Armpit Hair
So I gotta ask the people who are attracted to men. Should armpit hair be left to grow wild and free, trimmed, stubbly, or completely gone?

While I'm not asking for a manicured lawn of armpit hair, if it's so long that you can see tufts of it sticking out when your arms are by your side when not wearing a shirt, it's too long.
I'm not a big fan of the totally shorn trend, either. It reminds me of baby Majin Buu. I don't know why.

My ex tried to get me to shave my armpits. Also, I have stray chest hairs that she would bug me about to shave. Which she would yank out until I stopped taking off my shirt in front of her until she promised to stop doing that.

Trimmed pits (rather than shaved which I've nevr done) tend to smell less but I find I get sweat stains on my shirts faster. My fiancee is constantly bitching about the slightest body odor so it did seem to help a bit.

Hair needs to be tended to. And if you have body hair, it needs to be washed and dealt with so you don't build up stinky oils and bacteria. I'm mean, totally.
But I'll puke on you no matter how clean shaven if you're not just plain clean.
It always surprised me how much better my homeless friends smelled than some guys/gals I worked with.

Hair definitely needs to be take care of. Especially the longer it gets. I seriously have to alternate between several bottles of stuff to keep down the residue that builds up in your hair from using the same shampoo every day.
For a large part of my life I've refused to deal with "haircare" bullshit and either shaved my head or buzzed it and cleaned my scalp with soap.
Now I've got 2 different shampoos, 2 conditioners, 1 anti-dandruff shampoo and some leave-in conditoner. It feels ridiculous, but its the only way I get hair that I can actually comb*, and that doesn't get filled up with residue from only using one type of shampoo or conditioner.
It seems like a big deal (and well, you get into a habit eventually), but the results are noticeable, and I understand how much work girls put into maintaining a long head of hair. On the other hand, I know a girl who can tie knots in her hair, then shake her head, and the knots will undo themselves.
*:(my hair tangles itself pretty easy and I have to use 'straightening//smoothing' shampoo/conditioner if I expect to run even an afro pick through my hair)

Seriously, hairdressers tell you that so you'll buy more shampoo. If you are using good shampoo, you won't have residue problems.
If you notice any difference, it's purely a placebo effect.

Nah, it's legitimately true. It's not residue of the shampoo but of you. The thing is that different shampoos dissolve different things, and your body keeps regrowing and getting covered in filth every day. If you use the same shampoo over and over again whatever it left behind will keep getting left behind day after day and gradually building up.
You should be able to fight that with just a single extra shampoo that you switch off with every few days. However, some people have dandruff, which is an interesting case where the dandruff shampoos themselves actually damage your skin, so if you use them too many days in a row you can get scalp scabs. Dealing with that actually can run into quite complex routines of dandruff scrubbing and moisturizing shampoo.
In general, there are two dermatological problems: It's dry (moisturize it) or it's wet (dry it out). But the scalp is covered with hair so it can also be shedding and too thin - and it can genuinely be all four of those things at the same time because it's kind of lot of surface area.
But if more than 4 different shampoos are being used, I'm genuinely skeptical.

I worked as a receptionist in a hair salon for a year, and none of the stylists washed their hair more than once a week. Most didn't wash it at all. When I started working there I washed my hair every four days or so, but now I haven't washed it in maybe nine months, and six months before that. It doesn't smell, it's not too greasy (maybe because I'm vegan--seems to me that in general, when people eat a lot of animal fats, their skin and hair are greasier and smellier), and it looks great (so some people tell me). I think shampoo is basically a scam, unless you have dandruff or a really atypically greasy scalp.

What do you use to keep your hair nice? I'm interested in hearing. Note that I am on a powerlifting regiment with the intent of building both mass and strength, a vegan diet is not practical for my lifestyle. Also, my hair is about halfway down my back at this point.
Seriously, if I can keep my hair looking nice and clean without shampoo and stuff, that would help me out a lot.

It's 2 shampoos, I use an anti-dandruff one like once a month; then two conditioners. Which is 5 bottles total, but not 5 shampoos, I think 3 shampoos would be the uppermost limit that I could ever think of using. I rotate between them since I don't have time to use them all in my hair all at once (and it probably wouldn't be a good idea anyway).
I actually have pretty greasy scalp and skin.
I only recently started to use more than one shampoo and conditioner; for the first year of not cutting my hair I just used glycerine soap; which cleaned the hair, but it was always a tangled mess that I couldn't even run my fingers through without getting them caught after only an inch of running through my hair.
My hair pretty much stopped growing once it got to my shoulders. Then I started using this "straightening" set of shampoo and conditioner, and it worked, but after a year and a half I was noticing that my hair was still grodey, and while doing research into dreadlocks I found out that shampoos leave a lot of stuff in your hair; so I got some different stuff to alternate between what I normally use.
I don't take showers on days that I'm not going out or to school, and I take my showers after I work out at home at night. Which means that from thursday night to sunday night (friday, saturday, most of sunday) my hair gets a break.
... this is honestly a discussion that I never though I would have. For the longest time I've never used shampoo. I had short hair and used soap. Now I've done a complete aboutface, such is life.
and Tshern, I have shaved my head in the past. Like, on multiple occasions and for extended periods of time. My current hair started when I shaved it one last time and then had it trimmed once (and it was pointless) in the last 3 years.
Most of the people that are in my circle of friends with close-cropped hair who tell me to cut mine have never actually shaved their heads. Apparently I'm messing with their narrow idea of what masculine is.
Which is fucking hilarious for me, since it means that my hair is not only longer than theirs ever will be, but it's also been shorter than their hair ever has been.

Yeah, I have ass-length hair and I also have psoriasis. So when I shampoo, it's generally with two; and I have one other to switch off for. Then I have two conditioners and another two that switch off on a monthly basis...
Anyhow, yeah, I don't think diet has a big impact, I eat a 90% vegan diet, but it doesn't change my hair's oiliness more than my activities level. More sweat, more bacteria... But better spread of oils and eventually, better hair and less pimples on one's ass.

I don't use any hair products at all, just thorough rinsing when I shower. I've heard that a high-protein diet will result in glossier and stronger hair... Whatever you're eating for the lifting probably qualifies. FWIW I'm pretty meticulous about eating a lot of protein and my hair fulfills my strength and gloss requirements.Count_Arioch_the_28th wrote:What do you use to keep your hair nice?
Maybe try going without washing for a week and see how it is? I know some people also just condition, no shampoo, though I'm sure the results of that will vary a lot depending on the conditioner.
Hahaha, the whole POINT of that haircut was that it had no name! At least I never shaved a dollar sign into my chest-hair, like some people. I don't believe any pictures survive.FrankTrollman wrote: Bohawk.

I'm pretty sure that the way a person's hair behaves has a strong genetic component. How much you need to wash it and what with to get the result you want will vary a lot from person to person.

Yes, you don't want to have your hair look like Daniel Day-Lewis' did when he was in "Gangs of New York", the fucker didn't wash his hair once for like... I have no idea, until shooting ended pretty much.
Apparently he gets right into character and doesn't want to break immersion.
Near the end of the movie it looks like he's got a black glossy tar splotch on his head. Which ishows his dedication to be filthy no mater what, but his character is also shown to at least sit in a bathtub on a semi-regular basis (a tub in a brotherl, with naked girls in there as well), unlike everyone else in New York.

Yeah, I've got long, curly hair. I finally bought a whole slew of shampoos/conditioners and made a spreadsheet of what worked and what didn't. Then I found the common ingredients and just look for those when I buy something.JE wrote:Now I've got 2 different shampoos, 2 conditioners, 1 anti-dandruff shampoo and some leave-in conditoner. I hate it when a company gets a new bottle because it's usually attended by a change in formula, which is why I was inspired to figure out what worked and what didn't.
I only need one of each, though.

I've gone two days without washing my hair and it reeks horribly when I do it to the point that my own smells make myself sick to my stomach. So that's not going to happen. I do skip one day a week showering though.
My hair is somewhere between the border of wavy and curly, my hair itself is very fine, but very strong, I have to break apart knots with my fingers before combing because my hair will snap off the teeth on my brush.
I used to use Redken, but now my supply is running out, and I decided to move to a less expensive brand until I start getting the cash flowing again. I typically gravitate towards Pantene and Tresseme.
I shampoo my hair and wash my beard with soap, and condition both hair and beard. I comb both to keep them manageable. Sometimes I use a leave-in conditioner in my beard but almost never in my hair.
Also, I take a good multivitamin, that helps a lot. I forget which vitamin specifically helps hair grow, but there's one that will help.
The only thing I've heard that helps psoriasis is this resort somewhere. Supposedly, they have pools full of fish that nibble on the skin and for whatever reason, it helps. I don't remember where or what it was called. However, I can imagine that's highly impractical.

Sweat doesn't stink. Indeed, human sweat smells so good that you can literally bottle it and sell it because it genuinely turns people on to smell it. What stinks is the bacteria that live and die in your pores. Bacteria which are washed out when you sweat to be exposed to the world. In short, what stinks to high hell is not sweating. You just don't know that you stink until the next time your pores pen up a bit.
The thing that determines whether you stink or not is merely the ratio of your exertion level to your fat intake. More fat intake causes more production with sebaceous glands, which is actually fine as long as you are also sweating to clear them. More exertion clears your sebaceous glands. Increasing exertion will make you smell worse for a short period of time, but if you maintain it you'll smell much better.
