Anyone still play this? I just started recently. The interface is kinda poor (though not awful), but the gameplay is utterly fabulous. It doesn't even look outdated because a bunch of people went and made super-high-res replacement textures for everything. So high-res that apparently 512 mb of video memory isn't enough and it occasionally causes a bit of slowdown on my newer, somewhat high-end machine.
I haven't played much yet (Bumming around Seyda Neen right now; I cleared out that nearby cave and am going to look at the sunken ship before I go to the city). I do have a lot of mods though -- that's one of the game's best strengths, its extensive modability. (And I just removed one -- Morrowind Comes Alive -- for being a good idea but implemented in a retarded way.) Anyone have mod suggestions? Or just want to talk about the game in general?
My character is a Rogue/Mage type. I haven't decided if he's an asshole yet or not, but he is pragmatic at least. He let the slaves go because they might prove good contacts in the future and there was no reason not to.

Dude, that is some bad crack you've gotten your hands on. There were months of my life that dissappeared in a hazy blur due to that game. A few hints
be to be warry of guys who follow you as they are slow and get hooked up on the scenery or get themselves killed as you run forward of them.
Mark and recall are the 2 best spells.
There is a mod to get rid of the pteradactyl things, you might want to use it after a while as they get annoying in the high levels.
Look up the skill selection leveling strategy so you can max out your leveling potential.
When in doubt mod yourself something you need using the editor. I always gave myelf a pair of pants that gave me an extra 100 or so carrying capacity, a bit of jump and enough night vision that I was never screwed because of the dark. Just drop it in an empty room in the editor so you can take care of some of the annoyances which come up in the game while not really effecting the game play. It's a little cheating but I don't think it's serious
And if you ever get bored they say oblivion is even better

Ugh. The shimmering latex robes were pretty awful, as is running (or should I say hopping) around with your arms sticking straight out like a zombie.
But I still lost almost an entire summer to that game.
[Edit] The game can break down at the edges. Making a minimum duration/max camouflage spell allows for near-unlimited stealing at low levels. [/Edit]

Two things:
Your stat increases are based on skill increases. If you didn't pick the right set of skills as your main, you will suck and not be able to max stats.
Also, there's this dude somewhere. Killing him before you are supposed to renders the game unfinishable.

In this moment, I am Ur-phoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my int score.
I already put a 'portable hole' mod in because seriously that's one thing I can't live without, cheating or no.
I just got attacked by some Dark Brotherhood dude out in the wilderness. I iced that sucker. Finally, a decent set of light armor!
I realized the skills thing after I already made my character. However, a quick trip through the console to reset which of my skills counted as major/moderate (didn't reset the skill ratings they already had though) fixed that right up. I didn't feel bad about breaking the roleplay because I was like 1 day in anyway.
I've installed a companion mod, Baron Partners (it's CM Partners with bugfixes and features I don't care about), that uses a follower AI that's not so retarded. If I ever care to get a follower.
Morrowind Comes Alive did the same thing, but it also did a lot of retarded things to make Morrowind seem 'less static' (spawning NPCs in various places), but in my mind the way they did it was totally retarded. Every time I left the Seyda Neen cave and came back, there would be 2-3 new NPCs there. Even if I just open and shut the door. I opened the editor and diked that shit out, but there's probably 50 more places that are just as dumb.

Get oblivion. It's so much better than morrowind that it isn't even funny. I really won't touch morrowind with a ten foot pole, but damned if I'll let you get a turn at oblivion. Oblivion is really that much better if you have the specs to run it. Just get a mod so people don't look so ugly (really, are there any pretty people in the base game?).
Since monster stats are set to your level and your stats increase slower than theirs, it is to your advantage to never level. Your skills are essentially not tied to the level system, so don't worry there.
Basically, my opinion was "like an MMO, but with none of the people."
Ps. Set autorun and face the wall. Then in RL, go to bed for the night. Wake up with massive skill increase.

I never had a problem with monster difficulty after 10th level or so. At 50th I was killing anything in the basic game. One key is advancement planning. You've got to work out want are major, minor and secondary skills based on what will give you the most stat increases each level. I'm sure there is good write up on the best method somewhere, I haven't played in 5 years so I'm a tad rusty.K wrote:Since monster stats are set to your level and your stats increase slower than theirs, it is to your advantage to never level. I also remember blasting sucking as far as spellcasting, I never played a character who did anything more than utility spells. any elemental attacks I would attach to weapons.
Another tip was to make sure you don't carry around the best soul crystals until you are ready to hunt golden saints. you need a golden saint soul in the best crystal to give permanent enchantments and there are only so many crystals.

Yeah, Morrowind rocks. Play Oblivion afterwards, it's a better if smaller game.
Mods I use:
Morrowind Graphics Extender
Morrowind Script Extender
Run Like The Wind
Improved Teleportation
Toggle Sneak
and Wrye Mash to make sense of them all.
I'll just go ahead and suggest Morowind Mythic Mods. Awesome site with almost every Mod for Morrowind ever.

Oh Morrowind...I still play it from time to time, just to remember what it's like to lose bits of my life without paying 15 bucks a month for the privilege.
I'm with you guys on everyone being ugly, though. I found some great face packs for various races, and even a mod that distributed them on NPCs all throughout the game. Made it much nicer to look at.

It's like NWN; awesome gameplay (for its time), horrible characters. Half-Orcs were the worst. Needed some Korean artists in that Canadian team.Arcane-surge wrote:I'm with you guys on everyone being ugly, though. Not to stereotype but I have yet to see many good looking humanoid figures in 3D Western games. Yes, that includes WoW too, although Morrowind came close to decent.
Ugliness has its merits though even if you can't NOT make an ugly face.
I made a spitting image of Kain, with sneers and skin tone, on my girlfriend's computer.

She prefers the catgirl mod I found on 4chon months ago, lingerie and all... but indeed, that's outside of the basic game.

Three words:
Warhammer: Age of Reckoning.
It's got both awesome and realistic character models.

Finally, WoW had good models once.
Back in Beta and before all of the male models got fucked up when they "hulked" them out, but didn't maintain proper proportions.
That's why WoW males tend to look like popeye. Except undead, but they're bones, so w/e. Original male Tauren also looked more "minotaur-like" and less.... tree trunk with a head on the front.

Yes but it's.... Warhammer. Still, better than NWN2.
D&D Online looks great in the polygons but it's pay-to-play... -10 Respect for that.
It's possible and I've seen it, but the joints are a sacrifice to make for the sake of a more humanoid figure.
Also, could you explain exactly how Capcom has better models than... well.. everything?
Is it the textures, the lighting, the resolution, the expertise in programming motion, or something else?

Instead of a Black & White approach with stretching bitmaps over armature (pardon me, didn't get 3D classes in my last degree... weren't offered) that tend to cause stretching and distortion when the model is posed, they could have added separate pieces more like in Odin Sphere.Judging__Eagle wrote: Finally, WoW had good models once.

It's not really "streching" that's the problem, it's that they just grabbed the vertex points of the forearms and just scaled them up, but didn't bother to make the forearms taper properly down to the wrist, making them look fucked up.
They could have bulked up the models, but they did so in a haphazard manner.

Play that instead.
My favorite game of Morrowind was when I played as a drunker boxer. I stocked up on the plus 50 str minus 50 int liquor in the first town, chugged a bunch of them before battle, and then just destroyed anything that messed with me.

Oh fuck you Fallout. FUCK YOU. Wasted my Halloween, waiting for my girlfriend to finish killing giant ants for 3 hours while I begged her to quit and play Halo, Gears of War, ANY shitty multiplayer with me rather than go glassy eyed at the same bleak landscapes.cthulhu wrote:Stop playing Morrowind stat.

Killing ants. Over. And over.
Then the leveling up.
Then the talking.
Then more killing.
That slow-motion gun sound... like a hammer.. hell... to my head.
No, fvck you. Or rather, fvck her better next time.

She was ill. Gallbladder failed, didn't have much stamina for, well, anything. Better now but recovering.
It's also partially her unwillingness to play the aforementioned multiplayer games with me since:
1. Gears of War is shit multiplayer, and IMO not much better in story mode.
2. She hates Halo. We rode around a desert with the one-wheel bikes and big G. I. Joe fortress-tank-thing but that was a year ago.
3. I made her play Brawl and Wii bowling with me a week before. She hates the SSB series, prefers 1-player RPGs (Morrowind!
) and solitary FPS, although Wii sports are fine.. I have yet to meet anyone that hates them, really.
As the saying goes I count my blessings but sometimes, sometimes, wish I had found someone that liked a wider variety of multiplayer games.
