The problem isn't the tiering of progression, the problem is the imbalance of progression. There's no reason that 'epic tier' needs to be, conceptually or mechanically, "Space Time Is My Bitch". At some point your character becomes too godlike to be interesting. That's the whole reasons li...

Yes, and in the context of arguing, any effect derived from, related to, or invoking a dumbass tautology would be properly described as a dumbass tautology. If you define magic as "anything supernatural" and supernatural as "magical" then you're just arguing yourself into semanti...

He says in the thread about shit other than just book sales. In a thread that basically amounts to '3.5 wins over 4th in Google Fights'. Nevermind that book sales are one piece of a ginormous base of evidence that tells us 4e was a failure. What evidence? See, all the 3.5tupids keep saying this but...

It's pretty hilarious watching the 3.5tupids try and prove that 4th edition is an unpopular failure using nothing but book sales. It's like they don't even realize that DDI has made owning many of the books completely redundant.

Dissociated Mechanics are a Good Thing

List of dissociated mechanics in Dungeons and Dragons: Character generation. Character advancement. Initiative. Rolling dice to attack. Saving Throws. Armor Class. Hit Points. Martial Daily Powers. Martial Encounter Powers. Divine Daily Powers. Divine Encounter Powers. Daily and Encounter Powers of ...

Two, it's a roleplaying game. Well, no, it isn't, and that's rather the problem. 4e is a tactical combat minigame , and not a roleplaying game at fucking all. You can't roleplay around dissociated mechanics, because the role you are attempting to play, by design, has incomplete information about ho...

Right. They work on a charge mechanic because it's a fucking game and not a realistic depiction of small scale melee combat.

Yeah, I noticed that too. What worries me is GNS dog whistle about sacrificing "simulation" for "gameplay." We've heard that before from Heinsoo and Mearls . Sounds like Monte drank the koolaid. Because God forbid they focus on making a game that's fun to play before considering...

Despite constantly leveling stupid criticisms against the game I don't like, I can't be bother to acknowledge criticisms of one I do. It doesn't work that way. That is one way that you can choose to justify it in some of the situations in which it can be applied. I refuse to believe however that yo...

Then they would have changed the attack to +2 vs AC or something, not Will. About dissociation in general, a game has a certain dissociation "budget" before players get tired of trying to meet the game halfway. The more often you have to do mental gymnastics to rationalize the rules, the ...

Right, but there's nothing wrong with a dissociated mechanic, as much as blowhards like The Alexandrian protest otherwise. Fantasy RPGs are built on heaps of them (HP, spells per day, ...rolling dice) The change came not because it was dissociated but because forced movement with no defense or possi...

My contention is that small amounts of forced movement are of very minor utility due to how infrequently the situations where they can meaningful come up in actual play. Right, and I don't think that's the case because while 'knock them into the abyss' is not a common scenario, even one square can ...

Push/Pull/Slide 1 is usually so minor as to be nearly meaningless when a character can use 1/3 of their action to "shift 1" and undo it. Note that I said "nearly meaningless", there are situations where difficult terrain or hazardous features on the map or even just-right initia...

I would say this though: 5e probably needs rules for doors specifically just to avoid giving the wrong impression. 4e took a lot of flak for not providing rules for doors. 4e does have door rules, but it's the kind of game that wouldn't and people just assumed. If there's no rule for opening a door...

Depends on if the door is Push or Pull :D

In all seriousness, Cook clearly has no idea how to lay out rules in the most clear and concise manner possible. Luckily I think he's just there as an idea guy. Probably the idea guy who Mearls and co listen to, and then do exactly the opposite of.

d100 is not a good idea at all. I think for non-combat things (ie, Skills, Stunts, non-combat spells) a simple D20+ability mod would be fine, with the ability in use being agreed upon by the player and DM. So that you could Intimidate with STR by flexing your muscles, or some such. For combat abilit...

They've more or less said they're working on 5E now. Wait, did they straight up say "they're a 5e in the works" or is this just based off the Mearls columns? "in the works" is really broad. Obviously they're doing preliminary research for the next edition, but development could ...

Maybe you believe they apply to 3e, too, but saying so is *not* a defense of 4e. If they apply to 3e too, then there's no reason to stay with 3e given the large number of actual improvements made with 4e, such as the elmination of caster godhood, the consolodation of skills, the far-closer-to-accur...

Skills don't even suck in 4E. There are some annoying ommissions, but at least you don't have to waste points on something dumb like Use Rope. It's a step up if not a perfect solution. Combats take longer largely because there aren't as many ways for primary casters to completely break the game or t...
