The Secret of Weepstone (OD&D Style First Person Module)

Post by deaddmwalking »

A few weeks ago an article discussing Secret of Weepstone Keep showed up in my news feed. There's a free demo on Steam, and it seemed like something that was right up my alley.

I had a lot of fun playing the rather short demo. It definitely feels like an old-style module come-to-life. It's like playing Eye of the Beholder in hand-drawn black & white art, which is surprisingly effective.

The demo involved picking 'volunteers' to explore the keep - all 0th level characters. The demo combines some teaching about game play elements and some minor exploration. Some areas of the screen are highlighted and have an interaction menu.

If you have an hour to kill, you should try it.

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

It's actually more like someone turned a classic D&D module into a first-person adventure. Every time you click over to the map you see the module cover. Every time you fight you see the dice rolling. So it's almost like a Dungeon Master is running it for you, but the computer is the GM.

So it's somewhere between a print module run table top and an old Might and Magic game.
