I'm reading girl genius, and for the last few months it's been apparent. Agatha is going to marry not only Gilgamesh Wulfenbach, but also Tarvek Sturmvoraus.
It resolves nearly every succession issue, and she can do it b/c she's the mother-fucking Heterodyne; people who seriously lead armies of monsters into battle, are aroused when a hot princess sends armies of combat robots to assassinate them, etc. etc.
Comparing Gilgamesh and Tarvek:
They've also got equal levels of capability, and think almost exactly the same way. Both about each other (they hate each other as rivals, but haven't actually challenged each other at all), and about Agatha (and they're willing to set aside their own rivalry in order to save either each other, or Agatha). So, there's no "choice" that's to be made between the two; except for backstory, or appearance. Seriously, that's the only real difference between the two; one is the heir of the storm king; the other is the heir of the Wulfenbach empire. Agatha of course, is heir to the Heterodyne legacy (and all of it's good, and bad).
For their similarities... they're supposed to be almost the same.
They're both major sparks of the highest order, one built a completely independent intelligent robot; the other built a city defense system that directs lighting bolts at enemies.
Neither likes to make actual weapons (Agatha actually does though; Gilgamesh ends up building his first weapon, mostly to defend Agatha's 'city' from an army of walking cannon-ships; he builds it specifically b/c he knows that the town will get attacked, otherwise, he's actually confused when Agatha asks him where his death rays, or other weapons are when she first meets him, and they get attacked).
They're both intrigue-type plot protagonist-level savvy. They plan ahead, and can assess people, or realize potential problems.
Whenever Agatha is in danger, they pull out the stops and attack the threat; be it that they're naked, deathly ill with some super-plague, and their opponent is a three-ton bronze tiger-clank; or that they've been shot, and their opponent is a madman driving a machine-gun carrying walker-type clank. So, they're both about the same when it comes to bravery, and endurance.
Finally, to cap it off, both of them are mentally and physically connected via some tubes in order to save Tarvek's life (he has some illness, Agatha and Gil 'killed' him, then hooked Gil and Tarvek together so that the illness doesn't get worse). So, they're literally in sync with each other, and basically have whole conversations with Agatha where each one says a different part of the conversation to her.
Seriously, it's laying down a foundation for that being a possibility. Right now, they are being played off as having not only no differences, but now they are one personality that's the result of both of their personalities being synchronized. Honestly, it's a more interesting story than most, since it's one that I haven't seen before, but the funny thing is that I think that I know where this is going.

I don't see why Tarvek was included. Gilgamesh was an interesting and generally excellent character on his own.

Well, there's going to be some crap going on.
Remember the opera intermission? I'm pretty sure the time-viewing device is tied in with the prophecy.
Also, Gil's motivations are clear. Tarvek...It's still unknown exactly which side he's playing; he does like Agatha, though. On the other hand, check this out. First comic page.

So I really don't know if he's with Agatha or The Other. Or what the Other is. I do
That said, I have worked out some stuff. If anyone wants to lay bets on if I'm right or not, I'll be happy to oblige.

think Tarvek's a clone of his father.
I'll break this into points/facts...
-Klaus told Othar he hadn't seen his wife in years.
-Klaus already had Gil when he came back to Europe.
-Klaus thinks the most likely reason a Skifander warrior would be in Europe would be to kill Gil.
It's a little sketchy, but from that and some other bits, I'm figuring that Klaus' wife is back in Skifander (duh). Also, I think Gil's mother is nobility/royalty, and this would be problematic for the politics/succession. Which would 1) Give a plausible reason for sending a warrior across Heaven and Earth 2) possibly mean Gil and Zeetha are related to some degree or another.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.
