Re: Paradox of Souls
In good old Jewish Mysticism, one can not create souls. One can create golems that have bodies and minds and Intelligence, but no souls. One can create animals that are tasty, but no souls. We attempt to imitate God's artistry, but souls is where you draw the line. The only way to make souls is the ...

Well, I like the thread, but... uh... well... I was out celebrating Rosh Hashanah.[br][br]To answer your question Shirak (Long answer first, then short answer):[br]Sin in mainstream Judaism just isn't a big deal. The word "Chayt" for sin is the same term they use in archery when you miss t...

Re: Jewish Mysticism and Weekly Spell Quotas
Quite right Manxome. I was unsure exactly what to do with the problem of wars being staged on shabbat, clearly the opposite of the intention. It's perfectly consistent with the way magic works to say that spells simply don't work on the Sabbath, since the angels are too busy praising God to do anyth...

Jewish Mysticism and Weekly Spell Quotas
For some time now, off and on, I have been working on an RPG setting based on Jewish Mysticism, pre- and post-Kaballah. I really could go on forever talking about magic in Jewish Mysticism, and I will if anyone's interested. I don't actually believe in the stuff... I just believe it makes for a grea...

Re: Perilous System
Hi Manxome,[br][br]Finally had time to read the new rules.[br]First, you have a typo in the second paragraph of the entire document... it says "complete" where I think, for humility's sake, you meant "incomplete"...hehe[br]I like the reworking of the techniques, seems fine to me....

Re: Healers in fiction
D'oh, hit reply while still in the middle of editing...[br][br]There are really two distinct kinds of healing though - physical wounds, and diseases both mental and physical. (I'll ignore raising the dead entirely, that is also everywhere but almost always a power reserved for the messiah and his ar...

Re: Healers in fiction
Thousands of years of mysticism in various religions! (I'm only really versed in the mysticism of judaic religions, so that's what I'm referring to.) Healers are more ubiquitous in this context than almost anything else, and believe me, there's tons of magic to be found therein!

Re: Perilous System
Having expertise add +2 techniques is better... I'd have to think about whether I'd take it. It's hard to predict for higher level characters, who have significantly more options.[br]Another way to make it competitive is to make it more like masterful: the extra technique can be added to maneuvers o...

Re: Perilous System
I've been vacationing off and on, so I don't get to the computer often...[br][br]1)Talents: At this point, I don't think that fighting expertise, etc. would ever hold a candle to masterful technique. I can think of a ton of reasons if you're not convinced. Same goes for shifting style... it seems us...

Re: Perilous System
First, confirmations/question/comment:[br]1) I assume that an "attack" is just a physical attack... this is obvious, but I wanted to make double sure. If you use baiting on a mage, he'll just keep casting and won't care.[br]1.5) Judging from what you said earlier in the thread, fighter cal...

Re: Perilous System
Hmm... I really did have two identical character creation segments (the first during the Talents section). Oh well.[br] However, there are a lot more techniques in the game than one character can plausibly have access to... [br]In that case, I do have one suggestion. I would allow people to make man...

Re: Perilous System
Hi Manxome,[br][br]Just thought I'd post to give you encouragement! The system is, as rapanui said, very well constructed, and I would like to see it continue! I didn't want you to think rapanui was the only one who was enjoying your work.[br][br]Might as well give you some silly comments while I'm ...

Re: What is it about "Low Magic?"
Not everyone prefers "low-magic", but as someone who does, here's my definition and my reasoning.[br][br]In no-magic games, battles play out according to reasonable real world tactics, tactics which depend very much on positioning, terrain, and teamwork. We enjoy these kinds of tactics. We...

Re: Magic Swords
Being one of the few so far to advocate static weapons, I feel duty bound to try to lay out my objection more clearly.[br]Yes, upgrading from a +6 frostie to a +7 frostie is lame. Whether you have +X frosties or minor/medium/major frosties or whatever method of describing the power of the frostie, i...

Re: Magic Swords
I vote for weapons with static abilities, or at least with a static cap on their abilities (i.e. this weapon is a +X shocking weapon so it counts as +min(X, yourlevel) in shocking). Bookkeeping is seriously a minimal issue, and there aren't any real numerical reasons to choose one or the other, or e...

You might want to pay the last peasant in line a little bit extra. After all, physics kicks in right at the end of his turn, so as he launches that 33lb object at 340 mph, his approximately 165lb body will be rocketed the other way at about 68mph (right into the peasant behind him). Throwing it to t...

Hi all. I lurk around this board often, primarily because I'm lazy and I like to procrastinate. (and you guys are fairly intelligent and fun to listen to. The internet is full of people who are precisely NOT like that. Kudos to you!) (Oh, and double chewy kudos to Frank and K, for obvious reasons.) ...
