Canabalizing RPG Systems

Post by ckafrica »

While there are thousands of systems out there, the fact that most of them have fallen to they wayside. But what are the worthwhile parts of all these systems? I'd like to gather system concepts that attracted us to a certain game so that we can have a bit of a database of the best (or at least interesting) concepts and mechanics we've seen in games.

Conspiracy X (Eden Studios)
Zener card psychic powers: When you wanted to activate a psychic power you would have to successfully guess which of 5 Zener cards your DM was holding up. Stronger psychics were given more chances to guess the card.

It's been a long time since I played it so I forget the exact mechanics but I remember thinking that it was a pretty fun idea if frustrating at times (especially for cursed people like me who can never guess right).
The internet gave a voice to the world thus gave definitive proof that the world is mostly full of idiots.

I like the d20 systems unified die roll.

Skill check? d20
Attack roll? d20
Saving throw? d20

Any unified dice system is a good resolution mechanic, but it doesn't have to be a d20. I think that 1 die is better than more dice, and that a 20 is better than a 6. However, this can produce wildly different results.

Marvel Universe RPG

Largely functional diceless system (the only diceless system I've ever seen that wasn't complete fail). Diceless lets you affect the story to a degree that is within a set range of possibilities. If you want to pick a lock and you -can- pick it, and you are willing to expend the resources, then you just pick it. If you can't do then you can't do it. You aren't subject to the extremes of probability that you end up with in systems with dice.

It also deals with a range of characters from average or below average humans to super-heroic / quasi-epic without breaking down at any point.
Sighs and leers and crocodile tears.
