Gem Chosen (Magical Girl Transformation 3.x Class)

Post by deaddmwalking »

I was talking with someone online and they ended up asking how I might approach a character that has a transforming ability. I'd like to say it was because they saw the new He-Man movie preview, but it's really just that this is a standard trope, especially in Isekai anime. Some people like the idea of being a 'normal person', but still being able to contribute in D&D, and I think having a transformation ability makes that work. Alternatively, everyone knows that Fighters don't work without an artifact sword, but there's no guarantee you ever find one - baking one into the class addresses that issue. In any case, since I did the work of putting a sample class together, I didn't see any reason not to share it more widely.

Gem Chosen

Role
Some people are just ordinary - until they discover they have a special destiny. To pursue their destiny they are given the ability to become more than they ever expected to be. Looking deep within themselves they find they have a power that transfigures them from ordinary to extraordinary.

Class Features
All of the following are class features of the Gem Chosen.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency
A Gem Chosen is proficient with all simple and martial weapons. Gem Chosen are not proficient with any armor or shields. Armor provided as part of a class feature does not require proficiency and a Gem Chosen never suffers a penalty for its use.

Crystaline Fusion (Ex) A bonded soul is created when an intelligent magical gem fuses with another creature. The magical gem is invulnerable but exists symbiotically with its host creature; if the host dies, the gem ceases to function.

Radiant (Ex) At 1st level, a Gem Chosen chooses an elemental damage type (acid, cold, fire, lightning, or sonic). This choice determines what elemental damage type is associated with the Gem Chosen’s transformation. All spells with the associated sub-type from the Wiz/Sor spell list are added to the Gem Chosen’s spell list.

Spell Knowledge (Ex) A Gem Chosen knows a number of spells equal to a Sorcerer of her level, drawn from the Gem Chosen spell list. A Gem Chosen can only cast known spells while transformed (see Transformation, below). A Gem Chosen can use spell completion and spell-activation items without being transformed.

Transformation (Ex) The symbiotic relationship between a gem and the Gem Chosen allows for a quasi-magical transformation. The gem transforms into a weapon and armor and confers upon the Gem Chosen the ability to cast Arcane Spells from the Gem Chosen spell list. The weapon can appear as any weapon the Gem Chosen is proficient with, appropriate for their size or as two weapons if the Gem Chosen prefers. The weapon is formed from the crystal and cannot be sundered or disarmed. If a Gem Chosen chooses to drop her weapon it ceases to exist and she can reform it as a free action as long as she remains transformed. The Armor created by the Transformation provides an armor bonus equal to the Gem Chosen’s Charisma modifier plus one-third their Gem Chosen character level. Gem Chosen’s Charisma determines the highest level of spell she can cast, the DC to resist her spells, and bonus spells (as Sorcerer). A Transformation lasts for a number of rounds equal to the Gem Chosen’s class level plus her Constitution modifier. A Gem Chosen can initiate a Transformation a number of times per day equal to half her class level plus her Charisma modifier. Initiating a Transformation is a full-action at 1st level. Transformation requires only a mental action and can be performed even when paralyzed or held, but not when unconscious.

Weapon Augment (Su) At 2nd level a Gem Chosen’s weapon is considered magical and is treated as a +1 weapon. Additionally it does +1d6 elemental damage of the same type the Gem Chosen selected for the Radiant ability at 1st level (ie, a Gem Chosen that chose Fire would possess a weapon that acts as a flaming weapon). At 4th level the weapon is treated as a +2 elemental burst weapon (ie a Gem Chosen that chose Fire would possess a weapon treated as a +2 flaming burst weapon). At 6th level the weapon is treated as +3 and gains the Ghost Touch special property. At 8th level the weapon is treated as a +4 weapon and gains the Spell Storing special property. At 10th level the weapon is treated as a +5 weapon and gains the Keen special property. At 12th level the weapon gains the Defending special property. At 14th level the weapon gains the Speed special property. At 16th level the weapon gains the Brilliant Energy special property. At 18th level the weapon gains the Vorpal property. At 20th level, any successful hit with the weapon is automatically considered a critical threat.

Actualization (Ex) Beginning at third level, a Gem Chosen’s transformation becomes even more powerful, allowing them to augment their ability scores while transformed. They gain a +1 bonus to the attribute of their choice. Every three levels (6th, 9th, 12th, 15th, and 18th) the attribute bonus increases by +1 (to a maximum of +6) and they can choose an additional attribute to receive a bonus. At 18th level a Gem Chosen will have a +6 to all six attributes.

Armor Augment (Su) At 3rd level and every three levels thereafter, the armor created by the transformation improves. At 3rd level the armor provides elemental resistance 10 to the elemental damage type chosen by the Gem Chosen for their Radiant ability. At 6th level the armor gains Light Fortification. At 9th level the elemental resistance provided by the armor increases to 20 for the elemental damage type chosen by the Gem Chosen for their Radiant ability and 10 for all other elemental energy types. At 12th level the Fortification improves to Moderate Fortification. At 15th level the Elemental Resistance provided by the armor increases to 30 for the elemental damage type chosen by the Gem Chosen for their Radiant ability and 20 for all other elemental energy types. At 18th level the Fortification provided by the armor improves to Heavy Fortification.

Deflecting Armor (Ex) Beginning at 4th level, a Gem Chosen’s armor applies the full armor bonus to all attack types including touch attacks and attacks from a brilliant energy weapon.

Faithful Companion (Ex) At 5th level a Gem Chosen gains a cohort as if they had taken the Leadership feat. The cohort provided is always two levels lower than the Gem Chosen’s level regardless of leadership score. If a Faithful Companion is slain or dismissed, the Gem Chosen will gain a new one after seven days.

Swift Change (Ex) As a Gem Chosen becomes more familiar with the transformation process they can complete the transformation in less time. At 5th level the action to transform is reduced from a full action to a standard action; at 10th level it is reduced from a standard to a Move; at 15th level it is reduced from a Move action to a Swift action. At 20th level initiating a transformation can be done as an Immediate Action even on another character’s turn.

Liberating Transformation (Ex) Beginning at 7th level, when a Gem Chosen initiates a transformation they gain the benefits of a Freedom of Movement spell for the duration of their Transformation. The Gem Chosen can choose to imbue a number of allies equal to her Charisma modifier within 30’ with this ability when she transforms.

Faithful Servitor (Ex) Beginning at 8th level the bond between a Gem Chosen and her faithful companion is enhanced; her faithful companion can initiate a transformation to gain the armor and weapon features as if they were a Gem Chosen of their character level. A faithful companion also gains the Radiant feature and may select the same elemental damage type or a different elemental damage type.

Improved Faithful Servitor (Ex) Beginning at 11th level, the faithful companion’s transformation ability improves; they now gain the improved ability scores from the Actualization ability as if they were a Gem Chosen of their character level.

Perfect Servitor (Ex) At 15th level, the bond between a faithful companion and the Gem Chosen improves again; now when the faithful companion initiates a transformation they gain spells and spells known as if they were a Gem Chosen of their character level.

Healing Transformation (Ex) At 13th level, each time the Gem Chosen initiates a Transformation, she gains the benefit of a Heal spell as though cast by a cleric of her Gem Chosen class level.

Purifying Transformation (Ex) Beginning at 17th level the Gem Chosen is cured of all injuries and afflictions as though the Wish spell was used. The Gem Chosen can apply this benefit to a number of allies equal to her Charisma modifier within 30’ with this ability when she transforms.

Re: Gem Chosen (Magical Girl Transformation 3.x Class)

Issues in order of importance:

1) They should be able to cast spells when not in transformation. I know you don't want that because your theory was "He-man, being a normal guy when not transforming" but most cases like this people can in fact instill a lesser version of their magic without transforming.

Game mechanically, that's practically necessary. The first issue happens at level 1, when you want to cast Detect Magic, but then you realize you have to use up one of your precious daily transmutations just to check for magical items, and then you decide not to use it. But it gets way worse when you start trying to cast Major Creation (and probably some other stuff) and you notice that in fact, all your casts Flatline because you lose the ability to cast spells in the middle of the casting time of the spell.

You COULD separate out all the spells into "the ones you can use outside of transformation like Break Enchantment or Detect Magic" vs "the ones you can't, like Fireball" and figure out where you want Dispel Magic in the list, but that's a lot of work and makes the class more confusing to a player when it already has a lot going on. Probably easier to just say "they can cast spells out of transformation" and accept that sometimes people open up a fight with a Fireball and then transform next or whatever, but they cast Detect Magic without transforming.

2) You forgot to write a BAB, presumably you meant full, and if you didn't, I recommend you do in fact give them full, even though you did give Tensor's Transformation. I don't think it's worth asking people to track two different BABs at any point, and the class is probably fine with full BAB.

3) I think the armor bonus is honestly just too big. Scales off of too many different things and above the Base AC of any armor that anyone else can have pretty quickly then goes up from there while still scaling with everything else that gives AC bonuses.

4) I think the leadership stuff is bad in the normal way leadership is bad, but then also giving them too much of this class, but whatever.
