A Song of Ice and Fire RPG rules: Combat

Post by ChaoticPumpkin »

Is there any ASIFRPG combat savants around here? I really can't figure some things out:

What is reach good for? Since it is no problem for a man with a dagger to close the distance and strike, you wielding the longsword will need to keep moving backwards or strike at a -1D penalty. (I haven't had any opportunity to test-play, so I assume I'm ignoring something completely)

In combination with the Free Attack rule, I'd assume that you cannot simply run out of combat when your opponent has reach. But is that all?

And how does counter-attack work? Do you get to attack at every single opponent that attacks you that round? Does interrupting your enemy's action cancel his chosen/declared action? And in if yes, does he lose his turn?

I haven't looked at the book in ages. I'll flip through it tonight and see if I can answer your questions.

There is a previous discussion of the game here. From what I gathered, having a weapon with reach let you very slowly beat the crap out of people who had heavier armor than you did. The specific example was of a guy with a boar spear repeatedly jabbing a guy in heavy armor to death with a death of a thousand cuts. That seems completely ridiculous to me, but I could see how a series of individually sensible sounding mechanics could end up like that.
