WoW is a very hard game on memory. My old AMD used to die from memery errors when playing WoW during summer. Its why I've paid much more attention to heat management in subsequent systems.

League of Legends actually does the free to play model pretty well. Anything you can buy with money can be gotten with ingame points in a timely fashion. Anything you can't is vanity only. Of course its a DotA clone rather than an MMO.

Quick computer question.

I have picked up Spore again and am trying it. (Possibly I can avoid pissing off the warlike empire next to me in Space Mode within 15 seconds and not have my spice production cut off completely because they conquer every planet right after terraforming and keep attacking my homeworld and won't stop)

Anyway, I have an Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 graphic card. I need to reinstall the driver and I can't find one that will work for Windows 7. Telling it to reinstall through device manager just gives me a message that it's already up to date. Any advice?

here's an easy list of nvidia gpus compatible with Win7

Unfortunatley, fx 5200 doesn't seem to be on there.

does anyone know anything about the EEE tablets in production? EP101TC and EP121TC?

also, i have two usb wifi receivers, and they keep overheating in ludicrously short periods of time, sometimes within 15-30 minutes... anyone have some idea of what's up?

I managed to find an old copy of Diablo while cleaning my apartment the other day. I'm trying to play it, and I'm getting some graphical errors (lots of brightly colored pixels scattered all over the screen. I can see what I'm doing, but it's annoying.)

Anyone have any advice? I run Windows 7, and I just upgraded to directX 9.

The quality control on those things in general is complete shit. I also have a terrible one that I'm forced to use.

I've seen similar problems with Starcraft on recent machines. I use an application called ChaosLauncher which fixes the issue; it might work for you on Diablo.

They're both similar-era Blizzard games.

Chaoslauncher didn't work, but for some reason opening the resolution window makes it go away. Odd.

Quality control on wifi dongles does tend to be shit. I bought one for my wife's computer a few years back as a standby until she got a computer with a wireless card. It had to be 10' away from the router's antenna to get any reception.

Thread Necromancy!

My sister's laptop is infected with this pop-up spammer called Bankerfox. It spams pop-ups saying she's infected and she needs to BUY BUY BUY SYSTEM PROTECTION

And checking around online has found out it can be removed by some processes.

Problem with those: Bankerfox shuts down anything that could be potentially used to screw it up. You can google up those websites, which involve deleting files, ending the processes, and editing the registry, but it will shut down other programs after a while.

Does anyone know any decent free malware remover that can be used to kick this thing in the ass, or should she wait until Monday and take it to the IT service at her college, which apparently is staffed by people who are qualified to start a religion about computer repair?

What anti-spyware programs have you tried?

...Actually, Agrinja recommended Spybot Search and Destroy.

It worked, after a couple of tries.

Thankfully. Shit was annoying--it would randomly close out things like the Task Manager and most other things that could do something to get rid of it.

I had something similar to that back in the day. I nuked the hard drive and reinstalled. Lost a lot of pictures that I can never get back that day. These days I keep an external drive for file backup.

I didn't want to start a new thread, so I picked an old computer one...

This is a friendly reminder to clean out your computer and make sure there's no dust build-up around your fan.

It sounds like there's a story there. Possibly involving a dusty fan and copious amounts of fire?

I remember one computer back when i was working in a shop . .
In the MechBay . . We opened it up, old REALLY old computer . .
Like, 10 or 15 Years or something like that. Office-Computer/Server.
We were REALLY impressed, when we found a thick and stiff mat of what we thought was sound dampening material . . So we implored at the owner.
"Nope, that one does not have any kind of sound dampening, why?"
So we took out our exacto knives, and cut it away . . It was Dirt. Lint. Dust. Hairs. EVERYTHING AIRBORNE THAT CAN BE SUCKED INTO THE COMPUTER!
And it kept its general form, which had holes/dents/indentures from the Hardware-Components underneath . . Seriously . . Kinda like foam filling . .
You could make out where the PCI-Cards would have been, where the CPU/Cooler was, where the Cables that were not completely sucked into the Block were . . Even the screws from the Drive Bays . . It was that stiff . .
Welcome, to IronHell.

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

@Stahlseele - Holy Pocket Lint, Batman!

@Echo - Not quite. I've been converting movie files on my computer and it really works out my CPU. Last week I was in the other room when I heard the in-board siren going of in my computer and I turned it off in a panic. I'm not one of those people who takes apart her computer and regularly cleans it out, but I do stick one of those air cans in every now and again and move things around, I guess.

I took it apart this time and there wasn't a lot of dust inside, but it was caked all over the CPU fan. So I took it apart and cleaned it out with a toothbrush. No fire ensued, no computer melted down, but I figured it was a good opportunity to remind people about it so - just in case.

But a case with filters on the air intakes. My box is four years old and near pristine. A good case will last for ages, just rip out the outdated guts and throw new ones in when you feel the need.
