2E defied all logic.
Just look at the saving throw system.

2E just copied most of 1E with a few changes and additions. I mean the xp tables are nearly carbon copies of the 1E ones!

I thought that was the point of the 2nd edition - to tidy up all the odd rules and amendments that had accumulated through the lifespan of AD&D, not to tear it down to basics and start again.Bill Bisco: Isometric Imp wrote:2E just copied most of 1E with a few changes and additions. I didn't think it was ever meant to be revolutionary.

Oh indeed. The needing to hit high on a D20 and having negative AC wasn't started in 2E or even 1E, it was started in OD&D.

No, the purpose of 2nd edition was first to purge the memory of Gygax from AD&D; with fire if necessary. The second purpose was to slip AD&D under the radar of the Wacko Right, by removing the demonic and otherwise evil references (no asssassins and no half orcs, for example, were a result of this missive). Finally the third purpose of 2nd edition was to trim the optional and semi-optional rule sets which was causing complications in the RPGA space (back when the notion of using the RPGA as a form of test bed for game design was falling out of favor and the idea of using it as a convention coordinator was gaining favor).Red_Rob wrote:I thought that was the point of the 2nd edition - to tidy up all the odd rules and amendments that had accumulated through the lifespan of AD&D, not to tear it down to basics and start again.
All thanks to LW the Wicked Bitch of the West.tzor wrote:No, the purpose of 2nd edition was first to purge the memory of Gygax from AD&D; with fire if necessary.Red_Rob wrote:I thought that was the point of the 2nd edition - to tidy up all the odd rules and amendments that had accumulated through the lifespan of AD&D, not to tear it down to basics and start again.
Rules Cyclopedia, was actually to bring together D&D into one book, which oddly came out AFTER 2nd edition.
2nd was a tidy up in the revised edition, but mostly to purge the name E. Gary Gygax from the books covers and pages.
Play the game, not the rules.
good read (Note to self Maxus sucks a barrel of cocks.)

As you stated Rules Cyclopedia was a "D&D" work, not an AD&D work. Back in the early 90's there was a faint nostalgia for the original work, but it was still a niche market within what was obviously a nich market in and of itself.shadzar wrote:Rules Cyclopedia, was actually to bring together D&D into one book, which oddly came out AFTER 2nd edition.
