Food you shouldn't eat, but you do anyway?

Post by Lago PARANOIA »

I have to confess, I'm a huge fan of oatmeal. But it doesn't agree with me; there's something about the texture that makes me want to throw up when I finish eating it. So many a morning I go through the usual ritual of knowing that those 5 minutes of pleasure I get from eating oatmeal and bananas are going to be nullified by 30 minutes of feeling mildly ill when I'm done. But I can't help it.

Also, I love tuna fish. Right out of a can, in a casserole, mixed in with pasta, on a sandwich, awesome. But I also like it salty and sour enough to suck out all of your bodily fluids, so I end up dumping in a bunch of lemon salt and always stir in olives and pickles. So that can't be good.

I like bacon and eggs, too. For any time of the day. I then made one of the biggest mistakes of my life by looking at the nutritional facts on one of the egg cartons; do you know that just one these fucken things have like 70% of your recommended daily cholestoral? Damn!

I have to admit, I do love some bacon, extra crisp. I don't get it much when I'm not home since the military facilities oven bake it and it ends up limp and swimming in grease.

Pizza is another habit I've been trying to cut back on. I'm looking around for healthier versions since Dominoes has ruptured my guts everytime as of late.

This sounds like a food sensitivity. There are a surprising number of people who seem to be addicted to foods that their body rejects.

The standard complaint against this would be too much sodium and watch out for mercury. My mom (nutritionist) would tell you to make sure there's not a lot of preservatives and MSG in the lemon salt, pickles, and olives, and balance that out with a lot of high potassium foods.

We eat "breakfast" a lot - usually for dinner. You have more to worry about from the bacon than the eggs.

My diet is full of things that the stereotypical medical professional would advise against. I don't care. I strive to make every bite count - nutritionally speaking.

And I don't care what anyone says; dark chocolate is a health food.

When I cook meat I always burn it. It's more carcinogenic that way, but it also tastes way better.

I've got chronic heartburn, so pretty much anything acidic is a bad idea for me....

Tea, coffee, soda, pizza, etc. but pretty much everything I like is acidic, so...

Bacon sandwiches with a unhealthy dollop of ketchup. Cheese sandwiches with no salad. Pasta, peas and a liberal coating of cheese. Cheese. Large packets of Doritos. Fried mushrooms with Gorgonzola. Chicken burgers with fried mushrooms and cheese. Bread and chocolate and hazelnut spread.

All of the above with some kind of cola, coffee, or tea. Always black.
Face it. Today will be as bad a day as any other.

I really hate it when they do that. They end up layering the bacon in sheets in the damn pan so the grease not only can't be drained from the pan but the lower stuff is swimming in it.

When I was in the Nav I only got bacon if it was cooking for awhile and it was the stuff at the top of the pan. Otherwise, ew. I can't remember how many trees I killed using those paper napkins to soak up the grease.

I have a weird sensitivity to a few random things including apples, causing agonising stomach pain followed by a rapid need to evacuate my bowels. I was worried for a while that I had developed a stomach ulcer and was already preparing a poetic death speech. But it seems to just be a random food sensitivity, the pain being caused by my digestive system thinking it needs to hurry and working too fast.

But I still enjoy apples, apple juice and apple pies.

Then there's chocolate. I hear it's bad for you. I still go through crazy amounts of it (not so much these days, because I don't want to poison the dog and have a bad habit of always sharing food with him). Oh, and ice cream. I would gladly consume a take-home pack of Cold Rock ice cream per day.

Hell, I've even developed a bit of a Coke habit (the drink, not the powder) these days, despite knowing just how bad the stuff really is.

Heh. Sweet tea.

Although I do have a sideline on soda in general.

My consumption's probably going to go down; the university has switched over to Pepsi products pretty much exclusively. Nothing against Pepsi, but my favorite sodas--Barqs, Dr. Pepper, and Coca-Cola--are on the Coke side of the line. So when I get out of a test and want a soda as a treat while I wait for the bus, I automatically think one of those three.

Then I got to the machine and found to my disappointment that they'd somehow replaced the machines in the space of a day, and raised the price.

I love, love, LOVE cherry cheesecake. I would punch out a five year old for it. But sadly, it doesn't love me back. After a piece or two I get horrible heartburn for hours. But so worth it.

For a while, I was very fond of peppermint tea sweetened to the point that it was better described as mint syrup. Sometimes I'd leave it to sit in a canteen for a week or so before I remembered to drink it, but the sugar was concentrated enough to kill the mold/microbes that might develop otherwise.

Now I settle with buying a pound or so of dried pineapple slices every couple months. Cheaper than candy, and probably healthier too. Still more sugar than I probably need.

Coca-cola and Ice Breaks. Ice Breaks being the choice coffe flavoured milk of geeks around here. Sure its reduced fat milk and has less sugar than most flavoured milk. Its still a shit load of sugar, fat and caffine dissolved in water.

Then again, I live in America, and therefore have not had any chocolate at all that wasn't made from rotten milk. (Seriously, when Hershey invented his method of making chocolate, he found he had to add much more sugar than in chocolate before that. they found out recently by analyzing the process that the milk turns sour and starts to rot during the process he invented.)

I eat a lot of fatty foods. However, I don't eat a large amount of carbs when I'm not working out. My cholesterol is a bit high, but other than that I'm doing alright.

I tend to work out pretty hard for a few weeks, then take a week or two where I just do light activity to recuperate. The weeks I work out hard, I really need to eat carbs because I just can't get enough energy out of fats, and getting energy from proteins is inefficient and just as likely to cannibalize my own muscles than actually use the proteins in my digestive system.

It's called "not having a choice". You can't get chocolate in America that isn't either made by Hershey (seriously, they now own all the major chocolate compabies), or isn't made by the same processes.

Well, technically you do have a choice, you can choose not to eat chocolate at all. But if you haven't known anything better, then you don't notice as much.

Not true at all. I get Lindt all the time, from my corner store, and that's neither Hershey-owned nor uses their process. Neither is Godiva, which is also readily available. Also, there are local small-business chocolatiers who make their chocolate from scratch.

So either you live in a crappy town, or you haven't actually looked that hard for an alternative.

Heck, Hershey doesn't make all milk-process chocolate. Their 'high end' products have a higher proportion of cocoa butter in them than european style chocolates.

And no, the milk doesn't sour. There's no living organisms in it when they're making the chocolate, I don't know where you heard that shit.

PS, careful about Lindt; they licensed there name to an American company so there's some truly horrible things out there calling themselves 'Lindt' chocolates. Make sure it was actually made is switzerland or germany (the dark chocolates or truffles generally are; the hearts and novelties may not)

Dark chocolate is defined as being free from milk. Milk chocolate is not a health food. Dark chocolate is. The darker the better.

There is no chocolate that they make that I like. I'm not even a big fan of Scharffen Berger or Dagoba.

Seconded. We have a couple of local companies that are good - Dilettante and Theo chocolates - and Lindt (makers of Ghirardelli), Godiva, and Guittard are all passable chocolate. But again, I don't eat milk chocolate at all.

Scharffen Berger is the least vile of their products - I actually would rather eat Scharffen Berger than Ghirardelli, personally (Ghirardelli tastes like wax in addition to not tasting good; Scharffen Berger just doesn't taste good). Scharffen Berger also has a much cooler name as it was co-opted by my son and morphed into his nickname, Eagor Scarffenberger.

If Ghirardelli tastes like wax, it's too old. I don't like their milk chocolate; they use a toasted milk which smells like burnt milk to me; but I love their cooking materials and chocolate for drinking...

...Of course, I wouldn't eat it if it weren't for the fact that it was a local supplier; I tend to go with local when I can, tho I'm blessed with many high-end sources out here I don't have to worry about getting chocolate that was air-freighted from somewhere since it was turned from beans to confection.
