling, and also were hired to go *capture* stirges, from around the butcher out of town, so they can be used to infest a basement, sort of like the inverse of the standard level 1 tavern quest. The trickiest part of this turned out to be "keeping the stirges alive", because one nearly died of fire when it bit an on-fire player character, and another fell helpless to magic, but then other nearby animals tried to eat it. Still, they eventually succeeded, and thus ends the side-quest.

Session 3: Sand and Caves

The party continued Eastward until they found a small farm that was still being ravaged by dust storms. Oh and also undead. They fought some forlorn husks and a sand devil, but the real challenge was a plain old sand storm. Still, they prevailed, saving the few remaining farmers, and continued about their merry way... where they found the next city was actually destroyed.

They haven't entered the city ruins yet, but the approach, where it touches the nearby lake used for fishing, has been damaged quite significantly. There was even a kraken trapped due to the rocks falling from the sky and the ground breaking apart and shifting, so they rescued it and chatted via telepathy for a bit, before checking some of the nearby caves.

It turns out even the caves aren't safe, who would have known having rocks above you in an earthquake is bad. Local bandits or smugglers had tried hiding there, but were eaten by a Sabite, a "friend of fish". So a were-fish sort of creature. However, the Sabite was pinned beneath a stalactite that had fallen, and quite badly hurt, so the party saved him. He offered some information about the area, and how only the Sabites are good cooperative friendly sorts (who sometimes eat people?), whereas the crocodilian Kairites and eelish Unites are all a bunch of assholes.

Next session? Probably exploring deeper in the caves, and checking out the ruins of the town, too!

The party managed to broker a sort of peace deal between the three communities, and made their way out, with no intention to visit them again. They instead checked out the nearby town that had been ravaged by the shockwave and dust storm. There were a great many giant bugs that attacked, spitting acid and being really unsettled by recent events!

When they finished destroying the bugs, they checked one of the bug tunnels, and found that it had partially collapsed and the egg sacs and been smashed by the earthquake. And so they kept searching, and encountered a giant evil goose, by which I mean "a giant goose". It's supposed to be a vulture but I had a goose token so that's what we're going with. It told them about how one of the buildings was a consecrated temple, so naturally they desecrated the place because that's what you do. And that's pretty much where the session ended.

A very special episode

We all enjoy some fun and games here, but sometimes the fun stops and there's a serious side. And that happens when people fail Fortitude Saves.

So anyway, the party finished desecrating the temple of Subaru, then looted the rest of the destroyed town, before letting the evil goose, I mean the completely normal goose, lead them back to the tower it was created at. The upper layers were destroyed, but there were underground layers! The wizard was big on being a Dungeon Keeper.

They stepped into a large room that had goblins led by a hobgoblin, and orcs led by a tanarukk.

"If you want to avoid combat, you have one chance to say something here."

The Charm Person attempt failed, meaning they had the opportunity for violence! And then only a single enemy, Big Douglas, did anything at all to the party... he killed two player characters, because he was growing angrier as he took damage, everyone sort of acknowledged what abilities the enemy has because we know it's a Kaelik Barbarian, and then a bunch of them stood right next to it and piled more damage in to give it a bigger bonus so it could kill them with a death effect.

The breakdown of blame is as follows: 20% Kaelik just because "oh well, you wrote the class, we get to blame you for it", 40% how the core rules work with [Death] effects and things, 35% the people going all Leroy Jenkins (and rolling poorly, you can just roll better guys!) and 5% to Big Douglas himself. Watame Koumei did nothing wrong.

So after the party killed the remaining foes, they did some more scouting, then went back to town to have the fallen brought back to life at the temple of Kiwawa the phoenix. There might have been a learning experience, but we didn't learn.

Back on Track

(The game was a bit short this time, because I started late due to voting.)

The party went back to town so that one person could be raised, and the other reincarnated in a burst of flame, now as more of a fire-demon sort of thing. They rested up, and then went back... where they discovered the sleeping troll and ogres from last time had woken up, eaten the corpses of the goblins and orcs, then gone back to sleep. So the party killed those giants and continued downstairs.

They met a very talkative red dragon, who lamented everyone else existing in the dungeon, which he insisted he owned - "don't touch anything, everything here is mine, I'm very rich you know". Just like the last very rich person they met. He directed them North to the torture chambers, where a shadow-clad individual, perhaps a Shade or a Shadar-Kai or a Dark Stalker or a Kyton (PF class of outsiders, not the 3.5 chain devil) was resting in an iron maiden. After some discussion, the shadowy figure led them to another room with a giant vice designed for crushing people - but alas it was blocked! They needed someone to help. Meanwhile, an invisible Shae was following them from another room, ready to push them in as soon as they unclogged it... shame about "See Invisible". So there was a Fairy Fire, a deep insult, and then violence. And both the shadow-kin died. Also the party unclogged the giant vice - someone had jammed a human arm, misc. gristle, a magic wand and bits of smashed badger inside the crank.

Downstairs, they encountered some knights who were very Northern, like proper Yorkshire Northern. They were hoping someone could help free them from the accursed place, but instead the party gave them a pep talk to convince them "You can absolutely kill the dragon!" Now if they listened to the advice about not all standing adjacent to it, that might have been true. But in the end, the dragon killed them after they dealt significant damage, and the party finished the dragon off, just to tie off loose ends more than anything else. Also so that they had a dragon soul trapped in a thinaum ring.

The party have cleared out the dungeon now. They discovered a temple of bones, dedicated to the spider queen Haachama, and somehow managed to communicate with her drow followers, despite the followers being ardent believers in the language of Haachama. This was a bloodless conversation, and whereas earlier the warlocks explained that force effects open all of the dimensional magic locks, the drow were able to warn that there is one anomaly that mustn't be unlocked.

Next floor down, they met some hell hounds and a shadow mastiff, and chose not to go with violence. And it is here that they found the dimensionally-locked room, using magic missile to open it - and to open all the dimensional holes and storage in there, revealing a lot of junk treasure. Also some dimensional correspondence. The wizard seemed to have been in contact with someone else, receiving the following messages:

Congratulations on the construction of your new tower. It’s truly a crowning moment for every
wizard. We have begun the take-over operations for my land – war was clearly brewing, it was time
to begin properly. Should we prove victorious, I will be glad to open trade with you.

-

I would keep it sealed as is. If the storage is breached, get away and stay away – repeatedly send
disposable minions in with weak spells on them, until the effect ends. Worst case scenario, it might
collapse everything you created.

As for the war effort, magic has been of great use, although naturally there is a constant race to
out-do one another. Constant efforts to counter each other with new offensive and defensive
measures. Currently the opposition are relying on summoning to negate their casualties and
perhaps improve morale. A lot of fire elementals after we started using fireball barrages and walls
of fire. We might need to start using war machines to fire through walls of dispelling, bringing back
mundane weaponry to surprise them.

-

That has been known to happen, yes. I don’t know if securing their services is typically worth the
trouble, all I can suggest is constant flattery and bribery.

On my front, currently the proliferation of summoned creatures and similar is proving difficult to
deal with. Their forces are practically without number at this rate – casualties mean nothing if they
can simply be replenished. Is there a way to block conjuration altogether? Or some other means to
prevent this summoning on a large scale? Obviously one person with an anti-magic field or a
dismissal/dispel squad is of little use.

-

Your idea sounds perfect. Please make the contact so this can be done. I will pay the price to take
the summoning element from their army. Victory is guaranteed with this, and with control of the
entire land I will easily be able to repay your agent. I hope your situation with the dragon is
improving, they are temperamental at best.

-

What the fuck is happening?

-

There was a tesseract vault inside there, with an anomaly within, but they reshaped the wood of a catapult into a box surrounding it, just to make sure nobody opened it. "Do not dead open inside".

Finally, they continued Eastward, and actually made it to the landing point, where wraiths and shadows - unhappy memories of a small town shattered by the impact - attacked. And it is there, now at level eight, that things end for the week.

This week, the party explore upwards a little, met by some shouting: it turns out that a Marut - the enforcers of the finality of death - is hovering around a keep, demanding the undead in there be destroyed! So the party briefly conversed with them, before instead conversing with the devil inside who was raising the undead. The terms were all laid out in the contract, after all, that everybody in the keep belonged to him at the point of death. They traded a thinaun ring (containing the soul of a red dragon) for the soul of somebody who knew a lot, and in doing so gained some map information, knowledge of where magical munitions and ordinance were stored, and yes, information on the main war being fought.

Two city-alliance forces are at war for the entire island, both wanting control so that their archmages can use the islands for... something? Something worth fighting a war over, anyway!

And they already were aware that magic was being used a lot in these battles, and somebody had contacted "The Grandest Strategist" in order to have the magic killed. This seemed to happen roughly the same time the island fell. Weird, huh?

And now, well, there's a probably-abandoned vertical battlefield up there. And also multiple cities. And what of this Grandest Strategist, did they get killed in the aftermath of this?
